Sorry going back to the midwife topic... A friend of mine had a horrible birth due to a nasty mw. My friend is naturally small person but eats allot. Needless to say she was small throughout her pregnancy. The mw who was at the birth spoke to her as though she was starving her child and she was a bad mother. After the birth they left DD next to her bed and left her alone. My friend had an epidural and wasn't able to pick her little one up while she was crying. She tried to call someone, no one came. Then once the crying got worse, the witch returned and growled at her telling her that she was annoying other patients.
Anyway, they were told after the nasty experience that by law if you don't like ur MW you can request they change with someone else and they have to change.
I'm a first timer so don't know if this is true?? Anyone know if its true or do you just pray you get someone lovely??

Talking about benefits. I'm also lucky.. I get 6 weeks at 100% , 12weeks at 50% then the remainder smp. However scared to tell work I'm pregnant as they do redundancies continuously. I know you can't make someone redundant for pregnancy but I have a suspicion they will think of some other reason as they don't like paying out. Having my 21 week scan tomor. Planning on telling them on wed next week. Qualifying week is 1st of Sept. So a few weeks out. Do you think I should try hold out till closer to the time??

Awomancalledhorse · 03/08/2011 08:25

Mrsxstitch, my feet are swollen too; I bought about 4 pairs of cheapy plimsols from Primark last month as they were the only comfortable thing I could find, and now they don't fit.

Ordering some new, wide fit, shoes from Hotter tonight (slip ons!), but only my running trainers fit me now!!

msbuggywinkle · 03/08/2011 09:35

I was in my last trimester over winter with DD2, I bought a pair of UG-style boots. Hideous, but soft enough to be comfortable on giant feet and warm!

In the hideous but comfortable actually, these yoga pants are the most comfortable pair of maternity trousers in the universe. I wore them so much at the end of my pregnancies with the DDs, and they would probably be really comfy over a c section scar too, the material is really soft and they come up very high.

I like being heavily pregnant in winter better than summer, DD1 was born in July and I spent the last 6 weeks flopping about moaning! I felt much happier being able to wear fewer layers over winter with DD2.

OiMissus · 03/08/2011 09:40

oh footwear - hadn't considered that! When I went on a hospital tour the other ladies were all heavily pregnant and EVERY one of them wore flip flops. I suppose I could bring my slippers into work. Hmm he he he!
MW's - "can we request another" - that might be difficult. With our "maternity wards in crisis" we'll be lucky to get one-on-one care, and if we don't like the one we get, will there be another available? Or, do you request another, get told no chance, and offend the witch and get even worse treatment? It's an even stronger argument for a homebirth where you can ascertain more control in your own home. In a hospital, and as a first-timer, we are at their mercy - no matter how confident we are in normal life, it's going to be difficult to command respect when we're scared/in pain/in unfamiliar surroundings.
I'm sure we'll all be fine, have lovely midwives, and have positive experiences. It's good that we are here and talking about it so that we can be prepared, and can prepare our partners, for what to expect. That's the key. Our OHs need to be able to defend, support and speak for us. We'll be fine. :)

OiMissus · 03/08/2011 09:46

thanks for the link to the yoga pants msbuggy. I need to invest (more expense!) in something for the gym, and I can test if I can get away with them in the office...
(I had sent off for a maternity swimsuit, but then my sister who has just dieted successfully, gave me a couple of size 16 swimming costumes, which fit me and bump perfectly! - I'm a size 12 normally. £30+ saved! so if you need a swimsuit - try the sales in larger sizes before splashing out. Is "maternity" like "wedding", where suppliers automatically add 30% to the price?)

jomouse · 03/08/2011 10:33

Can I just say...3 months until maternity leave, 3 months until maternity leave, 3 months until maternity leave!
Please let the time go fast!
Re: swimsuits. I'm going to try a M&S tankini in a larger size and see how that works. The amount that matrnity specialists charge is a rip off - although MsBuggy, I'm alsdo in line for those yoga pants, they look really nice
Its my birthday this weekend and I have realised that this is the first one I will have been sober for 20 years - how shaming is that?

I also had a look at the nub test yesterday...its totally on border between boy and girl - just at that 30 degree line. How accurate is this or is it just another wives tale?

Morning Ladies

Kate I don't envy you in the heat of the tube everyday.
Seven good luck with your scan today.

I live in flip flops and sandals most of the year including winter. Just put my wellies or uggs on if I have to go out in the snow. My feet get hot really quickly and flares up my psorisis.

My ankles were swollen last night - damn heat.
I brought a tankini in the George sale at the weekend, in the next size up. tried it out Monday night and it fitted lovely. bargain. I never splashed out on maternity wear except for jeans, other than that brought the convient size necessary in regular clothes at the time needed.

I'll be assessing the nub test again next week when we haev our scan.

plupervert · 03/08/2011 13:04

Re: shoes, these are very good, and particularly these ones for summer, as they are breathable. If they are not the mesh ones, they tend to be a bit hot for summer.

Sorry the latter are available in such limited sizes; it must be the end of season stuff. (don't forget to check all colours, though!

OiMissus · 03/08/2011 13:21

he he he plupervert I was thinking whilst following the link, "if she's directing me to the crocs site..." !
Phew! they were actually very nice. :)

And Thank you jomouse - what a fabulous reminder! 15 weeks until maternity leave for me. That means... 17 weeks til el bambino arrives! Not long now! It'll be here before we know it!

msbuggy can you recommend any good breastfeeding books or downloads, so I can do a bit of reading up?

BeeMyBaby · 03/08/2011 13:39

jomouse & oimissus i am jealous that you only have 12/15 weeks till mat leave - I've got another 17 weeks - I am currently looking forward to all the extra time I will have with my DD (as I remember when she was born she didn't do much for the first 8 weeks) so I'll have someone fun to play with this time :)

msbuggywinkle · 03/08/2011 14:36

OiMissus In my opinion, the very best breastfeeding book out there is LLL's 'The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding' There is nothing it doesn't cover.

Incidentally, you lot are bad for my bank balance. Just ordered shoes!

OiMissus · 03/08/2011 14:53

Bank balance - yep - just ordered the book! Thanks.
I was going to call into Mothercare at lunchtime to look at the yoga pants but I forgot. (All consumed with consumption of sandwich.)
I'm not going to start buying shoes yet. I'm not suffering yet. And I have sandals enough to see me through the Summer.
...But I did look at the AllSaints Online Sale from the emailer that came through this morning and ordered a baggy dress, jumper and jumper dress. Whoops! I'll start saving tomorrow. Promise!

plupervert · 03/08/2011 15:07

Sorry, I didn't mean to alarm you with the link, OiMissus! (And at least it wasn't the MN bat....) DS got blisters from his Crocs this summer, poor thing, so I would hesitate to trumpet them. Lands' End are good, though, very flexible about returns (that's very important for a mail order company) and good value, especially in the sales. Just remember to check what US size you are, as they are American, and that's at least one unnecessary return if you get it wrong!

Awomancalledhorse · 03/08/2011 15:43

plupervert, you're a shoe website angel!! They look so comfy (and cheaper than what I was going to get, DH will be happy), thank you!!

We've finally decided to replace the dishwasher which broke 2 years ago (obviously it was thrown out then!), because of my condition, thank you uterus squatter! Grin

sevendwarves · 03/08/2011 17:09

We had our scan earlier bu weren't able to find out the sex as baby was being awkward and had it's legs crossed, I'm a bit gutted. I've got to have another scan in a fortnight as the sonographer wasn't able to see the spine or the kidneys but everything else looked ok. I think we're still going baby shopping tomorrow as there's a few things we need which are unisex anyway.

BluebellsintheSpring · 03/08/2011 19:26

Seven that's so frustrating but at least there's another scan coming up soon! I tried the nub test on my scan photos but could see nothing at all on 10 week pic which was fairly rubbish and baby is just a spec! 20 week scan photos are torso upwards so no hope - will just have to be patient.

Secretary in work put me in foul form today - I had been off on hols and then she had, so she hadn't seen me in 4 weeks. She opened with telling me how massive I was and that she couldn't believe I was only 22 weeks. Followed this up with - are you sure you're not having twins? When I confirmed that I was only having one baby she said, well you're going to be huge by December, then you've filled out all over - you can really see the weight on your face! Then she said, don't worry, it's probably because you were off and were probably just sitting around (how does she know how I spend my hols).

The thing is I'm 5'7, was 8 stone 7lbs before pregnant and am now 9st 6lbs - I don't think a stone is excessive for 22 weeks of pregnancy and I don't think my face has got fat!

Sorry, rant over.... Needed to get that one off my chest. Went to my desk and cried, then promptly wised up!

OiMissus · 03/08/2011 19:38

bluebells - that sounds like one jealous secretary to me! 1 stone is perfectly fine. Tell her that you're blooming in good health, never felt better or happier! Remind her that when your gorgeous little baby is born, not only will you have a wonderful new baby, but you'll get your petite figure back - but she'll be stuck with her ugly mug and shitty attitude for the rest of her life!

sevendwarves · 03/08/2011 22:36

oimissus that's a great response.

I just done nub theory on our 11 week scan photo and it definitely looks like a girl. Both of the wives tales I've heard of indicate a girl as well but obviously it's not exact enough to rely on. Hopefully I'll find out at the next scan.

cara2244 · 03/08/2011 23:00

Hi ladies, I'm from the July thread and had my baby 5 weeks ago. I have just listed my maternity clothes on Ebay, lots of summery items for the hot weather, all at 99p starting price. I think they will go cheaply as the photos are rubbish but I don't have time to do better ones, with a newborn and a 2 year old. I'm also giving away a free baby sleepsuit with each purchase. If you're looking for any clothes, PM me and I'll give you the link. Jojo Maman, Topshop, Next etc. Good luck with your babies!

OiMissus · 04/08/2011 07:30

Morning all! (this thread is my new addiction) How are we all today? have fun shopping seven - the scan is showing a nice healthy baby so far, and that's all that's important. :)
I have decided that the twinges I feel, must be what other people call flutters - or the baby moving, because otherwise, I haven't felt anything.
I'm still annoyed with bluebell's secretary lady... I've had nothing but warmth and excitement from all my colleagues, and it's reallty nice - I've never spoken to them as much in the 7 years I've been here - it's a fantastic feeling. Where are you bluebells? I'm coming over to tell her she's an arse!

OiMissus · 04/08/2011 07:35

oh and awomancalledhorse you made me chuckle with your squatter reference. A couple of times, when talking about the baby taking all the nutrients I eat, I've called it "the parasite". Which I think is a bit funny, but it tends to shock people.
People can be so touchy. Wink

msbuggywinkle · 04/08/2011 09:21

Really vile woman bluebell, I second OiMissus's suggestion!

Well, as much as I do love my PIL, their attitude to us having another girl has been pretty horrible. They said 'oh dear' and haven't asked about the pregnancy since, if fact have been ignoring me and we usually chat a couple of times a week.

Why can't people (in general, I've had comments from others too) get it into their heads that we are thrilled to be having another girl?!? I wouldn't say so before we knew the gender, but we actually both had quite a strong preference for another girl, we really enjoy raising our girls and actually think that some things will be easier having all one gender - not least that I don't need to go lurk on the 'feminist parenting of boys' thread and spend a fortune on books!

Rant over - can you tell this has been annoying me for days? Grin

Awomancalledhorse · 04/08/2011 09:36

Bluebell, what an odd lady?! I assume she is gorgeous. Hmm

OiMissus, it's odd how protective people have gotten over my parasite...joke comments like 'Nope, not breast feeding, Mcdonalds Milkshakes are much easier' (obv not to MW!) people get huffy over?!

msbuggy, so it's your fault they're having another Granddaughter? Do you think they just need time to 'get over' the news? Or are they likely to act like that until december?
Tell them you'll call her Keith & raise her as a boy, that'll sort things out Grin

plupervert, I ordered shoes last night! Which shouldn't be that exciting but no other shoes fit me atm, grrrh.

Awomancalledhorse · 04/08/2011 09:53

Just got my 20 week email from Hipp (the baby food company), yay on being halfway there, it said;
Katie Price came out as the most admired celebrity mum in the HiPP 'Mums know best' survey Hmm Anyone admire her?

DarciesmumandBump2 · 04/08/2011 10:04

Morning Ladies

Bluebell Shock about the reaction of your colleague. I think OiMissus had got the right idea about telling her straight Grin

Msbuggy Will they come round to the idea of another granddaughter?

Seven Good to see you have a healthy baby and hopefully he/she will behave for the next scan LOL.

baby was really kicking this morning think he/she wasn't happy about my chesty coughing.

I really need to do a clothes and shoe shop at end of the month, can't afford to now :(
