Calling children by their initials

I don't know how common it is, but I know a few children (all boys) that are almost exclusively called by their first and middle initial (JC, JP, JJ, AJ, KD, etc.). I've always thought it was cute and said I'd do that if I ever had a boy. Our daughter's initials are going to be DJ, and I'm now thinking that I'd like to call her that mostly. Just wondering what others think of this idea. Does it work for a girl?

I don’t think you need to pre decide the pet name you give the kid before you’ve even named them. Just wait and see how things go. It’d be a bit odd to refer to a newborn as DJ but whatever

Let people do things that make their lives easier.

You can call your DC anything you want 😁I've known plenty of people called by their initials or even a single letter if their given name is complicated.

How does her other parent feel about it?

As you know, DJ can also stand for disc jockey (on the radio) or dinner jacket ...

Do you like her name(s)? I'd try calling her that first.

That was DW. DJ was Full House. And then they'd shorten it further to Deej if the dad was having a heart to heart with her.

I didn't really like it for either character.

Loads of male JPs and PJs in Ireland. Haven't met a girl with the initial thing though. I remember Pamela Anderson's character in Baywatch was CJ.

My parents do this to me (i am female and in the UK). I dont mind it. Others wouldnt know as they dont call me it in public - only when we are in our family unit with my siblings eg at christmas or whatever. I have initials that have also been used for names of characters in some tv shows.

Edit to add DJ is the name of the daughter in Hacks in case it would bother you if people thought you were inspired.

A few years ago DJ was a very common name (actual name) given to boys by parents who liked dance music. That’s what people will think if she’s known as DJ. Don’t do it to her.

Just remembered that I know a little girl called Cece, which is kind of similar.

I taught a child a couple of years ago called CeeJay…so taking the whole initial thing a whole step further!

Cece is nice. Something J for Junior is not so nice.

I always think why even bother with giving them a proper name if you know you’re going to do that. It’s definitely an American thing and not one I like.

The ones I hear most are JJ, AJ, TJ or CJ, but always boys. Very American trend. There was female DJ on Full House, years ago (Donna Jo). I really don't like it, but obviously it's up to you.

Personally, I really dislike this trend. I think Kerry Katona calls her daughter DJ, when her actual name is something like Dylan-George. I do prefer a name with a bit more weight to it. I don’t feel like two letters is enough for a whole human.

Oh and there's CJ Cregg (played by Allison Janney)on West Wing

In Riverdale, the girl wanted to go by JB.
Never really got the initials thing- I get authors do it so you don't immediately know if they're a man or woman, but not for most people. Your choice though, at least until the kid is old enough to choose.

I know of a little girl AJ. Suits her.

I toyed with using MJ for my daughter as that’s what her first two initials turned out to be but it was a bit too ‘Spiderman’ for me.

Instead she gets called all sorts… Celery, Chella, Moo-Moo Meadows etc 😆
