Is Toby a dogs name?

So basically I really struggle with boys names to point where I literally don’t like any lol.
I already have an Arthur, which honestly I still don’t love but it was the only name at the time I liked enough to use, not to mention the fact that it’s became extremely popular.
I like classic, old fashioned names along the lines of George, Isaac, Henry, Theo. I do like these names but they are just too common and I would never use them.

The only name that I have come across that I would even consider is Toby. I feel it’s a classic name and not common at all in my area, BUT I seen a thread on here about it being a dogs name and now it’s completely put me off.

Does anyone have a Toby? Has anyone commented that it’s a dogs name? I know I shouldn’t care what people think but it will annoy me if someone mentions that it’s a dogs name lol.

Also does anyone have any suggestions of names with a similar vibe?? Help!

No but it’s a very wet name.

To a PP, Yestin is the Cornish form of Justin.

I Think Dance magic Dance every time I hear Toby but I did consider it briefly. I do know a dog called Toby.

If you like it use it. Just don’t dress him in a red stripe babygro!

Never knew Toby as a dog's name.
I like it. One in my son's y5 class. Also Coby in my daughter's Y2 class. I like Tobias and Tobin. Only met one Tobin and liked it straight away. He is in his 20's now.
We were thinking Jude or Miles for my oldest son. Went with something else but still like those.

I don’t think I’ve ever met a dog called Toby. Otoh, my dog is called Charlie, and nobody has ever said you can’t call your kid that.

So long as you avoid Rover and Spot, you’re fine.

I’ve got a Tobias nn Toby or Tobes.

it works for toddlers, tweens, teens, builders and bankers. It’s a very strong, traditional, not too common, and versatile boys’ name.

It also works for dogs, but then so does Teddy, Lulu, Sam and all sort of other human names. Who cares?

Great name. Also the name of DS’s pony, but that’s short for Toblerone, which is less likely to be used for a human!

Toblerone Mars
Twix Aero
Crunchie Minstrel
Malteser Lion
Kitkat Caramel

It could be a whole new trend.

Grandmas next door neighbour had a vile Jack Russell called Toby. It escaped periodically and terrorised us, including biting my dad on the ankle!

Mix56 · 26/02/2026 15:45

We had a dog called Toby, but, I also had a boyfriend called Toby when I was 15..
He was an Adonis ! Love the name !

SueKeeper · 26/02/2026 16:07

I know a human Toby who really suits it and my DD has a "dogs name," and is thrilled to meet canine versions, it's a non issue OP, unless it is literally your dogs name.

Autonomouse · 26/02/2026 22:37

I used to have a dog named Toby, it suited him and I can never hear of that name without being reminded of him.
That's not to say that you would have the same connection, and if you like that name because it's not overused and it's a good solid name, then why not?
I only knew one person IRL named Toby, and that was a young woman, which I think was an unusual choice, but there's nothing wrong with that either.

Toby great name for a boy / man
it’s used for dogs too but that’s because it’s a great name and people like to make dogs feel part of the family.

do you like Robin?

ThatMintMember · 26/02/2026 22:51

Wouldn't make me think of a dog but would make me think of Toby Carvery!

What about Rupert? Timothy? Freddie?

Those are definitely more suited to dogs!

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 01/03/2026 11:26

I've known a lot more people than dogs called Toby, in fact I'm not sure I've ever personally met a dog called Toby although I'm aware of a fictional one. I think this name has been popular enough in the last 20 years or so that people will be very familiar with it as a human name. For what it's worth, it's not one of my absolute favourites but I do like it. It probably helps that I have a lot of admiration for Toby Jones, who is unmistakeably a human!

mamaduckbone · 01/03/2026 22:07

I would never think of it as a dog’s name. It was on our shortlist for ds2 - lovely name.

rosegarden95 · 03/03/2026 17:56

No it’s not. Anyone can call their dog anything

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/03/2026 18:08

Toby is a normal and nice name. I have met a few human Tobys but never a canine Toby. If you asked if it was ok to name your child Rover or Fluffy or Fido, I might have a different answer!

Aquamarineviolet · 07/03/2026 22:50

girljulian · 23/02/2026 20:03

It’s nice!

my sister is called Lucy and has always complained that “Lucy is a dogs’ name” but I’m not sure where this comes from. Names are names.

Weeks after we named our DD Lucy, Blue Peter named their golden retriever Lucy. And David Blunkett's guide dog Lucy was in the news too, at the same time.

I didn't think that Lucy was a dog's name when DD was born, but by the time she was a year old, it definitely was!

If you like Toby, OP, then use it.

EleanorReally · 07/03/2026 22:51

i know a couple of human tobys
i dont know any dog tobys

CheeseWisely · 07/03/2026 22:53

I know two Tobys and they’re both human children (one is Tobias, the other just Toby) so it’s definitely a human rather than a dog name for me!

worcesterpear · 07/03/2026 22:59

I do think of it as a dog's name because my grandma had a dog named Toby but I am old so I am talking like 40-50 years ago. The only Tobys I come across these days are young boys so if you like it, go for it. If you want old fashioned but unusual, maybe look at biblical names.

PennyPugwash · 08/03/2026 12:15

Yes - sorry op

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/03/2026 05:57

Love the name Toby
