Calling children by their initials

I don't know how common it is, but I know a few children (all boys) that are almost exclusively called by their first and middle initial (JC, JP, JJ, AJ, KD, etc.). I've always thought it was cute and said I'd do that if I ever had a boy. Our daughter's initials are going to be DJ, and I'm now thinking that I'd like to call her that mostly. Just wondering what others think of this idea. Does it work for a girl?

Hmmm, I wouldn’t do it on purpose myself but it may happen naturally. In my family there’s an RJ and it definitely suits him more than his actual name. My daughter had a JJ in her class who was named after his dad and then Junior.

I don't think I ever met the dad so don't know his name, but it would be such a coincidence if it was the same child - not sure how many primary aged children are called CeeJay - can't be that many!

I have never been called RW (maiden name) or RM to my face. Sometimes my Mum will put just R in texts or emails. I guess if it works and the person in question doesn't mind it's ok, but i would rather people just use my name.

I’ve noticed people doing this of late in the cases of both boys and girls. I don’t like it at all.

I think it’s cute when the second initial is ‘J’. A friends brother is Alexander James but always used to be called ‘A J’ which I liked.

I don't like it but if you do go for it. I think its maybe a bit dated now though? Two of my cousins have DJs, they are both in their late teens.

Yes I do agree with this, never understood the trend on mumsnet for wanting one name on the ‘birth cert’ and then a pre-chosen NN to be used all the time.

Kerry Katona has a daughter she calls DJ - that alone would put me off.

It's just a different way of giving kids a nickname. Nothing bad imo.

A bit naff IMO.

Now I have 'I'm a DJ, Alice Deejay' in my head. Not her best song.

My daughter has unintentional JJ initials and we use it regularly for her anlong with her name and other nicknames.
I love it as does she (6 years old).

I never even thought about it when my son was born or named.

He’s Thomas Joseph and other than thinking I wouldn’t call him Tom (liked Tommy) he was always a Thomas.

Until his teens when my dad called him TJ one day - and it stuck.

Everyone calls him TJ except me who calls him Thomas!

So if that’s what you want to set it as then IME it works.

I’ve always loathed initials as names. I worked in a pub once and one of the regulars had a child called TJ. But he always shouted across the pub

‘Oi Teeeej, come ‘ere’.

There is a child in my son’s class called Thomas. His parents holler T! T! T! across the playground.

People look on bemused at what his name is or whether they need him home for tea.

You can't decide a nickname in advance, it's something that happens naturally.

My nicknames from my parents have nothing to do with my actual name, and the (nick)name I go by as an adult isn't the same as the one I used as a kid either.

My sister went by DJ when she was a child. And I have friend who calls her daughter G (Georgia)
