Is Toby a dogs name?

So basically I really struggle with boys names to point where I literally don’t like any lol.
I already have an Arthur, which honestly I still don’t love but it was the only name at the time I liked enough to use, not to mention the fact that it’s became extremely popular.
I like classic, old fashioned names along the lines of George, Isaac, Henry, Theo. I do like these names but they are just too common and I would never use them.

The only name that I have come across that I would even consider is Toby. I feel it’s a classic name and not common at all in my area, BUT I seen a thread on here about it being a dogs name and now it’s completely put me off.

Does anyone have a Toby? Has anyone commented that it’s a dogs name? I know I shouldn’t care what people think but it will annoy me if someone mentions that it’s a dogs name lol.

Also does anyone have any suggestions of names with a similar vibe?? Help!

My DS is Toby. It’s a great name ❤️ Stands out nicely from all the Albies, Alberts, Alfies, Charlies, Teddys, Leos, Theos, Arlos, Henrys, etc etc

Not met any dogs called Toby. Met lot of human and fur-babies called Teddy though.

I like it, I wouldn’t think of it as a dog’s name particularly

DH used to have a dog called Toby and our best friend has a son called Toby. Its a fine name for either a child or a dog!

BlonderThanYou · 23/02/2026 19:53

It’s a human name that some people use for dogs. Love Tobias and Rory

Brewtiful · 23/02/2026 19:53

I've never met a dog called Toby and we know a lot of dogs. I do know dogs called Max, Arlo. Reggie, Beau, Rupert, Bruno, Sam, Rio and so on.
My point being almost every male dog I meet has a human boys name, so not using a name because it might be a dog name would discount a lot of names.

As a boys name it's lovely and personally I think it goes perfectly with Arthur.

We had a dog called Toby

I’ve just remembered my nana’s Persian cat was called Toby. She took him on so no idea if this was his original name. He could open windows. Grey Persian stunning animal.

Floundering66 · 23/02/2026 19:56

The only Toby I’ve ever known was a dog, so that does sway me in that direction. However if I knew a human Toby I’m pretty sure I’d get used to it quickly. I like Max but always worry that would be seen as a dog name too!

hollytheheroic · 23/02/2026 19:56

My cat is called Toby

StasisMom · 23/02/2026 19:58

I confess I knew one canine Toby but I know three human Tobys - it’s a really nice name imo.

TheCryingTheBitchAndTheFloordrobe · 23/02/2026 19:59

I have had a Toby dog so it’ll always be a dog name to me

newdaynewchapter · 23/02/2026 20:01

I know two absolutely lovely young men called Toby!

minisoksmakehardwork · 23/02/2026 20:02

I know the cutest todddler Toby. I’ve known teenager Toby. It doesn’t immediately strike me as a dogs name. There’s also Tony Anstis, Toby Maguire and baby Toby in the Labyrinth. It’s an underused name imo.

BrassOlive · 23/02/2026 20:03

I've never met an unpleasant Toby, it's a great (human!) name

girljulian · 23/02/2026 20:03

It’s nice!

my sister is called Lucy and has always complained that “Lucy is a dogs’ name” but I’m not sure where this comes from. Names are names.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/02/2026 20:05

I only know dogs called Toby, but our cat is Louie and I know two human Louies - so I think anything goes really. I used to teach an Alfie (uni age) and he used to say when he went to eg a park or the beach he felt like everyone was shouting on him, but it was actually people calling their dogs!

ivyleafgeranium · 23/02/2026 20:05

What about Tobin? I knew one and he was lovely.

DS had a best mate called Toby. He was pretty cool! I think Tobias is a fabulous name.

Caitl995 · 23/02/2026 20:07

It feels like a dogs name but it also sounds nice for a child. Sorry maybe not helpful but there are lots of children called Bella or Max etc which are common dogs’ names and I doubt anyone cares. I like Toby, I love Tobias as someone suggested.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 23/02/2026 20:18

I have known two adult men called Toby so I don’t think of it as a dog’s name. It works well on children and adults imo.

Dog owners are causing a problem though - the increasing anthromorphisation of dogs has led to them being given more and more human names and it really is ruining some perfectly good baby names - Bella and Luna come to mind, both girls names I liked before everyone starts using the for their XL Bully,

I should add I might be a bit sensitive because I am married to an Oscar and he hated that he has a dogs name growing up - it got more popular for boys so less so now I think but it always bothered him.

Oh this is cute! I’m going to add it to my own boys list!

The only dog I’ve heard of called Toby was in the Milly-Molly-Mandy books, although judging by this thread, he’s not the only one. It’s a great name - I have a cousin Toby. Friendly and a bit different from Alfie, Charlie etc.
