Never thought I would ever need a boys name, bit after the shock of Saturdays scan we need one.

Nothing is jumping out at me, so anyone want a try.

Here's our criteria:

  1. Surname is one Syllable and starts with R, quite harsh sounding so need a name with at least 2 syllables so things like Jack are our

  2. Cannot have a name starting with R

  3. This child will be growing up in Scotland so more erm poncey upper class names will have him might as well having "beat me up" stamped across his forehead so names like Quentin, Augustus, Apollo, Cosmo etc are out

  4. I like traditional strong boys names, not keen on your more "modern" names i.e, anything with unusual spelling or starting with a K IYSWIM

  5. And of course blooming friends and family have pinched all the good ones.

So you see we have a job on our hands!

I really dislike Logan too! Not keen on the surname trend. Elliot is also from a surname.

Duncan & Finlay are actually a first names. The surnames come from the first names.
Finlay is an anglicized form of Fionnlagh and Duncan is anglicized form of Donnchadh. I pretty sure Lewis is from the Island therefore also not from a surname.

How about Struan?

I wasn't intentionally quiet about it dizzy - just didn't start a thread to announce it, as am prob not as well known amongst the new breed MNers. I have been on an ante-natal thread for months though!

I am still loving Kester. I so wish that I could talk dh round on this one.

You said lower down that Dominic was a strong contender sk - have you changed your mind about that now, as it's not on your latest list?

I like Elliot (obviously) and Marcus best from your list I think.

sweetkitty · 20/01/2010 20:33

CSWS - congratulations fab news though, did you say somewhere you are having another boy so in the same boat so to speak?

Dominic - DP not keen, I know better give him some say I suppose
Cal and Cassius - don't go with surname
Struan - I really like but doesn't really fit with girls name and DP not keen
Benedict - erm difficult one, West Coast of Scotland very partisan for want of another word not good to name your DS after the Pope IYSWIM, we are trying to stay away from names that indicate religion, I know it's shocking but it's sadly what it is like here.

Am off to look up favourites in last years stats

Don't know what we're having this time sk, except for a surprise!!

dizzydixies · 20/01/2010 20:55

CSWS its lovely news either way, congratulations and I stopped hanging about on the ante natal threads as they thought I was a weirdy stalker

here when you need me for the naming debate !!

sweetkitty · 20/01/2010 20:59

I'm still in shock mine has extra bits

seeker · 20/01/2010 21:03

I'm just going to keep saying Patrick til everyone agrees with me!

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/01/2010 21:06

Patrick's on my list if it makes you feel better Seeker. Prob for middle name though, unless we go for Dominic, as that would be a tad 'icky'.

I shall call on you to find the impossible name at some point dizzy, don't worry.

pointysaysrelax · 20/01/2010 21:07

I love Patrick but not the best for west coast of scotland

sweetkitty · 20/01/2010 21:20

DP said big no to Patrick I'm afraid

He's just annoyed I dislike Logan I think

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/01/2010 21:22

Logan schmogan. Let him have it as a middle name if he must.

stressedHEmum · 20/01/2010 21:27

Patrick, Dominic, frank (read Frances) and other such names would create a lot of problems for a child here. Any name that has an RC connection, really, wouldn't be very fair on a wee boy as it would really single him out and lead to unpleasantness.

Also have to say that names like Cassius, Henry, Kester et al would be like sticking a big sign on your back saying "give me a kicking, please". Re: Jackson, round here it isn't a poncey nane, it's a bit of a ned name. Don't know about where Sweetkitty is, though. Struan is more a name for Kelvinside or Morningside, to be honest, lovely though it is, it's not one that you will find given many West Coast little boys.

Names are very loaded here and you have to be careful. It's all very sad in a lot of ways, but it's just the way things are, really.

SK, what about Connor or Isaac. I know a couple of those.

Boobz · 20/01/2010 21:32

Well, given we have the same last name Sweetkitty, and you really are putting everyone through their paces, I'm just going to use the name you finally choose for our baby due on June 9th.

Unless it's a girl.

Or you call it Marcus.

So you have to make up your mind by 9th June please, or else my baby shall remain nameless until yours is born.

Boobz · 20/01/2010 21:34

P.S. What are your girls' names?

dizzydixies · 20/01/2010 21:38

boobz she had lovely girls names picked

sweetkitty · 20/01/2010 21:39

StressedHEMum - glad you "get" it, he will be RC but don't want an overtly RC name, local football team are the Steelmen

boobz - it's a blooming hard name, I already have a Abigail Sadie, Talia Erin and Bethany Anna Grace, this one was supposed to be Isabella Seren Mary (the Seren means Star and is after DP's Mum who passed away last year), am hoping I will have made up my mind by June 9th, I'm due May 5th

OP posts:
dizzydixies · 20/01/2010 21:42

but she'll be having her on May 4th

sweetkitty · 20/01/2010 21:47

May the 4th is my Dads birthday too Dizzy and I am SO not naming him after my Dad, could use your surname though
