I’ve always loved the name Thomas but is it too much with our surname?

OP posts:

If you really like the name why not. He'll probably be called Tom so does that work for you?

TheSandgroper · 18/06/2025 10:56

I was taught by one. It worked fine.

Was at school (1960s) with the following:
Thomas Thompson
Scott Scott
Ross Ross
James James
William Williamson
Donalda Donald

I worked with someone with this exact name! His dad picked it because he "wanted him to be a famous footballer"...

SoftLass · 18/06/2025 12:23

one of my great-grandfathers was called Thomas Thomason. Much more common back in those days. So I have a soft spot for it

60andcounting · 18/06/2025 12:30

I know of a William Williams
Phillip Phillips
Billy Williams (so, obviously William)

Thomas is a lovely name.

My friend's son is called Josh,, he absolutely hates it. There's no rules.

KirstieKaren · 18/06/2025 12:57

I like the idea of Firstname ‘Tommy’ Thompson !

Dora33 · 18/06/2025 13:02

Once you don't mind him being called tomtom.

Snorlaxo · 18/06/2025 13:09

TomToms are like iPods and his contemporaries won’t have a clue.

The name is too much imo - I don’t mind alliteration like Marvel likes but not something super close like Tom Thompson which would be fine for the family pet.

FanofLeaves · 18/06/2025 13:10

I know a Dave Davids and a Richard Richards and all I can think is how little imagination their parents must have had.

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/06/2025 13:11

Yes, too much, sorry!

YesHonestly · 18/06/2025 13:13

Yes it’s too much, and really bland/boring.

There are so many other lovely names, don’t do that to your child.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 18/06/2025 13:14

bad idea

AndStand · 18/06/2025 13:15

I know a Daniel Daniels. My Dad's friend was John Johnson. Not the worst thing in the world.

bydwraigwrthymor · 18/06/2025 13:19

It's not that unusual in Wales more among older people. Evan Evans. Billy Williams. David Davies (Dai Twice).

I don't think I'd do it though.

Zebralie · 18/06/2025 13:51

This is surely a wind up 😂

Zebralie · 18/06/2025 13:51

Sounds like a tongue twister..

Olika · 18/06/2025 13:52

Please don’t

What unimaginative parents!!!?

Insertfootnote · 18/06/2025 13:53

Bad idea. I already know several Thomas Thompsons.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 18/06/2025 13:55

I like it! I think its got a nice ring to it. There's certainly far worse names out there.

SparklyGlitterballs · 18/06/2025 13:56

There was an actor called Edward Woodward. I always used to think "why would you do that" when I heard it.

HoppingPavlova · 18/06/2025 14:16

God no. Will always cause internal dialogue in others.

DanDin · 18/06/2025 14:49

It couldn't be better @glasspotato

notagainyoufool · 18/06/2025 14:59

I don’t think it’s that bad
