Hi All

This is the new thread taking over from "Feb 2011... Where only us and a select few know"

So sad that not everyone will be joining us on the new thread but here's looking to the future and hoping we start to see some lovely scans and good news from everyone in the next month

OP posts:

hey byronicheroine, great to have you here and that you're feeling better from the first few weeks. It'll be interesting to hear how and if your maternity care differs from UK. Is this your first?

sweetnitanitro · 26/08/2010 12:50

Hi byronicherione :) congrats and welcome!

Tarlia · 26/08/2010 13:29

Hi Ladies, huge Internet issues here this week. Arg! Sorry, was probably a bit emo about not getting any response but wanted to ask as was odd both pre and post scan threads missed. Glad all is good :-)

I'm on phone so unable to personally address people, so sorry!

Sad to hear so many of you have had such awful headaches, that must be horrid :-( especially since paracetamol is as good as useless. I hope you are starting to feel better now.

I too have the GD fasting test in a few weeks too, really not looking forward to it at all. I heard that I'll have to drink a disgusting sweet liquid..? That should be 'fun' I can't even swallow cough medicines or such due to taste without being sick, and that's pre preg!!

Tarlia · 26/08/2010 13:33

I've also been thinking about baby slings and which to get. DP wants to go for the BAbyBjørn but I've used this before and can only use it for such a short time, so wonder if a ring type would suit me better.. Hmmm.

How's the knitting coming along, those that started? I've put mine down and not thought about it! I really must pick it up again!

Hope you are all having a fab day :-)

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 26/08/2010 13:35

Didymos! That's the other sling!

I never actually got round to using that one in anger, though Blush

40Weeks · 26/08/2010 14:46

Whats GD fasting test?

I have baby bjorn carrier but love the look of those sling ones. Baby looks sooo cosy and you can see their face better

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 26/08/2010 14:48

The Glucose Tolerance Test. You probably won't have it unless you have two or more risk factors -- and if you do it's normally around 28 weeks (although clearly not always if Tarlia is having one earlier).

hubbard86 · 26/08/2010 15:59

i had to drink 500ml of lucazade and sit still for two hours to moniter sugar levels, so you might want to take a book with you tarlia.
Gd is gestational diabetes and to detect it you have to fast from midnight till nxt morning then have a first set of bloods and drink a sugarery drink (lucazade). Sit still for two hours then another blood test to measure how well the body breaks down the sugars

knittakid · 26/08/2010 16:40

Hi all,
ledkr, was in Granada, and some time in the north, in Vitoria. On Wed. I was on the beach and it was 46 C! the water was great though. Where were you?

We are deff. trying a sling, and that Didymos thing looks just the thing for us, prof, why didn't you use it?

re knitting Tarlia I've made some booties and a hat, which turned out just huge and had me in a constant state of fear, until my mother saw it and said that perhaps it would fit a 1 year old, not a newborn...

now working now on the sleves of www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/garter-stitch-baby-kimono and have made the head of this so far www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/elijah
sorry if the links don't work.
Have a nice eve. everyone.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 26/08/2010 16:49

Just because I had two wrap-type slings already. I bought it second-hand because it was being sold very cheaply for a Didymos and people rave about them, but started DD off with the Close (easy to manage a newborn in when you are constantly putting them in and out, whereas I find with a true wrap you keep having to retie) and then it got quite hot over the summer so I switched to the Connecta as a summer-weight sling rather than the extra layers of a wrap, and then I never really switched from the Connecta. And then I was forced to have a third baby just so that I'll get some use out of the Didymos... Grin

ledkr · 26/08/2010 17:07

You lot are slingaholics. esp the prof.do you have a sling cupboard? dd hated being strapped to me but would go on ds 12 much to passers by amusement.must have been my aroma.
Thanks for replys re cramps. def worse at night and def like p pains. reassuring that not just me.
Knitta. I was in majorca. Very hot but water lovely yes. was strutting about in bikini with this 6 month pregnant belly and a fat arse but looked so much better when brown.

cler · 26/08/2010 17:41

I have a quinny buzz and and a quinny zapp which i bought for my little one now 15 months and i love them both. Im counting the days down for my 20 week scan now, only 12 days to go then i see my little baba wriggling around inside me. Im convinced i will have another boy and already bought some gorgeous clothes.x

Tarlia · 26/08/2010 18:36

Hahaha knitta that really made me giggle, sorry :-P Poor you, that must have been a bit scary!

Lucazade, hmmm, I wonder if I can source that and convince them that it's a good plan, instead of their sugary stuff.
I'm not in the UK so things are slightly different for me 40weeks. I only have one risk factor as far as I am aware, but they like to test to be safe. I'll be 18 weeks the first time, then have to repeat it in December at 29 weeks. I can't have anything from 10.30pm!! My test is at 8am though, so will be able to eat an early lunch.

americanexpat · 26/08/2010 18:47

A few of my American friends rave about the Moby Wrap, which is notably absent from the Prof's armoury/sling cupboard. Do many shops carry a selection of slings to try?

I admit I haven't knitted anything for the baby, though I keep meaning to buy some wool to make little hats. I did pull out my sewing machine and am having a go at some maternity clothing for myself. As I'm a novice, I'm having mixed results...

angels1 · 26/08/2010 18:51

My knitting is progressing - I'm half way through a baby blanket :) Unfortunately I'm so rubbish the 'easy' pattern confused me so I''m making up my own design - it'll be a real one off (not nexessarily in a good way!!).

Love all this sling talk. I hadn't even thought about a sling yet. Is it better than one of those carrier things you strap to your front like my mum had in the olden days? I'll prob just get whatever I can find easily second hand...unless they're quite cheap.

Do like the look of the quinny buggys thingys. That might have to be top of my list.

grigglepuff · 26/08/2010 19:59

On the knitting side I'm on the last stretch of my Debbie Bliss Alphabet blanket in a lovely cream organic cotton (if link works!) www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/alphabet-blanket I have a few hats, a vest and a nice little jumper in unisex green with stripes instead of sheep www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/liam-3

I like the kimono knitta just downloaded the pattern too. I've been worrying that some of the stuff I've been knitting is too small - how can anyone ever fit in that? etc!
x

Wanderingsheep · 26/08/2010 19:59

Hi everyone!

Hope you're all ok.

Is anyone else feeling...normal? ATM I'm not feeling anything at all, apart from being a bit tired (which I feel all the time anyway even when not pg) it is most strange! When I was pg with DD I was having cramping pains all the time which I haven't had much of this time but up until recently I was feeling really bloated and heavy. Hey ho, I'd best make the most of it as I'll be back here in February whinging about how huge and uncomfortable I am! Grin

I'm really jealous of all you knitters! There's nothing nicer than a knotted blanket or Cardigan . It takes me all my time to sew a button on!

Wanderingsheep · 26/08/2010 20:01

Knitted stupid phone!

smallblackflowers · 26/08/2010 20:11

Another baby-wearer here Smile My favourite for a small baby is my Close, but also have a baby bjorn that I inherited (and didn't like very much), a Maya Wrap ring sling that I didn't like much until DD was about 9 months, but still find quite handy now and a Patapum back carrier that I used loads when trying to wean DD from nursing to nap earlier this year- she'd fall asleep on my back whilst I was cooking / cleaning, and I can carry her about in it for hours without really feeling it.

Regarding pushchairs and prams, I bought a 2nd hand Quinny Buzz with the pram attachment last time, its ok but quite cumbersome and takes up loads of room in the car boot. Thinking of selling it on and getting a 2nd hand Jane travel system as have a Jane lie flat car seat that is so much better for a newborn than a standard maxicosi type (which I also have). I have a Jane Energy pushchair that I love very much too, which lies flat so should be ok from about 4 months.

I've also had a crampy tummy at times, but again guessing its just growing pains, and my SPD has started too - not bad at the moment but a gentle reminder of what is probably going to hit with a vengeance in a month or 2.

Wanderingsheep · 26/08/2010 20:23

Oh I hope the SPD doesn't get much worse, SmallBlackFlowers. I haven't had it but I know people who have and it sounds awful. Sad

Wanderingsheep · 26/08/2010 20:26

I didn't have a sling last time but I quite fancy getting one this time. Might be helpful for when I'm taking DD to toddler groups as I can easily keep an eye on her but carry the baby round but keeping my hands free. Might help with getting jobs around the house done too! Smile

ledkr · 26/08/2010 21:08

shudders at the thought of spd recurring! Not had a twinge as yet. think it came at 22wks last time.

tadjennyp · 26/08/2010 21:55

I had a baby bjorn with my ds but he was 8lb9 when he was born and we didn't last long with it! I'm in America but we don't have many stores carrying baby equipment where I live so may have to travel to Portland.

Had my 16 week appointment today and my dcs heard the heartbeat! Also had the quad blood test and have to book my scan for 2 weeks' time. Hoping dh won't be away with work then.

worrymummy · 26/08/2010 23:34

Interesting to read all the info about slings, cars and buggies all of which I am going to have to think about but just can't quite at the moment for some reason...

A horrible change of subject here...am suffering from terrible thrush, has anyone ever tried colloidal silver/knows whether its supposed to be safe to take in pg?

On the plus side, think I have def felt sweet little movements today!!

byronicheroine · 27/08/2010 07:49

Thanks angels1 and sweetnitanitro
I feel like I've been accepted by the big girls at big school!
This is my first, and was a surprise, but we've come around to the idea and all excited now.
Childbirth here in Greece seems to be very differnt to back home - it's very medicalised and they have the highest c-section rates in europe. It's doctor-led (pregnancy is an illness, didn't cha know) and apparently in the public hospitals they try and keep deliveries within 'normal' hours!
So... we looked around on the interweb and found a lovely British midwife working at a private clinic (gulp) with her Greek doctor husband. It will be expensive, but I think I'd be so wound up going into a public hospital here it would make the whole situation workse.
I'll keep you updated!
