Working, I think your reasons make perfect sense.

I saw my GP today, the first one ever that hasn't treated me as a child. He didn't bat an eyelid when I told him I had no clue about lmp, just due date. He gave me two hospitals to choose from and when I asked for a recommendation he replied that he had worked at both and neither were outstanding.

So my plan of action is going to piss off everyone. I'll have my scans etc with whichever then transfer to Barnet for the Edgeware birthing centre which if unable to take me on the day will mean I revert to plan b which will be a homebirth which is a different hospital altogether. Thank god we keep our own notes.

Hi all, Can I join...?

Kayzr · 19/10/2011 12:35

Morning congratulations and welcome to the thread. My first pregnancy was a lot like that. Except here you have to see the GP who says "is it good or bad news?" then congratulations. Then they work out due date with a little wheel thing. That's all mine have ever done. Then the MW would ring to sort out an appointment.

Now we have to make our own appointments. But it sounds ok to me. I actualy wish I could skip the GP appointment as it's pointless.

Thanks Kayzr, I guess because it's the most exciting thing in my life at the moment I think everyone else should be buzzing around me as well! Blush

What sort of timescale would be 'normal' for the first midwife appt? Are there particular tests/scans that need to be done at a certain number of weeks etc?

Sorry for being so clueless - I'm clearly going to be the one that's hard work!

thedogwalker · 19/10/2011 12:43

Welcome Morning, i think as you have had an appointment and already organsied your next one there is no need to phone back again, imo. I had to wait for the midwives to ring me so that is not uncommon, just avoid that recepptionist in future if you can Smile. Working, I think you reasons for the scan are perfectly normal, let us know the happy news when you get back from the scan x
Well I am swapping midwife units as the one I was booked in at won't do home visits now or after baby born so in the middle of swapping GP surgery so that I can qualify for new midwifery team, wish me luck Grin

Kayzr · 19/10/2011 12:50

Morning here you have midwife appointment at 8-10 weeks. Then a scan at about 12 weeks. Then midwife at 16 weeks, scan at 20 weeks then midwife every 4 weeks until about 32 weeks then every 2 weeks until birth. It's probably slightly different around the country though.

Working I think they are really good reasons for an early scan. I hope it all goes well and you can have a great holiday.

TDW hope you get everything changed ok.

StarlightMcKenzie · 19/10/2011 13:15

Morning It's all a bit boring in the beginning. Sorry. No-one is that interested until you get to around 12 weeks or so, and even then you 'can' be treated as if on a bit of a conveyor belt.

Booking in is often little more than an admin exercise (often conducted by agency staff) and whilst you are probably desperate to find out about and get your birth plan in place, no-one will be particularly interested in discussing it with you until at least 34 weeks, and possibly not even then.

Sorry. It sounds a bit miserable but it's the NHS and it is falling apart. I would advise that you do lots of your own reading and don't rely too much on the NHS route to information. I'm not saying NHS information is wrong, btw, just scarce. Also find out locally what is available in terms of care options and birthing options from other mums/MN.

I expect the more experienced of us will be sharing our birth plan info closer to the time and you should get lots of ideas about what options there are in that respect.

OP posts:
StarlightMcKenzie · 19/10/2011 13:17

I'm still struggling with my situation. The two closest maternity units have closed down and there are not MLU places (my preferred option) anywhere near. The closest is attached to a hospital that is VERY far away (although the actual unit is not). I can't see how I can get what I feel is a perfectly reasonable request without causing mayhem.

Basically, I want a homebirth with the option of transfering into a stand alone MLU. But the homebirth midwives are from a different hospital to the MLU. And given the MLU are strict with no. they will accept for booking in, I have to get in early and state that I want to be there, which will mean 'officially' being under a different hospital (just in case). If I subsequently envoke my right to a homebirth, it can only be able to be done on the day I am in labour in order to ensure I don't lose my place at the MLU, which would mean on the day, completely switching midwife teams AND hospitals which I know I am entitled to do, but is very messy and doesn't feel particularly fair on the midwives who would not be expecting me, nor be up to speed on my history.

Good to have you join us Morning! (We are due on the same day)!! Its lovely to hear how excited you are! I wouldnt worry about seeing anyone else until you have had your next scan, after that they will probably book you in for your 12week scan anyway. Nobody ever seems that interested until we get past the 8-9week stage, then all of a sudden they start to sound a bit more keen....

Kayzr glad to hear your tummy has settled a little!

TDW thanks for that! My mum has not a leg to stand on with the age argument, as she had me when she was 42!! Shes just a worrier by nature, and finds it hard to say the right thing at the best of times!! Hope your not to tired today (4am is just too early)!

Starlight Its a bit sad when your doctor cant even vouch for the hospitals... your plan sound very sensible.... although with me the best of plans always goes out the window when the babies actually on the way! (Im not even going to consider a birthing plan this time)!

Fubble · 19/10/2011 13:31

Hello all - been hovering around reading since the thread started - POAS end of Sept and got a BFP but after a missed mc in June, apprehensive would be an understatement. Am 7 weeks today - EDD 06/06. Still trying not to get too excited, but as nausea has kicked in this last couple of days it's hard not to think about it - ALL THE TIME [hgrin]
Had what I thought was a tummy bug over the weekend, but now wondering if it was just another part of this pregnancy.
All being well, this will be my second - have a dd who's about to turn 2 (where has that time gone!?!)
At the minute, my main worry is if I'm doing too much lifting of my dd - sometimes it's the only way to get the ridiculously stubborn headstrong child to do things [hwink]

looking forward to getting to know everyone over the next while. Will add my details to the (getting long) list.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Right, so I'll play it cool for a few weeks more whilst researching the arse out of everything (yay, I get to write lists!) and hovering on here keeping an eye out for things I need to be aware of...

Starlight, I had no idea there were so many choices involved in giving birth! Hopefully my Doc/MW will say our local hospital is simply superb and make the choice easier! Good luck making your decision...

Fubble I'm constantly nauseous too, nibbling ginger biscuits seems to take the edge off but the only time I really don't feel sick is when I'm stuffing my face with carb-rich food. Think I may well balloon over the next few months Grin. I'm lucky in having 2 DSCs (9&12) who are really want to help and get involved. Though DSS (12) is a bit grossed out following his realisation that his Dad and I must have actually had sex...

I am doing the 4 am thing t

scater · 19/10/2011 14:00

Hello All

I am waiting until next week for my first GP appointment because from my experience with friends the first trimenster seems to last so long, I am trying to spread things out a bit.

I am having a really stressful time at work when all I really want to think about is being pregnant. I fell off the wagon and had a cigarette, hate myselfAngry been doing so well since I tested and as a confirmed 15-20 a day smoker felt very proud.

So, a crappy day. Will be better tomorrow, as long as I dont feel too sick of course!

Kayzr · 19/10/2011 14:06

Scater Sorry for a rubbish day. I was a 15-20 a day smoker too. My god its bloody hard. First thing in the morning I think I could actually kill someone to get a cigarette. I resorted to standing near my friend this morning when she had one just to sniff it. I hope tomorrow is much better.

Welcome to Fubble and many congratulations.

I am really really fed up of this bloody bug now. I would really like it to bugger off.

5 weeks today, 35 to go. I wish it would hurry up, still 3 weeks until my booking in appointment.

Florin · 19/10/2011 14:08

Sorry for the half message bloody iPhone!
Here is my full message
Welcome to the newbies!
I am doing the 4 am waking thing, I think it is because I wake up needing to pee and then as I am awake I start thinking about being pregnant etc so don't fall back to sleep, it is driving me mad.
Had some very mild cramps this morning. They made me rather nervous as our best friends lost their baby on Monday. However from what I have been reading they are very normal. Just make me worry.
I have my docs appointment next Tuesday when I will be 6 weeks. I keep just aiming for every little milestone it's the only way to keep me sane.
Anyone else extremely hungry all the time? I used to do a carb free diet to keep my weight down which I obviously gave up when I got my bfp but even with carbs I am forever hungry and if I get to hungry I feel horribly sick.

greengoose · 19/10/2011 14:23

Just wanted to say really proud of Scater and Kayzr for giving up smoking now your pregnant! I think its an amazing thing to do for your baby. My mum smoked throughout being pregnant with me and I was born very premature with breathing difficulties that even then in the 70s they put down to her smoking so much....
I do understand how hard it is, having watched my mum fight and finally in her 60s win the battle to give it up (after watching it kill my Dad at 65), but I think its great you are doing it! You shouldnt feel bad Scater for the odd slip, you are doing really really well at something that is very difficult!

MammaInTheMaking · 19/10/2011 14:31

Florin i'm exactly the same as you. If i let myself get too hungry i suddenly feel overwhelmingly sick. Last night it was my turn to cook. By the time it got to boiling the broccoli for 5 mins i felt so horrendous i had to ask DP to come and finish it off. I was just pacing round the kitchen shaking my hands saying i couldn't do any more without hurling all over our food!

Anyway, as soon as I had some grub in my i felt fine again! At work it's quite difficult. I have a pack of ginger biscuits with me, some Tuc biccies and fruit. My colleagues have said i have quite a feast on my desk. If only they knew!

scater · 19/10/2011 14:38

Thanks for support all. Hopefully I am back on track again. It is very shaming, smoking and being pregnant and I think it will get much easier as more people know as I will never be able to make an excuse.

I think like for lots of people, at this stage when most around you dont know everything is hard because being pregnant is all you can think about!

For me, I want the next few weeks to pass(hopefully without anything going wrong) so scan will be done etc. On the other hand, in those few weeks I will have implimented some massive, and not very nice changes at work, so I want the weeks to pass slowly!

Bloody life, never goes as planned. Keep counting my blessings though. Just think, this time next year we will be knackered with a small being constantly attached to our boobs!

StarlightMcKenzie · 19/10/2011 14:53

Eating a bowl of Alpen seems to help although I should have gone for the sugar free as it is a bit sickly.

Also finding that eating a hard boiled egg on it's own for breakfast helps.

OP posts:
millyv · 19/10/2011 15:51

Afternoon ladies - gosh it's been a busy day on here!

Working, I think you are best to have the scan, you have very good reasons and it will put your mind at ease!

Welcome to all the new ladies, exciting times isn't it -a little anti climax though isnt it, you finally get your bfp and then you have to stay hush hush about it! I always used to think the 2ww was a nightmare when trying to concieve but now we have a 6 week wait for our scans, I hope time flies by, I am not the most patient!

Starlight sounds like a bit of a nightmare you have on your hands, I have to say I am quite lucky as we only live 2 miles from the hospital and my SIL had all of her cildren there, along with numerous friends and have all said good things so I am hopeful?

Sctaer Firstly congratulations on giving up, I was a smoker but when I found out I was pregnant I was very lucky as it was like a switch just went off in my head, if someone walks past me with one it turns my stomach, I can even tell if someone has been smoking. However I have battled for years to get to this point, there is no point in getting stressed over it, think how amazingly you have done from going from 15-20 a day to 1! You should be proud of yourself!

Florin I had cramps last week, they were like really mild period pains but quite uncmofortable and very nerve wracking - I think I was in the loo every 5 mins checking! I'm not extremely hungry but I am finding that instead f eating 3 main meals I 'm having smaller portions but more often, I haven't felt sick much but when I get hungry it's much worse for me.

I was very upset yesterday as I love M&S Percy pigs (my grandma always used to buy them for me whenever she saw me) but I had one in the car the other day and as soon as I bit into it I had to spit it out and I could smell them, I was most unimpressed! Also I had a white chcolate magnum last night, I had to pick the white chocolate off as made me feel sick but the ice cream was ok, think I'm having an aversion to sweet things - anyone else having this?

Off for a swim tonight, looking forward to doing some exercise although I'll probably be shttered by the time I get hoome! xx

StarlightMcKenzie · 19/10/2011 16:03

milly I'm a bit of a Contrary Mary and my problems are always worse because I question things. I could of course, just go with the local (aka 3 buses away) hospital and put up with it, but childbirth is a time when women are extremely vulnerable and I think planning for the type of care can increase your chances of having a better experience and outcome.

You can't control what your body does, but you CAN control for how that is interpreted and dealt with by chosing your provider carefully.

OP posts:
ReadySteadyDrink · 19/10/2011 17:45

I am totally having an aversion to sweet things. I am craving veggies and water - so unlike me!!! I usually have such a sweet tooth. I guess it's just the early stages of pregnancy and our bodies craving more of the right stuff to help the growing bean!!!
