Oimissus I am quite looking forward to my first xmas here... It will be awesome... firstly at least the weather is right for a roast bird and xmas pudding!

But gosh I really hope I don't end up having a homebirth... I read all these horror labour stories... and I am scared out of my mind! Between talk of tearing, cutting, burning, unbearable... worst pain of your life... I almost don't want to have the baby come out at all. I am set on an epidural...

I am SCARED!!!!

Darcies based on what everyone else said re the scan... maybe you can't help but work out whether it is a girl or a boy!

kri5ty I need a holiday too! But I have used up all my leave for the year already :(

sevendwarves · 02/08/2011 14:46

Hope every

sevendwarves · 02/08/2011 14:50

Sorry!

Hope everyone is having a good day. Took DS for a picnic in the park earlier, it's so hot out there and now I'm knackered!

Has anyone else got pregnancy brain? I was struggling to unlock the door this morning then realised I was turning the key the wrong way.

I had already decided after last time that I was going to FF this baby from the start, but after yesterday's bf discussions I've decided that I'll at least try to give the baby colostrum then evaluate whether to continue bf'ing or not, providing I make it to full-term this time that is.

msbuggywinkle · 02/08/2011 15:46

seven I like your plan. If you do decide to stop after colostrum though, remember you'll need to look after yourself and probably express until you're comfortable to make sure you don't get blocked ducts/mastitis. I would hate anyone to have to suffer it!

Mrsxstitch · 02/08/2011 15:54

I was scared of trying to bf again after the treatment I got last time. It felt as if those who went straight to ff were treated with a lot more civility than those who tried to bf and failed IYSWIM :(. I have however decided I want to try again, but will tell the MW what I think of her if she screams at me again.

I am trying to keep my leave so I can stop slightly earlier and not have to struggle with fitting behind the wheel when I am big. Last time I had to give up driving because by the time I put the seat back to fit in my bump I could no longer reach the pedals Blush.

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 16:01

I plan to stop two weeks before the due date, but I'm lucky in that I can work from home if I need to. I've planned to take off 21 weeks in total. 6 at 90%, 12 at statutory, and then 3 weeks holiday - which falls over Easter, so I benefit from a couple of bank holidays. So I'm going to try and save up to carry me through the 12 weeks.
And in the meantime I'll continue to play the lotto and dream about never having to work again. :)
lala you're reading the wrong stories! All the stories about homebirth that I've read, make me want to do it at home in a birthing pool!

mopsytop · 02/08/2011 16:05

Mrsxstitch a midwife screamed at you for failing to breastfeed? WTF? How is that supportive in ANY way? You should have reported her! although I guess if you are stressed and struggling and being treated badly, you mightn't have felt up to reporting anyone. That's terrible though!

Mrsxstitch · 02/08/2011 16:21

I couldn't get dd to latch on so asked for help. She got in my face and screamed: 'you do need to feed your baby you know, don't you love her or something'. She had me convinced I was a rotten mum, I was too scared to complain in case they thought I was bad too.

mopsytop · 02/08/2011 16:28

!!!! That is shocking. I can't believe it. What a way to treat a new mother. And how DARE she suggest you didn't love your baby. I feel so angry on your behalf. Maybe you should mention this to your current midwife and let her know you were traumatised (and who wouldn't be by such a b*ch) so that you can ensure you get the proper support this time? I keep hearing stories about unsympathetic and unhelpful midwives when it comes to breastfeeding. It's making me nervous about trying. I am glad we have mrsbuggy on here for advice. I can't believe that midwife, you poor thing Mrsxstitch!

Mrsxstitch · 02/08/2011 16:30

I have had it put on my notes that she isn't allowed anywhere near me. She also made comments about me being too young, my marital status etc ( I was 28 btw). Plenty of reasons not to let her near me.

mopsytop · 02/08/2011 16:32

I can't believe that. She should be reported. Imagine making comments to a new mother. It's none of her business what your age or marital status are!

mopsytop · 02/08/2011 16:34

p.s. I hope I don't meet a midwife like that. Normally I am well able to stand up for myself, but when I am feeling tired or ill, I know I would just cry. Especially in a situation having just given birth, being exhausted and not really knowing what I am doing, I know I would be so upset. I hope we all have nice midwives for our births and don't need to stand up for ourselves!

lalababy · 02/08/2011 16:43

Gosh.. I can't understand how anyone let alone a MW could behave like that. I would have been livid. How is it that there is so much push towards breastfeeding - yet the support is not there. How on earth can someone relate not being able to feed with not loving the baby!

lalababy · 02/08/2011 16:44

God... I wish I could hunt her down and slap her for you!!!

sevendwarves · 02/08/2011 16:57

mrsx that's bloody awful! Why is it some midwives are lovely are some are just horrible?

When I was in labour the MW on duty didn't believe me because the machine which is meant to measure contractions (no idea what it's called!) didn't work on me. It was only when I was screaming in pain she fetched another MW for a second opinion, 2 hours later DS was born. I'm just so glad I was in hosital with pre-eclampsia, we live an hour away so if I'd have turned up and been sent home I doubt we'd have made it back in time.

sevendwarves · 02/08/2011 16:59

Sorry we're probably scaring first timers, I should add that most midwives are great, the machines work on most people, and you know when you're in labour without a machine having to tell you!

msbuggywinkle · 02/08/2011 17:11

lalababy money, is the answer. To train a BFC takes a minimum of a year, to train as a Lactation Consultant takes 3 years, that means we're expensive to pay for the NHS. So they rely on midwives who have very little breast feeding training in their degrees. Which means that they don't have the most up to date knowledge unless they happen to have a particular interest in bfing.

Happily, in the UK there are lots of volunteer BFCs, LLL, NCT and ABM all train counsellors. We are just a phone call away!

AS for midwives, I'm not a good person to ask as what I want from a mw is to be left alone unless there is a problem. So, I didn't like the ones I had with DD1 and did like the ones I had with DD2!

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 17:48

Right ladies, sorry to go off subject, but please cross whatever you can cross for me - Someone's coming to view the house in 10 minutes! It must be sold so that we can move and start working on the nursery! Wish me luck! Grin

sevendwarves · 02/08/2011 17:53

Good luck! If they don't like it send them our way to look at our empty flat, we need the money to get the guttering done.

Got our scan tomorrow, I'm so excited! DS thinks we're just going to see whether the baby has a willy, he keeps saying he wants a baby sister.

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 18:09

Well, the viewing was quick - but it's only a small house - but she seemed to really like it. She said all the right appreciative things, she was excited to see it and had shown all her friends pictures online, and she said she'd be in touch. So fingers crossed!!!!
She better had buy it, I've missed my bodypump class to show her around!! Grin

KateM77 · 02/08/2011 20:00

Aaagh! The tube was hell in this heat. I'm not sure what was worse - the temperature or the smell. Either way I almost fainted on my way home tonight. I know I shouldn't complain about warm weather but this is ridiculous! Very glad it'll be winter when I'm at my biggest

OiMissus · 02/08/2011 21:30

Good luck with the scan seven!

BluebellsintheSpring · 02/08/2011 23:34

OiMissus fingers crossed - know what that feeling is like!

Wow there are some amazing maternity benefits out there! I'm public sector and people keep telling me how fortunate I am - I have 6 weeks 90% pay, then 6 weeks half pay, then down to statutory until 9 months when it stops which I thought was great ( and it still is compared to many). I'm very impressed with Virgin - what a family friendly company!

Had never heard of nub theory - my first scan was 10 weeks so probs a little too early but away to check the 10 and 20 week scan pics out anyway....!

OiMissus · 03/08/2011 07:25

Morning all, I don't envy kate travelling on the tube. Are you starting to get protective of the space around your bump yet?
And question to all, what's the best season to be big? I found that there are lots of baggy linen-type summer dresses around that look nice on, and disguise the bump or gently cover the bump without making me look huge, and due to the holiday tan, I don't need to wear tights (gonna spread that as long as I can with false tan) but I'm dreading Winter. I haven't yet found a pair of nice maternity trousers for work. And when we start wrapping up warm, we're going look HUGE!

Mrsxstitch · 03/08/2011 07:56

Its what to wear on my feet that's bothering me. Last time I had to wear flip flops due to swollen feet Blush. Flip flops and Nov/Dec don't really mix. My work are quite flexible about what you wear when pregnant, thankfully but don't know what to wear yet. Last time I wore a maternity 'tent' and white coat but was working on the wards then.

I have had a look at my 12 week scan pictures but they don't show the right angle. 20 week scan they said it looked like a girl but wasn't 100% clear and MIL convinced still that it is a boy. Stick to neutral stuff and I'll be ok. Chucked out all baby stuff about 2 years ago as I wasn't going to have any more Blush.
