Hi All

This is the new thread taking over from "Feb 2011... Where only us and a select few know"

So sad that not everyone will be joining us on the new thread but here's looking to the future and hoping we start to see some lovely scans and good news from everyone in the next month

OP posts:

not everyone has to take it. Only if you have certain risk factors ie history of diabetes in family, high bmi or glucose in urine will normally mean a gtt. Some people can get boderline gd which can be easily controlled through diet otherwise its a strict diet and maybe insulin in hard to control cases. Well thats what happened in my case anyway don't really know much more

scubamummy · 27/08/2010 16:42

Hi all. Great to see that scans are going well, it's such a precious moment, can't wait til my 20 week one so I can see our LO again! Can't stop looking at the first scan pic, got a real crush on him/her Blush

I've got a GTT test due in my 28th week because my dad's got type 2 (late onset) diabetes! A bit unnecessary if you ask me.

What cravings do people have? I've just hit 18 weeks and my hunger has come back with a vengeance! I've been waking up at 4am for the last 3 nights STARVING and desperate for chips with lashings of salt and vinegar [salivates...]. DH would have been sent out in the torrential rain if a chippy had been open nearby, lucky for him there wasn't! ;) Have to satiate my need with fried eggs doused in vinegar instead! Before now, I didn't quite get the force of NEED that accompanies a craving, and the fact it can just dissipate a minute later to be replaced by another need equally as strong. I fear I'm turning into a cliche!

angels1 · 27/08/2010 17:40

I had a craving for croissants for, like 2 weeks on and off. Went everywhere until I found a gluten free croissant (I'm gluten intolerant). Then when I had it, turns out gluten free croissants arn't nearly the same as 'normal' ones but can't satisfy the craving for a regualr one as I'll be in agony. Also have really really really wanted a specific veggie sausage....but again, it's not gluten free, so I can't Sad quite random! Tbh think I still have the sickness to lift bit more before I can get excited about food though.

wigglesrock · 27/08/2010 18:40

Hi all, had 16 week check up today. Got to hear baby's heartbeat, brillant but was really surprised, the midwife told me not to expect to hear anything as I'm closer to 15 than 16 weeks and she found it right away Grin.

Agree with angels I'm still really sick so am willing the cravings to start so I can maybe find something to eat!!

Have 20 week scan at end of September, a couple of midwife appts around 26, 32 weeks then every fortnight until D day. Looks like I'm also getting another scan around 36 weeks to double check fibroid situation.

ledkr · 27/08/2010 18:56

Hi all. can't do personal replies cos on phone but yes it seems common to worry around now cos don't really feel pg.think about it tho and you are still tired and other stuff.
I tried my dop today and found hb fairly quickly. Went to town amd bought 4 maternity pieces from Dorothy Perkins and they were buy one get one free but as 4 together they charged me for 2 most expensive items so only saved 6 as oppose to 17 if bought 2 in separate transactions. was so pd off I took them all back. rip off. also bought a belly support from boots its very comfy am hoping it may prevent spd starting.
Am feeling shattered now tho. Glad everyone is ok and hope the funeral went ok.

moonminmama · 27/08/2010 19:33

Thanks all for nice wishes. It was a lively service my cousin was a Chester city footy fan so it was very much centred around that which lightened the mood so to speak. He was a lovely man and there were enough people there to fill the room 4 times over!

Was exhausted this afternoon sondidnt get an afternoon out as planned unfortunately. Ds didn't mind though as dh managed to get away from work early so they spent the afternoon together while i went to bed (for 3 hoursBlush)

My 20 week scan is sept 24th can't wait!! I'm desperate to find out the sex Smile I am awaiting quad test results, had them done well over Amedeo ago and was told that if there was a problem inwouldnhear by phone within 9 days otherwise it would be by post in over 2 weeks. So fingers crossed!

moonminmama · 27/08/2010 19:34

Wanderingsheep · 27/08/2010 20:09

Glad it was a nice service MoonminMama. Smile

My cravings are salt and vinegar crisps. I've had two packets of salt and vinegar squares today! It seems to have moved on from prawn Mayo sandwiches which was a craving that I never got to satisfy as I was worried about the prawns not being part of a hot meal. Although, thinking about it now, I could just eat one!

Don't know how that happened! Pc so much easier than phone!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 27/08/2010 20:37

Another risk factor for GD is a previous big baby.

angels, could you make a batch of croissants yourself with gluten-free flour? Might get closer to the original that way.

tadjennyp · 27/08/2010 21:04

I'm quite tired today, but dh has been away all week, so putting it down to that. Glad the service was lovely moomin. Perhaps you could pop back to DP's and buy those things in two separate transactions tomorrow or getting dp to buy the second lot behind you in the queue! Grin Need to pick up the phone and book my scan, but slightly apprehensive. Oh well, needs must!

sweetnitanitro · 27/08/2010 21:14

Yours too Tadjenny? It's tough isn't it? I'm so glad DH is back tonight, my house looks like a war zone, DD has been a bugger today and she's only just gone off to sleep- think I will join her!

JustOneMorePlease · 27/08/2010 21:24

Hi everyone, sorry for the MASSIVE absence.

It is crazy with 3 at home over the holidays. We are all over most days and when we are at home there is loads to catch up on ie. washing arrrr.

Had a quick speed read through and gigle about sling cupboard!!!! Hello newbies and congrats. Great to hear so much happy, excited news.

Quick update from my end:
-Heard from CVS that was nearly 4 weeks ago that the sample they grew for extended time shows chromosomes are normal, hoorah.
-Got doppler from a friend and have heard HB, but am so knackered when everyone is in bed that I forget about it!!!
-Have already started with my old preg friend SI joint pain, but i guess being my fourth preg my pelvis is a bit ummm floppy! Got my glam physio pelvis belt on!
-Older kiddies are excited about the baby and are giving some interesting name suggestions.

Back to school next week for Ds1 and 2, and then we are moving so I promise to be better mumsnetter when we have landed! This preg is flying by, baba will be here by the time i finally complete my to-do list.

Take care everyone and stay well.
xx

Sam2302 · 27/08/2010 23:00

I have no history of diabetes in family etc but have been told that I should have the GTT because of ethnic origin. GD is apparently more common in Asian people.

tadjennyp · 28/08/2010 04:57

It could be worse nitro - they could be in Afghanistan for months on end, couldn't they? His flight is delayed so I'm hoping that it doesn't get bumped till it's cancelled and he ends up coming back tomorrow.

ledkr · 28/08/2010 10:04

morning all. I am fed up with waking so early every day. I had hip ache when led on one side, back ache led on back and shoulder ache on other side so gave up and came down to cook pancakes mmm.Day feels so long tho and i am tired by 3. Have still not unpacked my case from holiday and have been back nearly a week shame on me.Have done the washing but this cold has really floored me.
Im sure this will be hard to explain but does anybody get a funny feeling high up in tummy when they twist. It feels like the upper abs are poking out in a jerky way. No pain and it goes as soon as i twist back again and seems to be more frequent. I am going to have to see a dr next week cos its a bit odd and i never had it before.

angels1 · 28/08/2010 10:38

thanks prof for the idea of making gluten free croissants but don't think they'd work either as it's the gluten in the flour which makes croissants all stretchy and layered and airy. When I make gluten free bread it's a compeltely different process to normal bread - no kneading and it's like cake batter!

I got restless legs last night all night (still a bit now) which was really annoying and a bit painful. I usually only get it when I've been standing up for hours in the day, which I didn't yesterday. I've read people get this in pregnancy, anyone else had it? Any tips to get rid?

ledkr I get that a bit in my tummy (I just twisted to see what happened!) but mine isn't painful, just a bit odd and uncomfy like I shouldn't do it.

I'm so miserable about my weight - weighed myself this morning and weigh 2 stone more than I did this time last year [extremely embarassed emotion]. I had a back problem late last year and had to stop going to the gym so must've put on a few pounds then, but I guess eating all the time for nearly 3 months with no energy for excercise is taking it's toll. It's so depressing and I just want to cry Sad. Happy obv for pregnancy but didn't want to sneek into the obese category (my weight has gone from lower region of overweight to obese now). I bet when I see mw she'll give me evil looks when she weighs me (didn't get weighed at booking in). AndI STILL need to eat all the time with nausea so there's no end in sight....it's not like all I eat are chocolate and chips either - I've been having relatively good stuff (with the occasional naughty) but I don't have much choice still with what I eat as my body is still erksome with lots of foods. sob.

zerominuszero · 28/08/2010 11:16

Hello everyone I haven't been around for a while but I'm glad to see that everyone's keeping themselves busy with all the knitting. I can't knit myself though.... oh well.

I have to have that GTT thingy because I'm Asian/Indian (although for some reason the hospital decided that I was "Oriental/SE Asian" without checking with me Hmm) and also most of the women in my family got type 2 diabetes when they reached middle age. Darn.

So does anyone know what the problem is if I DO have an intolerance of glucose or whatever it is? Why do they care so much about it? Does it harm the baby? And what treatment is there if I do have it?

ledkr · 28/08/2010 11:49

Angels me too. just said to dh am going to Do ww as soon as baby comes and not restart drinking. you can't drink much anyway due to feeds at night. going to start gym again next week but won't hold my breath cos am so tired lethargic and motivation less. Keep seeing all these skinny birds with big bumps and nothing else. even bought size 16 mat jeans and was 12 to 14 before!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/08/2010 13:28

Basically (remembering off the top of my head here) if you have uncontrolled GD your baby tends to grow "too big" -- i.e. (a) grows to the sort of size that can give rise to problems during birth and (b) most of the extra weight is in extra fat round the abdomen. Also it increases the baby's chance of developing diabetes later in life. And because the baby gets used to a high blood sugar environment in utero it tends to lead to blood sugar crashes after birth.

If you do have GD the first thing is to start eating a diabetic-friendly diet. Essentially this is a low-GI diet, and essentially that means cutting way back on sugary stuff and refined carbs so cutting down on pasta, rice, bread and potatoes while making sure you eat some protein at every meal or snack. Then you get a blood sugar monitor to check your blood sugar before and after eating to make sure that the diet is working (and also tip you off if something you eat makes your blood sugar spike), and they review your blood sugar readings with you every few weeks. If the diet doesn't work there are some diabetes medications that have been shown to work well with GD, but in practice I think they tend to move to putting you on insulin. If you become insulin-dependent then the effects on the baby are potentially more severe so they tend to want to put restrictions on length of pregnancy (e.g. inducing early) and your blood sugar can be very unstable during labour so you need to be carefully monitored.

ElleB1980 · 28/08/2010 13:47

Hope everyone is getting on with their long weekend nicely. I just managed my first solo supermarket shop in ages, finally starting to see some middle trimester energy? I'm even debating getting the Dyson out!

Angels, I've been getting restless legs, my lovely DP has been rubbing my calves which has really helped and I also checked it with the MW at my last appointment as it can be a sign of anemia. My iron level was low, but not low enough to give me iron tablets yet. So a couple of things there for you to think about. The MW advised more leafy veg so have been eating broccoli with everything!

40Weeks · 28/08/2010 17:39

Hello everyone

Havent been around th last few days, have been is hospital with DS2 (almost 2) with a bad chest (like childhood 'asthma', only they dont really like to call it that as he should gro out of it. Poor baby is on his inhaler every four hours around the clock and he hates it!

Angles, have you thought about the Slimming World diet? Its been approved by the Royal College of MVs and it really good balanced diet, with room for treats. Its how I lost (most Hmm of my baby weight) I found it really good for cooking for the whole family too, and am sure they cayter for special dietary requirements (sorry if this has been mentioned before, havent read through since I was last on) Might be worth a try/call as I too struggle with my weight and find it so hard not to snack - they are more about what you eat rather than how much so some things you can eat unlimited amount of.

Better go, before a food fight ensues. Hope everyone else is well.

angels1 · 28/08/2010 17:48

Yeah 40weeks actually slimming world has been recommended to me by a friend but I'm just a bit dubious because of my already so limited diet. Think I'll just try and make healthy choices when I can until this nausea/oddness with food goes then I can seriously sort out my diet and maybe think about slimming world. I did mention to mw about seeing a dietician because of being so limited about food variety but she didn't seem bothered. I guess she thought if I teach cooking I must know about food, which I do, but that's probably why I'm worried - wonder how I can get enough EFA's and all the essential amino acids in my current diet.

Hope you're all keeping well anyway.

wigglesrock · 28/08/2010 18:55

angels Hopefully your nausea will start to fade soon, I don't want to tempt fate but today is the first day in 11 weeks where I haven't been actually sick and am starting to show signs of wanting certain foods.

On a different note saw your other post re car accident etc and just wanted to wish you luck and say that I was involved in an accident 2 years ago, both dds and my mum were in car, dd2 was only 7 months old, it was horrible, so scary and we weren't that badly hurt. Don't worry about not wanting to relive it, just do what feels best for you and bubs. Sorry for hijacking thread.

Getting ready for X-factor, I'm not that bothered but it is dd1's big treat!! She has a little bit of a Cheryl Cole crush (takes after her dad!!) Wink
