Someone who loved Judge Dread was going to call child Dread. Thankfully was persuaded otherwise.

I know someone who called their daughter “Selfie” to which I had to double check I hadn’t misheard.

AmyDudley · 12/02/2026 19:05

I had a relative called Diogenes, which is .... unusual. He was always called Dodger as a nickname.

NotMeAtAll · 12/02/2026 19:06

My friend knew of a child called Snuggles. Her siblings had ordinary names.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 12/02/2026 19:06

Nigel Mould.

My mum was due on Valentine's Day so her parents planned to call her Valentina! I think that would have been pretty bad. Luckily she was late.

Valentina is lovely.........

Brooklyn Beckham is apparently named after where he was conceived, so...

Edited

I seem to recall some comments when he was born that he should feel lucky his parents weren't in Peckham at the time of his conception

I think that's actually an urban myth.

I don’t know… a family I went to school with had an older brother called James and a younger brother called Jamie.

Jamesblonde2 · 12/02/2026 19:08

Takeela (and lime).

Parents were fans of PG Wodehouse?

Dr De'ath

Someone told me a story of how DS1 was named Shaun (pronounced shorn) and DS2 was named Sean (pronounced seen) - thought that was awful, if more than a bit funny!

That sounds like another urban legend in the vein of La-a, tbh. I hope so, anyway!

babyproblems · 12/02/2026 19:10

I know of a ‘Storie’. Im not a fan personally. I can see some sort of reasonable for a little girl - but for a grown woman I just can’t imagine anyone taking them seriously..

Sisters. Britni & Whitni.

No?!!

Tigerbalmshark · 12/02/2026 19:12

DH wanted to give DS a normal name but spelled with no vowels. I made sure I registered the birth!

In his defence we hadn’t picked a name pre-birth and we were both very sleep deprived post-birth. It took us almost 6 weeks to find one we both liked, the vowel-less one was born of desperation.

Someone was asking about Busby on here the other day, I thought that was pretty bad. There are a couple of other infamous ones on here but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

I had a cat called Busby...

Dr De'ath

There was a cardiothoracic surgeon at St Thomas’ in the 90s called Mr Death. Definitely pronounced “Deeth”, he became extremely upset if you accidentally called him Dr Death.

SayDoWhatNow · 12/02/2026 19:14

I met a Hassan who had a brother Hasan. Nearly commited a data breach with that one.

I have a relative called Anna which is unfortunate in Arabic as it's the word "I". Lots of misunderstanding around:

  • How is Anna?
  • I'm fine.
  • No, Anna.
  • Yes.

Or:

  • What's her name?
  • I
  • No her,
  • Yes, I.

I’ve taught an Anakin, a Starr-Rise, a Kyery-Rose and a Duce.

I have heard of Twilight

I didn't think anything could be worse than calling a child Sonny, but here we have it.

Taught a Sonny. Absolutely lovely lad.

Mis-spelling of “Sylvie”? Or “Sylphide”? “Selkie”?

There’s apparently a character in Final Fantasy called “Selphie”, maybe parents were a fan.

Me too.
Not my point.

ScottishHils · 12/02/2026 19:17

Keegan, in honour of Kevin Keegan. He’s early/mid 20’s now and goes by his middle name of Kieron, after Kieron Dyer. Dad was a big Newcastle United fan.

TimeForATerf · 12/02/2026 19:18

Princess, Junior, Jet & Bunny. 🙃 The mother has another child called Harvey, which was a fine name.

Of course there’s also Buddy Bear and Rocket River, their sister Petal has an alternative name but their other sisters have normal first names, pity about their middle names.

And let’s not forget Honey Kinney and Betty Kitten.

If the celebs can call their children shit names, then I guess it’s ok for us mere mortals to call our kids shit names too.

Helpwithdivorce · 12/02/2026 19:18

Child in my kids class is called Anfield after the football ground. That’s pretty bad

That has got me thinking.
