Is Toby a dogs name?

So basically I really struggle with boys names to point where I literally don’t like any lol.
I already have an Arthur, which honestly I still don’t love but it was the only name at the time I liked enough to use, not to mention the fact that it’s became extremely popular.
I like classic, old fashioned names along the lines of George, Isaac, Henry, Theo. I do like these names but they are just too common and I would never use them.

The only name that I have come across that I would even consider is Toby. I feel it’s a classic name and not common at all in my area, BUT I seen a thread on here about it being a dogs name and now it’s completely put me off.

Does anyone have a Toby? Has anyone commented that it’s a dogs name? I know I shouldn’t care what people think but it will annoy me if someone mentions that it’s a dogs name lol.

Also does anyone have any suggestions of names with a similar vibe?? Help!

My cousin is a Toby. I’ve always liked it. Now Jasper…. Great name for a black Labrador!

Yes Jasper IS a dog name.

Glitchymn1 · 23/02/2026 21:53

I know one dog Toby and one boy Toby.

What about Charles, Edward, Henry, William, James, Walter, Wallace, Lance?

My DS (17) is called Toby. Its a gorgeous name. We'd never met a Toby before & wanted something different as our other DS has a very popular name. BUT I remember someone asking me what his name was when he was a baby & she responded 'isn't Toby a dogs name?!' It upset me as I'd never make a comment like that!
I still think its a gorgeous name & we still know no other Tobys (dogs or boys!!) 😁

mathanxiety · 24/02/2026 01:11

I think of it as a cat name.

How about:
Arthur and Myles
Arthur and Matthew
Arthur and Sidney
Arthur and Elliott
Arthur and Louis
Arthur and Julian
Arthur and Vincent
Arthur and Thomas
Arthur and William
Arthur and Rowan
Arthur and Frederick

My parents old neighbours had a dog called Toby but I also had a work colleague whose son was called Toby.

I don't think it's that common a name for either a pet or a child.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 24/02/2026 08:37

I know 3 human Tobys under 18 and no dogs.

Humptyandhambel · 24/02/2026 09:17

I have a son called Milo, I have since known some dogs called Milo. I still love the name & it suits him - it doesn’t bother him. ❤️

Sparklinggreen · 24/02/2026 09:38

Toby is nice, but prefer Theo

as always also need to consider combination with surname

HugoThatway · 24/02/2026 09:56

I dislike Theo. I don't like the sound and it's so overused.

traveltraveltravel78 · 24/02/2026 10:09

I dislike it as a standalone name, as it does remind me of a dog.

mumlong · 24/02/2026 10:23

Toby is a sweet, classic name (not just a dog’s name at all!), and if you like that vibe you might also love Hugo, Alfred, Felix, Oscar, or Jude.

Harrietsaunt · 24/02/2026 10:24

I really like Toby for a boy, and I do know a lovely dog called Toby.

Fearlesssloth · 24/02/2026 10:34

I love “dogs names” for kids..and many names that were previously thought of as dogs names are now common children’s names - Ruby, Rosie, Daisy, Charlie, Teddy, Bella. Most people would think of my ds’s name as a dog’s name. Whenever we go to shops with cups/keyrings etc with kid’s names on, his name is never there but it’s always on the personalised toy bones for dogs! No one’s ever said it sounds like a dog’s name (even the ones who I know would say it if they thought it!) I don’t even think of Toby as a dog’s name. I think it’s really nice and know of a few kids with the name. But it’s not too common either. Go for it! Once he’s been named the name will just become associated with him and nothing else

clickthat · 24/02/2026 10:46

We choose it because the name conjures up a ruddy-faced, rowing team public school boy in my mind ❤️

Carlou · 24/02/2026 17:03

My new grandson is called Toby. He is a fab little chap and I don't feel that it is only a doggie name at all. If you like the name, use it.

Mullaghanish · 23/02/2026 19:30

Hmmmm Toby sounds woofy to me.. Theo is better though..

Theo is way too common and overused at the moment.

Toby is classic and I love it when short for Tobias.

HugoThatway · 24/02/2026 09:56

I dislike Theo. I don't like the sound and it's so overused.

I'm not fond either, but particularly not at the moment as they are a dime a dozen.

tonybennscat · 24/02/2026 18:28

I think of Toby from The West Wing. We did almost call our second dog Toby but that was only because we already had a Leo (also a West Wing character).
It’s a nice name.

AimInCup · 24/02/2026 19:15

I have 2 cats who just happen to be called Toby and Arthur after reading your OP. 😺

Yes, and people often name dogs what they would have liked to use for a child.

I do think Rex or Rover go too far, and, while I quite like Felix sans cat associations, there is the extra complication that it is a cat food as well as a cat name, and while I don't mind cats, I cannot abide the smell of cat food!

But Toby is fine. But why miss the chance to call him Tobias, Toby for short I say! I'm not sure I've ever met a dog named Tobias!

Blorengia · 24/02/2026 21:25

Toby... sometimes a shortened form of Tobias. There's a story about Tobius and the angel Raphael... How do you feel about an angel name for a boy?... Too much to live up to? ... Gabriel?
