Girls names to go with Alexander and James

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 19:49

Trying to decide which girl’s name to go for. Our boys are Alexander (Alex) and James so we tend to go for quite classic traditional names.

Middle names will be family names (Anne and possibly also Catherine)

Our favourites are:

  • Emma
  • Millie
  • Isla
  • Eve
  • Mia

Not too fussed about the popularity of some of those. I just want a nice name for our little girl. Interested in opinions and other suggestions. Thanks!

To be honest suggestions and opinions are welcome :) I think Emma probably fits best with our boys names but I worry it might be seen as a bit boring.

I think you are right that Emma sits best with them, but is also a bit boring. James and Alexander are classic but hold their own and Emma is just a tiny bit timid and slight in comparison.

What about Emmeline, which is so pretty, and shortens to Em etc?

ilikeeggs · 13/06/2026 20:49

I like Emma and Mia from your list.
other ideas;

Amelie
Tabitha
Evelyn
Martha
Margot
Holly
Lila
Lydia
Erin
Eliza
Molly

What about Emmeline? I have two boys with classic names and this is one of my top girls choices along with Cecily

Byron1990 · 13/06/2026 20:50

@Calliopespa cross post!

Calliopespa · 13/06/2026 20:50

You could even probably call her Millie from Emmeline. But I just think much of your list will leave you feeling disappointed down the line. They don't have the same weight as James and Alexander and suit a different vibe.

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 20:51

Emmeline is a good option, deffo worth mentioning to my DH.

I love Evelyn but sadly my DH really dislikes it.

Yes! I love it too!

Byron1990 · 13/06/2026 20:52

@Calliopespa only reason I was ever really bothered about the sex, so many gorgeous girl choices, I may get a cat and give her all the girl names

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 20:53

There are definitely lots of nicer girl options but I found choosing my son’s names so much easier! Probably because I didn’t like many!

I was going to suggest Hannah, but not with Anna as a middle name!

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 13/06/2026 20:55

Clair
Joan
Meridith
Helen

Byron1990 · 13/06/2026 20:55

I agree, choosing the boys was easy because there was only about three I loved, enjoy the choosing, I’m envious 😂

measuretwicecutonce · 13/06/2026 20:55

Eleanor
Charlotte
Alice
Victoria (Tor)

Happytaytos · 13/06/2026 20:56

Why not Catherine Anne OR Anne Catherine?

Emma is fine.

Victoria, Sophie, Emily all fit your bill.

Silverbirchleaf · 13/06/2026 20:56

I thought Florence would go nicely with your sons names.

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 20:59

Also really like Florence! Husband not convinced.. he’s fussy 😂

Alexander and James are my two favourite boys names. ❤️

Emma is definitely my favourite from your list. The others are all nice enough but not timeless in the way that your other choices are. I like Emily too, but find Emmeline too frilly (ironically, given the Pankhurst connection).

I also love Alice (though appreciate it wouldn’t work with Alex!), Anna, Elizabeth, Louisa and Rose.

TheChewdors · 13/06/2026 21:02

A few other suggestions;

Evangeline
Eloise
Lucy
Savannah
Sienna
Grace/Gracie
Violet

Of the names you've listed I think either Emma or Eve. If you're looking for other ideas, what about Rebecca, Sarah or Rachel.

ourSusie · 13/06/2026 21:03

Laura

Although I guess Alex and James could also be seen as boring and that hasn’t bothered me before.

Absolutely love both those names.

I would go with either Emma, Elizabeth or Margaret.

I also absolutely love the name Helen.

stardust1994 · 13/06/2026 21:08

I like Elizabeth but not keen on Lizzie or Beth so that sort of rules that one out.

I love girl names - and Emmeline would be fabulous on a cat!

PrincessOfPreschool · 13/06/2026 21:31

Emma - lovely
Millie - meh
Isla - no, not a classic
Eve - ok, prefer Eva
Mia - also not a classic

I think Emma is the lucky one that really goes with those boys names. I think you could also have Rebecca, Mary, Lucy, Eleanor.
