Which unusual or old fashioned boy names would you use if you were given free rein and no negative judgement was allowed? (I’ll make another thread for girls names)

I love Tycho and Darwin.

Malachai

I've always liked it but there's no way we could have used it. I like how it looks written down and how it feels in my mouth to say it.
(I love 'agapanthus' for the same reason)

Malachie- common on my round-
W/C mixed race families
and the
Poshos and middle class lot too
and the evangelicals /JHW’s

Malachy (Mal) is also a common enough Irish name - he was 1st Archbishop of Armagh in 1100’s.

4 of the names we used have been mentioned already.

I liked Arkady, we have a Eastern European surname so it would have worked fine.

Inigo
Nathaniel

We went for Inigo as a middle name because we weren’t quite brave enough

goldenautumnleaves25 · 08/11/2025 06:58

Nathaniel, Hugo, casper, Caspian, Tristan , Sebastian, Florian are very common around here. What on earth are “normal” names if these are not????

chunkyBoo · 08/11/2025 07:26

Hunter
lucien
jasper
Tate

Steadfast is exactly the sort of name I came into this thread to see - it's fantastic!

Names vary by area though. Names that are common in some parts of the UK can be relatively rare in others. Those aren’t names that I hear much in my area for example other than the occasional Hugo.

HugoYorway · 08/11/2025 09:46

@Ghostofborleyrectory , how do you say Jabez? Is it Jab-ez , Jay-bez or something else?
