If you found out that your child had said this to an adult, how would you react?

A friend's DD stayed the night on Fri and was generally well behaved, if a bit moany and moody. Sat morning my DH was telling one of my girls off about something and this child said very loudly 'God, he goes on and on doesn't he', then followed this up with 'Will someone please shut him up'. She is 7. I was stunned and told her that this was unacceptable in our house, she cried and locked herself in the bathroom.

When I dropped her home I mentioned it to to her mum who didn't seem particularly bothered, she made light of it, saying that she probably didn't mean it as I interpreted it .

Just curious to see what the general view on MN is.

Really enid? I tell both mine off in front of their friends regularly. Especially DD.

Maybe it is because I have a 7yo (well will have tomorrow ) boy that I am less circumspect - and also because they are very close friends we have round mainly. And usually if I tell my 3yo off, it is because she is being mean to her friend. And I do try to be constructive about it.

well said Rosa

I'd be mortified. And would appreciate them being 'told off' for it TBH.

But I am as near 100% certain as I can be that mine would never say anything like that to another adult. They save that sort of cheek for me and DH

same here, enid. I wouldn't tell my children off in front of a friend. Just based on me knowing my children and their behaviour, not based on anyone else's children.
