Girls names to go with Alexander and James

Trying to decide which girl’s name to go for. Our boys are Alexander (Alex) and James so we tend to go for quite classic traditional names.

Middle names will be family names (Anne and possibly also Catherine)

Our favourites are:

  • Emma
  • Millie
  • Isla
  • Eve
  • Mia

Not too fussed about the popularity of some of those. I just want a nice name for our little girl. Interested in opinions and other suggestions. Thanks!

From your list I’d pick Emma because it’s a lovely underused classic name. The others are the names of most of the 10-15 year old girls in my DS’s classes!

other classic but less common names-

Genevieve
cordelia
cora
Juliet/ te
Vivienne/ vivi
Imogen
Blythe
Eleanor/Nell
Cecily
Constance/ Connie
Evelyn
Edie
Lucy
Rachel
Josie

Evelyn is really popular round us. Looking it up, it's 20th most popular name in England and Wales. More popular than Eva or Evie.

Eve is 240 so not popular as a standalone.

I agree with you about Emma.

KayEmAy · 14/06/2026 23:49

My favorite on your list is Eve, followed closely by Emma and Mia :)

other ideas:

Thea
Daisy
Belle
Gemma
Abigail
Tessa
Eden
Mae

Emma Catherine Anne

Eenameenadeeka · 15/06/2026 08:42

Id pick Emma. It's beautiful, I don't think it's boring and it's a lot less common than it used to be as well.

TopsieGreenwood · 15/06/2026 08:44

I know someone with an Alexander and Jasmine

NamingNoNames · 15/06/2026 10:24

Emma - love it.
Millie - doesn't seem a proper name
Isla - nice but a bit of its time and will date
Eve -really like it but Evie is too popular
Mia - don't like it. Boring - sounds like mere.

Evelyn - I don't like this name and she'd be Evie. I don't like Ava,Ivy or Eva either.
Emmeline - Emma is so much nicer

Suggestions: Emily or Annie

I think you are overthinking the middle name. Emma Anne Smith is fine.

LoudPlumDog · 15/06/2026 15:16

Love Millie and Eve!

Suggestions…

Ella
Lucy
Sophia
Annabel
Lois
Kate

Kate. I have a Kate and James and I think it sounds lovely. Alexander is one of my favorite boys names too .

In your list, I'd only consider Emma as a classic traditional name. DS goes to school with SO many of the other names. Definitely not a classic traditional vibe.
Julia has been around forever and isn't well used. I went to school with one about 40 years ago and haven't met another since.

Aquamarineteal · 16/06/2026 12:12

We have an Alex and DC2 would have been James if she'd been a boy.

Our girls' shortlist was:
Elizabeth (probably Lizzie)
Harriet
Isabella (Izzy)
Lucy

with Grace (grandmother's name) as a middle name.

Of your list I like Emma best.

Cocktailsandcheese · 16/06/2026 17:57

From your list I agree that Emma works best with your boys' names, but I do prefer Emily.

Loveandheights · 16/06/2026 18:01

Millicent (Millie)
Victoria (Vicky or Tor)
Constance (Connie)

Greenandyellowday · 16/06/2026 20:19

Briony - immediately occurred to me for no particular reason, after seeing Alexander and James.
Phoebe, Imogen, Charlotte.

Vaguelyclassical · 17/06/2026 18:10

A girl baby is not an accessory. Why does her name have to "go with" her brothers' names? Why can't it just be her own beautiful name? (Sorry if this comes over snarky, but I'm always mystified by these "go with" posts.)

NamingNoNames · 17/06/2026 18:21

@Vaguelyclassical , they don't have to go but it would be a bit strange to have something like Alex, James and Skylar-Mae or Alexander, James and Alexandra.

I take it to mean 'We like Alex and James. What else might we like?'.

Justmemyselfandi999 · 17/06/2026 18:29

I think you’ve got strong regal links with your name choices, might I suggest Zara as an option….

sharkstale · 17/06/2026 18:45

Eve from your list.
I love the name Evelyn.

WhispersFromFairyland · 17/06/2026 19:05

My first thought from reading the title of your post is Matilda. You could use either Millie or Mia from your list as a nickname.

Alexander, James and Matilda fit well together.
Matilda Catherine Anne is beautiful.

NamingNoNames · 18/06/2026 09:55

Matilda. You could use either Millie or Mia from your list as a nickname.
Neither are intuitive. Matilda is a less 'meh' than Mia and Millie.
