Georgimama: I would not put too much emphasis on the test. The stripes appear because of the pregnancy hormone which would stay in your system for weeks even if something had happened, so I don't think you'd see the difference in a test just 12 hours after your first one.
A friend of mine who had an MC came up positive on the test over a month afterwards.

ImpatientCat · 04/12/2010 10:34

Just realized that did not sound as reassuring as I intended it to, just meant to say; don't worry about the test, it's probably just a small difference in the test kits, not in you.

Georgimama · 04/12/2010 10:41

Don't worry - I know what you mean! I think it can be more properly attributed to the fact that 1) last night I very methodically collected a wee sample and dipped whereas this morning I just pointed in the vague direction of the flow, as it were 2) I have drunk gallons of tea this morning and been on and off the loo all morning!

ImpatientCat · 04/12/2010 11:15

LOL Yes, that is probably it!

I did my test in a flurry of nervous panic.
We were at the inlaws for the weekend, and I only started suspecting that morning. Me and DB went and bought the test, but decided to wait until Monday morning to take it (cant remember why).

We were watching TV and I'd had massive amounts of diet coke and needed the loo, so went upstairs and suddenly decided to take the test, but was actually bursting to go, so was pacing back and forth in the bathroom desperately holding it while trying to skim read the instructions!

Thinking "sod it, it's peeing on a stick", I did the test, then read that I was supposed to leave it for 3 minutes before looking, and had a stupid moment of irrational panic as I had already looked!! I got two stripes almost instantly, but then stood for three minutes with my back turned knowing I was pregnant but being utterly confused. "Must wait for 3 minutes!"

My boyfriend completely guessed what I was up to and was outside when I was done. Then we had to come up with some excuse to "go for a walk".

Being a computer nerd, I kept wondering if I'd somehow "saved my progress" before hand, in case I wanted to go back and undo. Really weird. As it was I didn't want to undo, so all is well. Grin

Anyone else with a slightly irrational reaction to the news?

Waverley82 · 04/12/2010 11:52

That's hilarious ImpatientCat. I did a test as period was a couple of days late - not really sure why tho as I'm not very regular so two days late is nothing. Just had a feeling I guess...

Anyway I was still convinced it would be negative so did it then left it on side of bath while I hung up some laundry. DH checked it first, saw the two lines and called me through. We basically stared at each other for a bit without saying anything and then DH suddenly said "I think I need the toilet".

So he settles himself down on the loo with his iPad (sorry if tmi!) and I just go back to hanging up the laundry! All very surreal! We didn't believe it till we did the other tests about an hour later...

challsworth · 04/12/2010 13:41

ohanotherone - the stag dance! Have you ever watched Men Behaving Badly? Martin Clunes puts his hands on his head to represent antlers than dances the room around going 'ah-roo-gah I am the stag'. I think if I filmed it he'd die of embarassment!
Still all rather surreal. Getting signs that the 4 (am I mad) tests I've done must be right as I've got really sore boobs and had to leave the post office today as was stood next to a smelly person and felt really sick - how embarassing as they could see me dry heave outside the door Blush

RockinRobinBird · 04/12/2010 13:46

Hello all. Can I join please? Got BFP this morning after 6 months ttc. Our experience was a bit like Waverley's :o. DH and I have both been bedridden all week with bronchitis. In the middle of it all I vaguely remembered i should have been testing today and there it was. Called DH in to have a look, he started coughing and said he'd forgotten all about it. I started swearing and ranting because the only thing keeping me alive at the moment is nurofen and now I can't have any :(

It really odd because we were beginning to worry about the lack of result and now we've got it, it's the worst timing because I need medication and I know as soon as I get better I'll start to feel sick! Typical. Am pleased though, just preoccupied and the enormity of it hasn't hit me yet :)

Congrats to everyone else!

Hersetta · 04/12/2010 14:06

Wow - welcome to all the newcomers. We've got loads in the last 24 hrs!

I did my test with an ebay cheapie the day after my period was due. The line was so faint that at first I thought it was negative, but a scond look under bright halogen lights and I saw what I thought was a very, very faint line. Didn't tell DH (he was in bed as it was 6.30am) but bought a digital test at Boots near the office. I waitied about 4 hrs and did the test in the loos at the office and when it came up 'pregnant' I took a photo of the result with my blackberry and emailed it yo my DH. Only problem was he couldn't read the word as it wasn't particuarly clear so I have to phone and tell him.

Feel really tired today and boobs are very sore which is par for the course for me. They were about my only symptons last time as well.

Congrats to all those that have just joined!! August is starting to fill up a bit more.

For those of u who have already had a pg have a ques for u: starting to worry something is not quite right as for 3 or so days nausea seems to have disappeared. Boobs still feel a bit sore but not hugely and still quite tired but that may have something to do with working oncall nights this week. Have had no bleeding but worry that something has gone wrong to make symptoms subside. Anyone experienced this?

RockinRobinBird · 04/12/2010 18:09

ddas, really try not to worry (I know its hard). Symptoms like nausea and tiredness mean very little, some people never get them at all. Even some bleeding is normal. You have to trust that everything is ok.

Hersetta · 04/12/2010 18:10

Yes quite normal ddas. Hormone levels fluctuaate and then even out resulting in really strong feelings and then none at all. I had a friend in January who a week after finding out she was pg announced that she thought she'd lost the baby as all the symptons had gone away. Her DS is now 2 months old!

Hi can I join
I tested this morning and got a really faint positive, then re did it again after a few more hours on a different test and got the same, so i guess its a positive then? but not really sunk in because with my other 2 i never tested this early, always about a week late before i actually realised and thought to test so had a really strong line. but i think i would be due 13 august? 3rd pregnancy and im 24 from london

Georgimama · 05/12/2010 08:04

Morning all - hi Firawla. False positives are really rare, especially 2 in a row! If you're due 13/8 you're probably only 4 weeks so faint lines not surprising. Congratulations.

Does anyone else work? I'm wondering when to tell work. Not yet clearly but it is going to come as a bit of a shocker - we've got 2 secretaries in our small department of 5 people going on maternity leave in the next few weeks. Boss is not going to be impressed (especially as she is childless career woman). Oh well. Last time I worked somewhere else, had been known to be trying for a long time and was so excited I was happy to tell colleagues quite early. I think it was 10 weeks. This time I am going to aim not to tell them until they actually ask!

ddas · 05/12/2010 08:19

I'm not telling work until I start to show either! Work in an very career minded environment so leaving it as late as possible.

northeastmummy · 05/12/2010 08:51

Good morning everyone! Please can I join you? I got BFP this morning and haven't even told my DH yet - he's still asleep after DD2 was up in the middle of the night.

I'm flitting between being completely and utterly excited and delighted ... and a little bit terrifed at the thought of juggling 3 DCs.

I'm so happy to find so many people on here. I'll add my stats.

Hi all, and welcome to the newly preggers!

Georgimama : I am working and have already told my boss. I work for a large company and they are very family friendly (that's actually the reason I accepted a job there even though I got paid a lot better as a freelancer, us birds have to plan ahead). I am lucky and have the option to work from home. It is a little frowned upon if you overdo it, so I chose to tell my boss in case I get attacked by the sickness and want to stay home a bit more or split my hours so I work at the times of day I feel better. I am very privileged to have all these options, I don't know if I would share it with my boss if that wasn't the case. I'm quite career minded myself and don't want this to limit the opportunities I get at work. Would hate to be left out of projects now because I'll be going on leave in 7 months time.

But then I am Scandinavian, so I am generally shocked at the inequalities between men and women in the English workplace.
Angry

ImpatientCat · 05/12/2010 11:12

Waverley: that is funny, completely recognize the feeling of surrealism!

Rockbird: Hope you feel better soon! Xmas Smile

Waverley82 · 05/12/2010 11:25

I have been nervous about telling work - I'm a corporate lawyer and feel quite young to go off on maternity (will be 29 when baby born) in my field. But I actually told one of the partners I work for last week when I went for early scan, I was meant to be doing something for him and didn't want to just call in sick and leave him in the lurch so just explained had had a bit of a scare and it was very very early etc. He was actually lovely about it and seemed genuinely pleased so maybe it won't go down as badly as I thought.

Career wise it's a massive thing for me though, I will defo go back to work but not sure in what capacity - I currently work very long hours, through the night before a big deal etc, and it's not the kind of job that lends itself to part time hours... Will need to think about that a lot once we get a bit further down the line, and will probably want to have some kind of plan or proposal for how my hours would work before I tell them 'officially'.

Hi All,

I've updated my stats with my changed nickname. My DH pointed out my nickname was actually my name! Seeing as I haven't told anyone at work or friends & family don;t want people accidently finding out!

ddas I felt really sick, which is why i did the test. I've had a couple of days where I feel sick but some where I'm bsolutely fine - I'm just counting myself lucky that I don't feel sick all the time!

ImpatientCat · 05/12/2010 11:48

Waverley: Yes, would definitely go in there with a plan. Unfair as it is, if you want to be a mother AND have a career, it's pretty much down to you to resolve the logistics, and if you come up with a plan, you will not only present them with a "problem", but also the "solution", which is bound to go down well.
I have to admit, I chose my company specifically because of the maternity conditions and the flexible working hours I'll get when I go back to work. That was 3 years ago, long before we agreed to start ttc.
My boyfriend thought I was daft at the time, but he's quite happy about it now!

Georgimama · 05/12/2010 11:48

Good luck with working that one out Waverley! Not fun - I'm a lawyer too but firmly of the high street variety. I was 28 when DS was born but I only qualified this year (having paralegalled for yonks), and whilst I work full time my full time is 9-5.30 on the dot except very rare occasions. Assuming this works out I will probably go back to work full time or 4 days at the least.

Firawla · 05/12/2010 14:15

Georgimama i did another one this morning, same result so am feeling more about it. I was only due on yesterday so yes would only be 4 weeks
I dont work, good luck to everyone worried about telling their work

Firawla · 05/12/2010 14:15

sorry was supposed to say bit more sure about it
