Never thought I would ever need a boys name, bit after the shock of Saturdays scan we need one.

Nothing is jumping out at me, so anyone want a try.

Here's our criteria:

  1. Surname is one Syllable and starts with R, quite harsh sounding so need a name with at least 2 syllables so things like Jack are our

  2. Cannot have a name starting with R

  3. This child will be growing up in Scotland so more erm poncey upper class names will have him might as well having "beat me up" stamped across his forehead so names like Quentin, Augustus, Apollo, Cosmo etc are out

  4. I like traditional strong boys names, not keen on your more "modern" names i.e, anything with unusual spelling or starting with a K IYSWIM

  5. And of course blooming friends and family have pinched all the good ones.

So you see we have a job on our hands!

We too have a one syllable surname, so wanted a two syllable first name for ds that was unlikely to be shortened.

These were on our list

Quentin (our ds)
Felix
Lucas
Adam

I love scottish names.

What about Fergus, Bruce, Donald, Gregor, Douglas. Or do they all sound a bit blah blah james in Scotland?

If so, I love Marcus, Dominic, Patrick or Richie. You can't be accused of being pompous with a name like that but they are very classic and would take you anywhere.

Know the three towns well, sweet kitty, OH lived in Saltcoats for years. I live in the adjoining New Town, so most of the names mentioned would lead to a v. unpleasant childhood for my boys. I think that you have to live here to understand what it's like. Names that suit in middle England or Morningside just don't wash at all. I son't think that you'd find a Hamish, an Alisdair or Elijah, Oliver or whatever within about 100 miles of this place. And then of course you have to be wary of any names that mine seem to be less than presbyterian, which is a whole other story.

What's wrong with Bradley?
My Ds is called Bradley!

sweetkitty · 19/01/2010 16:03

I remember where you lived from another thread stressedHEmum and completely agree with you, sad but very true. In this part of the world, very sadly, a name can give away a lot that's why I am trying to stay away from names like Patrick, Dominic, Brendan IYSWIM?

There is an Oliver at DD2's nursery but sadly cannot have Oliver either.

As for DP well one of his suggestions was Anakin

pigleychez · 19/01/2010 16:21

Sk- dont joke.. i knew a family with 3 boys named Anakin,Domakin and Luke.

Verin · 19/01/2010 17:42

Gregor

Hector

any good?

sweetkitty · 19/01/2010 17:46

Not keen on Gregor and Hector well TBH he might as well have "hit me now" on his head at school, sorry

Jamieandhismagictorch · 19/01/2010 17:49

Sweetkitty - you are a challenge.

Does the suggestor of the chosen name get a prize ?

Matthew, BTW

sweetkitty · 19/01/2010 17:51

Yes Jamie but it would be boring if I went with the first suggestions though

MNers like a good naming challenge

have another 15+ weeks to decide

stressedHEmum · 19/01/2010 18:29

Anakin is a bit better than what my DH used to come up with, to be honest. For one of the boys he suggested, in all sincerity, Piers. Can you imaine that in Springside PS, where we were at the time. "Hit me now" would be an understatement. DH was brought up in the posh bit of LArgs, you see, and still has some delusions, also lived in Morningside while we were at uni.

What about Sean, although I was warned off that by my first husband for the same reasons as I was told no to Patrick.

Perhaps, Lucas or Joshua. I know a few little Joshs.

It's really hard. All the littlies here are called things like Jaiden, Kyro, Dallas, Denver or Devin and, if you're a girl Jada, Kenzie and K'tlin. Mums who are a bit older seem to like Liam, Connor, Zac, Josh, Jamie, Nathan or Ryan, with a couple of Kyles, Johns, Bens, Logan and Andrews. The bit I live in now is the council estate attached to a posher bunch of new builds, so the names are a bit saner but still nothing like Magnus, Hector or thaddeus!

The attitudes to names and what they supposedly say about you really sucks in this part of the world, to be honest. I would have loved a Gabriel (Thomas HArdy lover) and a Grainne but there's no way you could do that to a child here.

stressedHEmum · 19/01/2010 18:32

Obviously, that should say:
can you imagine that
apologies for all the other typos. My hands are really stiff today.

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/01/2010 21:45

Right, will scan rest of thread in a tick, but having read your OP I don't know what your problem is - you always wanted an Elliot, and now is your chance!

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/01/2010 21:56

Ok, have read and seen your comment re Elliot. Not familiar with Scrubs, so no opinion on that.

Given your liking for 2 of my fave boys names (Elliot and Dominic), I want to know what you think of Duncan. I see it's been suggested several times, but don't think you've commented on it. Sounds ideal to me.

sweetkitty · 19/01/2010 22:24

CSWS - I know I am a nightmare, I think I would go with Elliot but DP not so keen now, he thinks it's a bit wimpy, think nerdy boy in the class.

Duncan is a bit so so

Boys are so blummin hard to name aren't they sk? We have no idea what to call this one if it's a boy, but we're not planning on finding out the sex, so might have to have a panic once it's born!

We want to call it Elliot but we gave it to ds as his middle name in the end - bah!
