Girls names to go with Alexander and James

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 19:49

Trying to decide which girl’s name to go for. Our boys are Alexander (Alex) and James so we tend to go for quite classic traditional names.

Middle names will be family names (Anne and possibly also Catherine)

Our favourites are:

  • Emma
  • Millie
  • Isla
  • Eve
  • Mia

Not too fussed about the popularity of some of those. I just want a nice name for our little girl. Interested in opinions and other suggestions. Thanks!

Sorry I forgot the opinions;

Emma - classic
Millie - ok
Isla - nice but very naughties (as in the decade)
Eve - like it
Mia - never really liked this but no real reason

Victoria
Charlotte
Annabel
Isobel/lla

Eloise
Penelope

Sorry I thought you were looking for suggestions!

From your list Emma is the most traditional? I mean of course Eve is too but is very popular, at least Evie and Eva definitely are. They are all pretty names though.

From your list I would go for Emma as it’s timeless in the way James or Alex is (as in: could be any age of a person right now),

What about

Elizabeth
Hannah
Abigail
Annabelle
Lydia
Louisa
Emily

To be honest suggestions and opinions are welcome :) I think Emma probably fits best with our boys names but I worry it might be seen as a bit boring.

Although I guess Alex and James could also be seen as boring and that hasn’t bothered me before.

When I was pregnant I absolutely loved Isla, then I joined a work call with a (nice!) lady called Isla and also a whole bunch of Americans who kept repeatedly calling her Izz-la. It put me right off! I turned out to have a boy so didn't matter.

Emma is my fave off your list. Would Millie be short for something?

It's a classic for a reason. :)
It's pretty, you like it and it has the same timeless vibe as your sons names. At the end of the day it's your baby and if Emma os your preferred name then thats all that matters Smile

Alex, James and Emma work well and Emma is underused at the moment. Elisabeth is another lovely option.

itsgettingweird · 13/06/2026 20:19

Harriet immediately sprang to mind.

I like all your name suggestions but Emily is the more traditional
name like James and Alexander

Chlorpool · 13/06/2026 20:19

I think Sarah is ready for a comeback.
Kezia is lovely.

Oh FFs Emma.

Emily was autocorrect but actually o really like that as well!

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 13/06/2026 20:19

Emma is lovely and timeless. A pretty name that’s not heard very often these days.

I think you and I have similar taste in names as one of your son’s names is my son’s middle name and the other was on our list.

I like all of your names but my order of liking is:-

Emma
Mia
Isla
Eve
Millie

One thing I have thought of is that both Millie and Mia are shortenings of Amelia. So you could go for Amelia and see where life takes her!

Other names I like are Amy, Emily, Sarah, Laura, Lara, Katherine / Catherine.

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 20:43

Thanks everyone, this is super helpful.

@JontyGentooey - that’s my issue with Millie. I love it for a baby and think it’s every girly and cutesy but I worry how it would sound on an adult. I’d rather have a long version like Emilia but my husband isn’t keen and prefers just Millie.

Emma goes well with Alexander and James. Eve is nice too. Not keen on Millie, Isla and Mia, they’re a bit bland and overused.

TomatoSandwiches · 13/06/2026 20:44

Sophie

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 20:44

@itsgettingweird - I really like Harriet but sadly my husband isn’t keen.

I also like Charlotte but can’t use it due to it being a close family member. I like Victoria but I don’t like the shortenings.

Do we think Emma Anne sounds ok? Anne is my mum’s name so I’d really like to use that. We may also use Catherine so could also be Emma Catherine Anne but I probably prefer just one middle name.
