There was a cardiothoracic surgeon at St Thomas’ in the 90s called Mr Death. Definitely pronounced “Deeth”, he became extremely upset if you accidentally called him Dr Death.

It's Welsh, isn't it? Like the joke, I'm wondering if his first name was Dai...

Sugargliderwombat · 12/02/2026 19:22

My mum wanted to call me charity.

Someone mentioned Nazi already.

I know a few men called Ignazi. Known as Nazi. Born after WW2.

No children with that name though.

That is where the nickname “Nazi” comes from. “Nazi” short for “Ignatius” was a stereotypical nickname for a thick racist Bavarian peasant. Kind of like calling somebody “a bit of a Darren”, or “a total Kev”.

I know someone who is called Mike Hunt.
His parents really didn't think that one through.

My brother went to uni with a Mike Hunt. He loved the name. As a student it made him very cool! They also had a Saxon Bullock. Which I think is just an awesome name. He was also a pretty cool guy

My mum was due on Valentine's Day so her parents planned to call her Valentina! I think that would have been pretty bad. Luckily she was late.

Valentina is a beautiful name and popular in Italy.

Nevaeh

Oh we have one of those in DS’s class, it’s actually fairly pretty once you overlook the fact it is Heaven spelled backwards. Nevayah.

A man called Donk.
It was short for donkey. The claim was he was hung like a donkey.
It was one of those stupid nicknames that public school boys have for each other that was still being used in adult hood.

I used to work with a beautiful Italian girl named Valentina. Some people in the office didn’t like her so would refer to her as “Val” behind her back, doubt she cared mind .

Lemondrizzle4A · 12/02/2026 19:28

Do you like your own name. I love mine. Popular in the fifties much less so now. Never taught one in 30+ years. Four letters. J**e.

A few years ago when we were looking around nurseries for our DC we say the name Fury next to one of the pegs. Can’t say I was keen!

No - he was born on a ship SS Diogenes !

That is the coolest name and the coolest reason to be be called Diogenes.

LemonAndGingerMarmalade · 12/02/2026 19:30

I taught a class that had a Brawn and an Adonis. And both boys looked like their names.

Princess, Junior, Jet & Bunny. 🙃 The mother has another child called Harvey, which was a fine name.

Of course there’s also Buddy Bear and Rocket River, their sister Petal has an alternative name but their other sisters have normal first names, pity about their middle names.

And let’s not forget Honey Kinney and Betty Kitten.

If the celebs can call their children shit names, then I guess it’s ok for us mere mortals to call our kids shit names too.

Moon unit and Dweezil ?

Malena.
For those not in the know Melena (pronounced the same( means black, tarry poo which indicate intestinal bleeding).

Malena is a very common Hispanic name. Melena, apart from what you described, means main or a person’s long hair.

I thought it was a shortened of the German "National Socialist Party" (obviously the German spelling - which I am not going to attempt)

i feel most sorry for all those women called Alexa...

You are not wrong. I have a friend named Alexa - she got stick for it in the 80s after the Joan Collins character in Dynasty and then had to put up with devices going off every time someone said her name. She has now decided "you can call me Al" - the reference to the song is intentional!
