Is Toby a dogs name?

So basically I really struggle with boys names to point where I literally don’t like any lol.
I already have an Arthur, which honestly I still don’t love but it was the only name at the time I liked enough to use, not to mention the fact that it’s became extremely popular.
I like classic, old fashioned names along the lines of George, Isaac, Henry, Theo. I do like these names but they are just too common and I would never use them.

The only name that I have come across that I would even consider is Toby. I feel it’s a classic name and not common at all in my area, BUT I seen a thread on here about it being a dogs name and now it’s completely put me off.

Does anyone have a Toby? Has anyone commented that it’s a dogs name? I know I shouldn’t care what people think but it will annoy me if someone mentions that it’s a dogs name lol.

Also does anyone have any suggestions of names with a similar vibe?? Help!

I do like Toby, but my gran had a dog called Toby and we still talk about him and his antics so I wouldn’t have used it for my son.

It’s a fabulous name!
Ignore everyone else op

My DS is a Toby , I love the name. I also know a few other Toby’s so don’t consider it a purely dogs name

Mullaghanish · 23/02/2026 19:30

Hmmmm Toby sounds woofy to me.. Theo is better though..

NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/02/2026 19:30

Toby is a good name. There are dogs called Toby but human names for pets are popular.

Hilllbillbilly · 23/02/2026 19:31

Our tortoise was called Toby.

Toby is a good name and goes well with Arthur. I don't think of it as a dog's name.

I know 3 Tobys. They are grown men not dogs and are pleasant, intelligent and good-looking.

Normandy144 · 23/02/2026 19:32

I don't think it's a dog's name. If you like it use it. Interesting though that you say George, Henry, Theo and Isaac are just too popular. I wouldn't have said that to be honest (ok maybe George) and I'd stick Toby and Arthur in that group also. If you like those other names I would rule them out.

I like it (a lot) for humans as well as dogs!
Also like Dominic & Leo - might they appeal?

I had a Toby in my class many years ago. He was a lovely child. I also knew a dog called Toby but lots of dogs and cats have human names.

PurpleFlower1983 · 23/02/2026 19:32

I don’t think it being a dog’s name should put you off.

WittyJadeStork · 23/02/2026 19:33

It’s a lovely name and I did name a lovely black lab Toby in my late teens. If you like it for a baby go for it. My son has a traditional Scottish name and on a day once by calling Hamish (not DS actual name) and this old ladies dog ran up to me. Hamish was patted by Hamish and we commented about the lovely name.

You know it’s short for Tobias, Toby is a perfectly suitable nickname.

It can be short for Tobias or a standalone name. Only one of the ones I know is a Tobias.

Scorpion84 · 23/02/2026 19:41

For me yes. But probably only because my childhood dog was called toby

Toby is a nice boys name. Tobias too.

Carousella · 23/02/2026 19:44

Our dog meets lots of pals, none of them called Toby. There are several Stanleys.

whiteroseredrose · 23/02/2026 19:44

My nephew is Toby, and so was my grandmother’s dog. She also had a dog called Max and there were loads of children with the same name.
My DD went to school with a Felix and I have another nephew called Rex.

My point is, people give their pets human names. Just go with a name that you like. (But maybe not Fido).

I had a dog called Toby, but a friend of mine called her little boy Toby, so I think it's fine for either.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 23/02/2026 19:47

I like the name Toby. I must admit that I did first come across it as my neighbour's dog's name but have since known many humans called it!
I do prefer Tobias though.
