Which unusual or old fashioned boy names would you use if you were given free rein and no negative judgement was allowed? (I’ll make another thread for girls names)

I love Tycho and Darwin.

always loved Florian, but chose Fabian instead.

Still love Florian though

my Fabian is 20 this month! Its a great name!

♥️
How lovely ! 😀

I must admit was swayed to love the name a looong time ago by a song by The Mission with the name Fabienne - which is obvs the female version - but it's lovely for a boy.

Merlin. My husband was very set on Fyfe for a while. Thankfully I convinced him otherwise

Fyfe?!?! That's bananas!

Nathaniel, Hugo, casper, Caspian, Tristan , Sebastian, Florian are very common around here. What on earth are “normal” names if these are not????

Guess it differs by region. Where i am Nathaniel, Hugo and especially Sebastian are very common. Tristan and Caspar less so but not unusual. Never met a Caspian but I could see the name fitting in. It would be very unusual to meet a Florian though. Never had a Florian in classes, playgroups, called across playgrounds etc.
I once met a female Florianne abroad, thought that was lovely.

@Elephantangel1991 Sebastian and Hugo are names that need a last name to adress the right child here, there is Sebastian N, Sebastian P and Sebby in one year, plus Hugo N and Hugo C (last name initials changed for privacy reasons). And a Nathaniel, a Caspian, a caspar, and a Florian. Big 4 form entry, but still.

My kid's name is here and I still love it, even though it was probably pregnancy hormone driven.

When you're a teacher naming kids is HARD. So I went with a name I'd never taught in 20 years. (And I never expect to come across another!)

Zitroneneis · 14/11/2025 18:53

I was bold enough to name my son a name mentioned several times on this thread. I also really like the suggestions of Caspian, Christopher and Magnus!
