i'm trying to workout maternity too...we are lucky and get 6 months full pay, 3 months half pay ... i think we can afford to take the 9 months, plus a month unpaid, then my 6 weeks annual leave, and one weeks paid parental leave on top ... but my baby brain wont let me work out when 3 weeks before the 13 december is!!

Cheaptrick · 02/08/2011 09:20

Random post as i just have to tell someone!

The new Jojo mama bebe book has just come and there are loads of cute clothes i want to get for our new baby but i have to wait til thursday until scan to find out if its a girl or boy and i can't wait.

Also my mother and baby massage book and oils have come this morning so i'm going to learn how to do baby massage. My son is currently having great fun playing with the box and the loose-filling that looks like watsits! it has keep him quite for an hour now Grin

kri5ty · 02/08/2011 09:25

Did anyone use the "nub theory" on their 12 week scan to find the sex out? i only just found out about it yesterday, but when i went back and looked at the scan pic, it showed a boy and we were told at the 20 week scan it was a boy!

cheaptrick my cat loves those watsit things!!

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 09:37

Nub theory??
Who do you work for Kristy, I'm changing my job!!! I get 6 weeks at 90% of may salary and then go on to statutory pay (currently £124 a week I think!!!)

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 09:37

my - not may...

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 09:49

Just looked up nub theory, and checked our first scan... Our first scan was more like a scribble than an image, and there's no nub visible.

kri5ty · 02/08/2011 10:03

The nub on ours is very visable, OH thought it was a foot, i thought it was the cord, but looking back it shows a boy :)

I work for Virgin Trains, they are Brilliant, i used to work for Virgin Atlantic, then i swapped a plane for a train, as i knew i would be settling down in a few years and having a baby, and didn't want to be constantly out of the country!

HoneyLovesCake · 02/08/2011 10:38

kri5ty I am Envy I'm self-employed so it's statutory maternity pay for me (currently £128.73 OiMissus) for 39 weeks max & nothing for DP who's also self-employed. We're hoping to have back-to-back pregnancies fingers crossed, no clue what we'll do then as I'll be entitled to nothing :( Doesn't seem fair after years of NI contributions but that's life I suppose.

msbuggy We're also planning on an M&S xmas; although I'm hoping to get a small chest freezer on freecycle or ebay & fill it with post-birth meals & xmas goodies to supplement. I usually make most of Delia's xmas book, I've already got post-its marking the recipes that can be made ahead & frozen. Let's see how I feel about all that cooking in the 3rd trimester Grin

plupervert · 02/08/2011 10:41

Hi, all. we're back from North America and moving hosue in a couple of weeks, so I will probably continue struggling to keep up with you all! However, it's nice to see you all here!

Baby (22+ weeks) is kicking a bit, but nothing that can be felt outside of me, so DH and DS are depending on me to tell them what's going on inside. Can't wait for the moment when one of them first feels something. I fear DS may wet himself with excitement, as he is already very keen on this baby (hope she doesn't have colic/reflux and seem to hate his guts because she's always crying... one distressed child would be quite bad enough!)

DarciesmumandBump2 · 02/08/2011 11:06

Hey,

kri5ty Nub theory - first i've heard of it, looked at my scan and could poss be a boy but don't really know what i'm looking at tbh.

Plu Its great when they will be able to feel it for the first time. DD thinks its weird lol. Moves alot looks like I have waves going on in my stomach lol.

So tired today thanks to DP waking me up at about 6am :( because he couldn't sleep! typical aye.

With regards to food over xmas i'll do my normal sainsburys shop and already delegated that we will go to Neils mums for xmas day.

kri5ty · 02/08/2011 11:13

Nub Theory (i only found out 2 days ago... but i thought it would be "fun" to have a look at the 12 week scan to see if it was correct and it was) :)

www.baby2see.com/gender/external_genitals.html

If you go to the bottom, there are 2 boxes, pink and blue, that show examples of what the num looks like on a girl and on a boy

I think we were just lucky our 12 week photo is excellent! (and 20 rubbish)

kri5ty · 02/08/2011 11:16

honey we are looking for a chest freezer too... great minds think alike!

I feel sorry for all of you wo only will get stat maternity :( i am hoping to go to uni next year... but i may put it off for another 2 years, and try for our second baby next year, whilst i have such good benefits in my current job

HoneyLovesCake · 02/08/2011 11:24

Feeling very guilty. I'm supposed to be waiting for a surprise but I looked up nub theory & compared to my scan pics Blush

Serves me right; I couldn't see anything Grin Don't know how I'm going to get through the 32 wk scan...the suspense is making me feel sick!

DarciesmumandBump2 · 02/08/2011 11:27

I have an excellent pic from my first scan I was 13 weeks. Looks like legs are in the way. However, there is a white line by legs that looks flatish - would that mean a girl possibly?

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 11:31

Oh if we get a new house, I could get a chest freezer too and put it in the garage.
I'm still not getting any movements or kicking at 22+ weeks. :(

mopsytop · 02/08/2011 11:36

I don't get any maternity at all as I am a PhD student and my funding ran out a cpl months ago. It is quite annoying as I paid NI for years (went back to do a PhD after working for years).

lalababy · 02/08/2011 11:46

Waaa... legs are in the way.. .can't see! So I guess I still have to wait till friday to find out... can't take the waiting!

Wow kristy ... I thought I had a good deal at work with 6 months full pay, plus 6 months at stat pay. But your deal is amazing with the extra 3 months at half pay. Jeez... ! I do feel sympathetic for everyone who are mostly on stat pay!

Hmmm xmas ... I am due on the 18th so I am not even sure if I will have had the baby, be overdue, be in labour...! Me and DH are here in London this year due to the baby, and my friend is not going back to Oz either so she said she would cook Xmas dinner at our new place. (Moving in on the 17 August YIPPEEEEE!!!) Plus my mum is flying over for the delivery and to help out during the first few weeks so... I guess she will help with the cooking too. And ofcourse DH's sister is not going back to Oz for the holidays either this year... so I guess she will be over too :)

Wow my first Xmas in the UK... it is going to be strange to be cold on xmas rather than frying in 35 degree heat :)

kri5ty · 02/08/2011 12:17

darcies it could be, if it is horizontal... ours is flat too, but it goes up at about a 30 degree angle

lala o how i would love to be in 35 degree heat! i am a sunbird and i NEED a holiday... a proper one, but we went travelling last winter, and with baby this year, i guess can't have everything :o it will be sooo nice for you for your family to be here!!

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 12:24

lala - hadn't realised you were from Oz.
Hopefully you'll enjoy the winter. A "traditional" Christmas - freezing cold, dark in the evenings, with all the houses and shops lit up. :) love it. I tried a Xmas in NZ once, and it didn't seem right. Fake snow in the shop windows in full on sunshine!
It's going to be tough though, especially if it snows - we may all end up having homebirths - planned or not!

kri5ty · 02/08/2011 12:25

thats what im worried about vanessa... the taxis near to me didn't run last year!!

DarciesmumandBump2 · 02/08/2011 12:55

Maybe my 20 week scan next week will give me a better chance of seeing - esp as DP won't let me find out from the sonographer next week :(

kri5ty · 02/08/2011 12:57

awww darcies i convinced my OH to let us find out!

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 13:15

If it's any consolation darcies I think I regret finding out. Somehow a little bit of the magic has gone. (only a little bit) I had no preference what we were having, and plan to make the nursery neutral anyway. It was only for buying clothes that we found out... Now I wonder why we did.

DarciesmumandBump2 · 02/08/2011 13:20

DP says I have to wait to open my xmas present lol.

BeeMyBaby · 02/08/2011 13:45

Just to go back to bottle feeding/expressing, as I went back to work when DD was 4 months old last time I found it took a couple of days to understand a bottle, but after getting the right kind of teet for her it was fine - though personally I found expressing a suffiecient amount for her was very painful, so stopped EBF when she was 5 months and started to combination feed. What I found far more difficult was weaning her off the bottle (only managed when she was 16 months), so this time I will be avoiding bottles if possible.
