Girls names to go with Alexander and James

Trying to decide which girl’s name to go for. Our boys are Alexander (Alex) and James so we tend to go for quite classic traditional names.

Middle names will be family names (Anne and possibly also Catherine)

Our favourites are:

  • Emma
  • Millie
  • Isla
  • Eve
  • Mia

Not too fussed about the popularity of some of those. I just want a nice name for our little girl. Interested in opinions and other suggestions. Thanks!

Emma is lovely . I agree with other posters that Elizabeth is also a great fit & goes with both Catherine & Anne

Emma is the most classic or
Alice

Mary

Victoria

Helen

Louise

@Giraffehaver whilst I think Alice is a terrific name, I don't think it works with Alexander which if shortened to Alex, is too similar. Alice : Alex

Advocodo · 13/06/2026 22:49

I like Grace and Gracie when they are a baby. Quite classic I think.

I really like Emma and think Emma Ann is lovely.

@Calliopespa - sadly not keen on Evangeline. Although haven’t really thought about it before. Sounds a bit too much like Evangelical to me.

Yes it probably does sound a bit like that - though I'd never thought it before. I was just thinking of how to dress Eve/Eva up a bit as I think they are a bit ubiquitous and a bit sort of "slight" alongside your boy names.

I’ve seldom seen a list of potential baby names on MN which I like as much as this - you have lovely taste. (And if I’d had a second boy he was going to be Alexander James, so I may well be biased).

just to add a few others into the mix:

Martha
Maria
Freya

congrats on your impending arrival either way!

TheyGrewUp · 13/06/2026 23:06

I,m challenhed by Milly because so many of my grown up children's friends are: Milly, Molly, Tilly, Ellie, Holly. But what about:

Amelia

Emma goes best but they would all be fine. Based on that: Alexander, james and

Emily
eva

olivia

RVectensian · 13/06/2026 23:24

We have 2 boys with those names, and Rose for the girl

Emma goes best! Lovely name that isn't too common now
Eve is much classier than all the Eva's you hear now

Rebecca
Georgia
Genevieve
Abigail

LivingTheDreamish · 14/06/2026 01:16

Emma Catherine is lovely (I find Emma Anne a bit abrupt) but I really like Isla with your boy names.

Thatcannotberight · 14/06/2026 01:22

I really dislike Isla, it's so overused.

Emmeline Anne or Ida Catherine are more classic but have a similar vibe.

DeeperShadeOfBlu · 14/06/2026 01:23

Rebecca

AngryBeyondWords03 · 14/06/2026 01:24

Before i saw what names you liked, i thought 'Emma'

WimbleOfWombledon · 14/06/2026 01:28

From your list I’d pick Emma because it’s a lovely underused classic name. The others are the names of most of the 10-15 year old girls in my DS’s classes!

other classic but less common names-

Genevieve
cordelia
cora
Juliet/ te
Vivienne/ vivi
Imogen
Blythe
Eleanor/Nell
Cecily
Constance/ Connie
Evelyn
Edie
Lucy
Rachel
Josie
