I am not going to give my baby a surname

DP and I have decided not to give our new baby a traditional surname. We have issues with both our families and no desire to perpetuate their names with our offspring.

We have two inspirational friends who have passed away. They're names were Elizabeth and Anne. In honour of them our DD will have their names as her surname. So her full name will be Iris Poppy Elizabeth-Anne.

I know some people will think this is stupid but we think it is beautiful and meaningful.

Has anyone here done anything like this? What do people think?

I should also add that your DD's father is a 'bastard man'. Maybe this is the generation that he can reclaim his family name and change it's connotation. Children will soak up who you are and what you feel.
you can decide what that is.

the friends were inspirational to you, not your child, so it's a bit OTT to give her their names as a surname.

give her their names as middle names, but not as a surname.

she will spend her whole life explaining it

or just make up a new surname.

but giving her four first names is a bit strange and so is referring to all men as bastards

Hahaha serious ISSUES. The name is total insanity, people will think you're crazy with good reason.

Must be a wind up, noone would burden their child with such a 'stewpid' surname in RL.

It's a dumb idea that will cause no end of problems.

Pick an inspirational family name for her and adopt it as your family name so you can throw off all your ties to all those b*stard men in your ancestry.

Why not pick a surname that's to do with your job. That's what a lot of surnames are anyway, to show a tradition within the family. White being bakers and Smith, blacksmiths, silversmiths etc.

What do you do? Please work in the NHS. I think Enema would make a lovely surname.

Or a colour? Or a type of tree?

Commemorate your friends by raising your child to respect their memories and the ideals they stood for. Don't give your child a silly name that's a millstone round their neck and expect them to appreciate the profundity of it.

Why don't you live as Ms Stewpid Elizabeth-Anne for a month and see how it goes?

Elizanne is a better idea all round.

what a dozy idea!

HEre is an alternative idea.

Both of you have issues with your own families. So why don't you decide on your own surname and change it by deed poll so you are no longer connected to the people you have issues with? Then when baby arrives, she bears your surname and not a flight of fancy that will haunt her all her days.

Just do it if you think it's a good idea, just be very aware that on your daughter's 18th birthday she will promptly change her name to Smith.

Apart from anything else, long surnames are a PITA - trust me, I've had two!

Please at least shorten it for her. What about Anel?

I can kind of see your point but you are going about it in an odd way imo.

I have no conection any more to my father so my children have my mothers maiden name as their surname.

I agree that if you do this you need to choose something that sounds like a surname, not just two more fist names tagged on the end.

Hope would be a nice fitting one - Iris Poppy Hope.

How about something which celebrates their female heritage then? Something pretty and exotic, like DeLaFoof, perhaps? Poppy DeLaFoof sounds fabulous.

If you really want to do this why not do the Icelandic thing and calle her poppy whatever Stewpiddottir?

(oh and PMSL at "do you work in the NHS, enema is a good surname")
