Never thought I would ever need a boys name, bit after the shock of Saturdays scan we need one.

Nothing is jumping out at me, so anyone want a try.

Here's our criteria:

  1. Surname is one Syllable and starts with R, quite harsh sounding so need a name with at least 2 syllables so things like Jack are our

  2. Cannot have a name starting with R

  3. This child will be growing up in Scotland so more erm poncey upper class names will have him might as well having "beat me up" stamped across his forehead so names like Quentin, Augustus, Apollo, Cosmo etc are out

  4. I like traditional strong boys names, not keen on your more "modern" names i.e, anything with unusual spelling or starting with a K IYSWIM

  5. And of course blooming friends and family have pinched all the good ones.

So you see we have a job on our hands!

Right, Sk, know where you are now. You have to be as careful there as you do here. I really don't envy you, at all. Your girls' names are beautiful and not obvious, iyswim, it can be much harder for boys. There are very few RC families here, as you know, and most of the boys that I know seem to be named things like John, Mark, Luke and MArtin. to be honest. However, most people that I know try and keep their faith very quiet.
There used to be a couple of little girls at school with my DD and the only person that knew they were RC, apart from the head teacher and class teacher, was me, because they came to DD's Girls' Brigade and their mum wanted to know what to do at CoS services .
I can understand why other people don't quite "get it" though. I really think that if you haven't lived somewhere like this, you can't really understand what it's like. My first husband was Northern Irish protestant and even though he was completely non practicing, the idea of having a son called Sean was just too much for him and his old dad went loopy! A bit like me when OH suggested Piers

What about Daniel (I went to school with one of those, although he was never called that) or David. I can't remember if they've been mentioned. I love Logan, one of my boys is called Logan ( really wanted Lachlann or Lorcan but you see the problem.)

sweetkitty · 20/01/2010 22:09

StressedHEMum - I know where you are as well, we aren't too bad here there are a lot of RC families and the RC school is lovely, our friends are a good mixture and it's never an issue but this is not the case generally TBH. Another thing that puts me off Logan is that the street next to ours has that in it's name as has a school very close plus I know another one. Popular names here are James, Callum, Liam, Aidan, Connor, Ben, Daniel, Harry, Alex, Nathan, Ewan, Dylan, Leon, Andrew, Joseph although do know a Gregor, Lawrence and an Oliver.

I know a Lachlan in the 3 Towns too

Oh well another 15 weeks of arguing to go, with DP I mean.

lockets - I live in hope, what's it like having a chilled out child?

What about Morgan? Don't think it's been suggested yet! My ds is called this - it's a bit different, not too common but not too unusual, not too posh and hasn't got any religious connections!

pointysaysrelax · 20/01/2010 22:33

Mark's a good strong nam e

LaRagazzaInglese · 20/01/2010 22:35

Have not read through the thread so sorry if these have been discounted

Matthew
Scott (only one syllable)
Adam

Loujalou · 20/01/2010 22:45

See that Matthew is on your list and Adam has been dismissed.

mathanxiety · 21/01/2010 04:51

Is it too late to throw Jerome into the hat?

sweetkitty · 21/01/2010 08:14

Adam and Billy - already have some in the family

lockets - I think he will either be as fiesty and strong willed as the girls or the opposite very chilled and laid back. As DP says there are already 4 alpha females in this house.

There is a name out there I WILL find it
