Calliope

And I love the Arabic name Ghalia, if pronounced properly! We would have named our daughter this but DH can pronounce it perfectly (native tongue) and I make it sound like the melon.

Is it a soft ‘g’, like Giselle?

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 02/03/2026 20:52

I know a Ghislaine, and she goes by Gigi, which is an excellent nickname.

MatchingLuggage · 02/03/2026 20:55

I made a long list!

i wanted to call my daughter Minna but husband said no, which I was anticipating. She is Rose, which is my favourite name and perfect for her. Her nicknames are Peach, Posy and Ren (her initials). We liked but rejected Aira/Eira (Welsh for snow) due to it being a bad match with our surname.

I’d have chosen Eirlys for my son if he was a girl (Welsh for snowdrop, as his birthday is when they start appearing) but my husband simply responded ‘thank goodness he’s a boy’ when I mentioned this.

They're probably not so unique and unusual anymore because some of the people I am thinking of are in their twenties but I've noticed that the trend towards Irish or Welsh names has sort of crossed the channel in that traditionally Breton/Provençal/Corsican/Slightly Germanic Alsace names are more popular now in France.

Breton:

Brieuc (m)
Soizic (f)

Provençal:

Magali or Magalie (f)

Corsican. I live here so I know lots but they kind of merge into Italian, apart from slightly different spelling but the most unique one is probably:

Restituda or Restituta. Who's a local 3rd century beheaded virgin saint. For girls, obviously. If you're into that sort of thing.

Batting for Alsace:

Edwige.

(I think it's from Alsace.)

I'm just taking examples from people I've met IRL and whom I also like, so their name hasn't got bad associations for me.

There’s also names that are a bit Catalan and Basque but that's all I can think of for now.

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 02/03/2026 21:03

I wanted Brieuc but hard to pronounce for UK family.

foggyday90 · 02/03/2026 21:04

Anoushka

Raphael

Fluffy40 · 02/03/2026 21:07

I love the name Danica. I think it’s polish.

MinnietheMini · 02/03/2026 21:12

Florian for a boy, love this.

binnibonnieboo · 02/03/2026 21:22

I don't find any names beautiful, they are j just names. I like some more than others, I dislike some, but none are beautiful.

Frankly, a lot of French people get it wrong too. Bit of a headache but it really suits him. I think.

MrsPositivity1 · 02/03/2026 22:02

Vonnie for a girl. Short for Veronica

Dunglowing · 02/03/2026 22:06

Ghislaine - pronounced gil-len (sadly unlikely to be used)

Gilbert - only if pronounced Jill-bare

Giraffehaver · 02/03/2026 22:09

Well as I've just had one I'm going to say that the most beautiful is Jemima

Redheadedstepchild · 02/03/2026 22:10

Oh, I once worked waitressing with a young woman called Lorelei. That's quite a different name. Some kind of German river rhine mermaid legend attached to its origins, I believe.

We just always called her Lori until she told us. She was a bit embarrased by her name but I thought it was beautiful.

My aunt knew someone called Kyrie and I was OBSESSED with that as a teen. Pronounced kind of like Kyerry-ay.

Oh also when I worked in a call center an ancient lady called Oenone rang once and we had a nice conversation about how cool her name was. Ee-NO-nee.

Edited

Kyrie is pronounced "Kee-ree-ay" in the Bible where it means "Lord". We sang the "Kyrie Eleison...." meaning "Lord Have Mercy... etc." refrain at school. Some band called Mr. Mister also had a song with the title way back in '85.

It's the letter Ghain, and it's almost like a guttural 'r'.

Mumofgirls2017 · 03/03/2026 08:00

very subjective, but I think

seraphina
Clementine
aurelia
rosalie

sound beautiful to me

Really? I'm out of the loop with popular culture. I live in the Corsican sticks. As mentioned in my previous post, naming your baby after a 3rd century beheaded virgin saint is considered cutting edge round these parts.

Redheadedstepchild · 03/03/2026 14:18

And I really hope that this comment makes its way onto Tattle Life.
