Is Toby a dogs name?

So basically I really struggle with boys names to point where I literally don’t like any lol.
I already have an Arthur, which honestly I still don’t love but it was the only name at the time I liked enough to use, not to mention the fact that it’s became extremely popular.
I like classic, old fashioned names along the lines of George, Isaac, Henry, Theo. I do like these names but they are just too common and I would never use them.

The only name that I have come across that I would even consider is Toby. I feel it’s a classic name and not common at all in my area, BUT I seen a thread on here about it being a dogs name and now it’s completely put me off.

Does anyone have a Toby? Has anyone commented that it’s a dogs name? I know I shouldn’t care what people think but it will annoy me if someone mentions that it’s a dogs name lol.

Also does anyone have any suggestions of names with a similar vibe?? Help!

Yestin?!

It's spelt Iestyn and is Welsh.

FancyCatSlave · 23/02/2026 20:29

My cat is called Toby but I also had a horse called Arthur, so what does that matter?! Presumably you won’t rename him.

Toby is a great name. I know 2 adult ones and they don’t bark. Use it.

puppyparent · 23/02/2026 20:47

Toby was the name of our beloved family dog.

FranticFrankie · 23/02/2026 20:53

It's lovely- I would have had a Toby but DD came along!
Never known a dog called Toby and I've met lots of dogs
(Also love Oscar)

TessTickle0 · 23/02/2026 20:55

My son(11) is a toby.
I always knew I wanted to use that name,my mum had toby jugs and of course the baby labyrinth
I only know one other toby and hes human.
Never heard of it being a dogs name.(and I've worked in various kennels growing up)

Where I’m from it means penis so not in common usage for dogs or boys!

Dora33 · 23/02/2026 21:03

Yes i defintely think of Toby as a dog's name. As have heard of a fair few dogs being called that.
Tobias is a nice name as you or your child then always have the option of using Toby.

Toby is v common amongst my dcs peers -21, 22 yr olds now. Not a dogs name.

What about Tony. Or Tommy, or Tobias,

Great, my only worry was that it was a dogs name, now I’m worried about it being a name for a penis too 😂😂

I know several boys called Toby but only ever known one dog ! If you like it use it - I considered Tobias but it didn’t really go with our surname

edaj555666 · 23/02/2026 21:16

Makes me think of the demon from paranormal activity, they referred to him as Toby

Johnogroats · 23/02/2026 21:18

My cousin is a Toby. I’ve always liked it. Now Jasper…. Great name for a black Labrador!

tobee · 23/02/2026 21:24

I think Toby is a lovely name and makes me think a boy or man called that would be charming. It’s part of the reason it’s part of my username!! Although I am female.

My ds has another name that I’ve had people say is a dog’s name which I never thought of previously. It doesn’t really bother us and you could go mad trying to find a name with that was perfect with no connotations.

Lovely name, but definitely sounds like a pet name, sorry!!

BillieWiper · 23/02/2026 21:27

It was popular when I was growing up among middle class families. I wouldn't directly associate it with dogs. It's not fantastic though as it sounds a bit weedy.

Poodlelove · 23/02/2026 21:27

Tobias or Thomas ?

fruitypancake · 23/02/2026 21:40

I have a Toby , no one has ever told us it’s a dogs name , we shorten to Tobes

Orangelover · 23/02/2026 21:45

A family member had a cat called Toby. Fine feline he was too. However i am not bothered one bit and its still our front runner name for baby due in a couple of weeks if a boy. Well Tobias nn Toby.

Malinia · 23/02/2026 21:46

My cat is called Toby. It's a human name though.

sanityisamyth · 23/02/2026 21:48

Great name. Also the name of DS’s pony, but that’s short for Toblerone, which is less likely to be used for a human!

MiddleAgedButterfly · 23/02/2026 21:49

I have a dog called Toby.

Hellohelga · 23/02/2026 21:52

I like Toby. Being a dog name never stopped anyone using Millie, Tillie or Lola. Plus I have never met a dog called T.
