Girls names to go with Alexander and James

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 19:49

Trying to decide which girl’s name to go for. Our boys are Alexander (Alex) and James so we tend to go for quite classic traditional names.

Middle names will be family names (Anne and possibly also Catherine)

Our favourites are:

  • Emma
  • Millie
  • Isla
  • Eve
  • Mia

Not too fussed about the popularity of some of those. I just want a nice name for our little girl. Interested in opinions and other suggestions. Thanks!

Do you like Evangeline Op?

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 21:34

@Calliopespa - sadly not keen on Evangeline. Although haven’t really thought about it before. Sounds a bit too much like Evangelical to me.

We have an Eleanor Catherine.
And I knew a Millie - short for Millicent. Love that.
Love your boys names.
Laura, Rebecca, Rachel - beautiful.

HoldMyWine · 13/06/2026 21:35

Charlotte

lebin · 13/06/2026 21:36

I like both your boys names - we are both expecting a little girl and the three we agree on are Emily, Charlotte and Lucy.

I also like Lily & Isabelle but DP isn’t keen. My favourite from your list is Emma 😊

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 21:37

@Myswweetchild - I’d love to use a longer version of Millie but Millicent makes me think militant.

@lebin - good suggestions! One of them is my name but apart from that I like rhem all.

Emma. Or Ellen?

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/06/2026 21:40

What about Jessica. I know it would me two J names but its such a lovely classic that seems quite unusual these days.

Hannah could be another option too. Similar classical but more unusual atm feel

Isla and Mua feel more trendy atm rather than classical and Millie feels a bit informal in style in comparison. Eve is nice but imagine she'd get lost in the sea of Eva's. Evelyn actually feels a better fit with your boys

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 21:42

@17caterpillars1mouse - I love Evelyn but can’t convince DH sadly. Not keen on Hannah for some reason, despite having lots of lovely friends called Hannah (maybe that’s why).

That’s my worry with Eve.. just too many Evie’s and Eva’s.

Emma is lovely and a classic, not dated and currently underused. Lucy is my fave, my DD is Lucy but from reading your post just now think it might be a no go. What about Louise?

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 21:44

Hahaha @roycroppersshopper - yep Lucy is a no go. I do love the name though.. not at all biased, haha!

Louise is pretty! Maybe too similar to Lucy though.

Emmeline is a great suggestion, then you could have Emma, Emmy or Millie for short.

Excellentsausages · 13/06/2026 21:49

Emma is my favourite of your list - the others are used an awful lot these days (apart from Eve but Eva/Ava/Evelyn/Evie are used soooo much) so Emma is more interesting by comparison. And I don't think it's timid - Emma Bovary, Emma Woodhouse etc far from timid literary namesakes.

Other ideas:

Marianne
Freya (i know it's overused but still my favourite!)
Lydia
Julia
Nina
Elena
Edith
Genevieve
Francesca
Estella
Imogen
Maria
Matilda

Love Emma and think it is the most substantial name from your list and goes with the beautiful classic boys names you have.
Other names to consider:
Phoebe
Caroline (underused and due a comeback)
Mary (same)
Victoria

mathanxiety · 13/06/2026 22:07

I think Emma would go well. I'd go with Emma Catherine Anne.

I think names on a vaguely Scottish theme would be nice alongside James and Alexander.

I also think names that are classics or even traditionally royal names rather than the likes of Millie, Isla, and Mia would go well.

Suggestions:
Flora Catherine Anne
Esme Catherine Anne
Elspeth Anne Catherine
Mary Catherine Anne
Isobel Catherine Anne
Ingrid Anne Catherine

Clara Catherine Anne
Louisa Catherine Anne
Daphne Catherine Anne
Matilda Catherine Anne
Eleanor Anne Catherine

Thanks @mathanxiety, very helpful suggestions.

Emma
Elizabeth
Sophie
Rachel

Giraffehaver · 13/06/2026 22:17

Emma is the most classic or
Alice

Mary

Victoria

Helen

Louise

TheyGrewUp · 13/06/2026 22:18

I like Emma best but as mathanxiety says it needs something between it and Anne.

Could Anna work?

James, Alexander and:

Martha
Caroline
Juliet
Florence
Meriel
Charlotte
Leonora

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 13/06/2026 22:30

My favourites are
Sarah
Kathryn
Juliet
Helen
Penelope

AuContrairePubicHair · 13/06/2026 22:34

Emma, from your list.

My suggestions would be Catherine, Grace, Hannah, Frances, or Marianne.

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 22:35

Thanks everyone. Am considering Emmeline as an alternative to Emma, along with a few other suggestions.

I agree Caroline could work well- I know one who goes by Carrie, which has a similar feel to your other names but more grown up.

Emma is beautiful and classic. I wouldn't go Emma Anne though as it doesn't flow. Emma Annabel or Emma Roseanna maybe.
