I’ve always loved the name Thomas but is it too much with our surname?

He'll be TomTom before he leaves primary school. Some parent will inadvertently say it in earshot of their child and it will stick.

There are so many other names, don't choose that one!

Names that are similar to Thomas in my mind are: James, Matthew, Oliver, Ethan, Benjamin - not sure why but they correlate in my mind Smile

There are worse nicknames than TomTom. I think it's quite cute.

Well it's not offensive but what if his friends are called ..

Matthew Matthews
David Davidson
Benjamin Benjamin
James Jameson
Arthur McArthur
Conor O'Connor

Thomas Thompson is equally non creative.

Thomas is handsome; you could change the surname.

sesquipedalian · 18/06/2025 08:53

OP, yes, too much!

Seeingadistance · 18/06/2025 08:54

I've known at least 2 Thomas (Tom or Tommy) Thomson, and at least one John Johnston. It's really not a big deal or endlessly hilarious.

Talltreesbythelake · 18/06/2025 09:01

It's fine. Could have a middle initial to sound more literary. Thomas D Thompson. And kids won't nickname him TomTom, that is a piece out of the Ark for youngsters nowadays. He will earn his own nickname.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 18/06/2025 09:02

That would have been like calling my DS Matthew Matthews 😅

MyKingdomForACat · 18/06/2025 09:09

Like in Blades of Glory: Mike Mikey Michaels

SortthisoutpleaseJesus · 18/06/2025 09:10

Like David Davison

I love it - both that Thomas is such a fab timeless, international name and the memorable alliteration with the surname. My DC has a similar style name - a very classic commonplace first name made more memorable as the first few letters of our surname match - think Edward Edmondson (it’s not, but that type of thing).

But then I live in Wales where there is a proud history of David Davies and William Williams type names so Thomas Thompson would be absolutely fine. I don’t know if it would be different elsewhere, but I don’t see why it would be (I have lots of English relatives/friends that have never commented on my DC’s name for example).

Of all the nicknames kids give each other, TomTom is tame, even if they did.nickname him

I dont see a problem at all

catin8oot5 · 18/06/2025 09:21

I like it!

Krakinou · 18/06/2025 09:37

You could give any other first name and still call him Tommy as a nickname. My grandad was always known by the diminutive of his surname to the extent that many friends etc could barely remember his actual first name. Think something like “Kenneth Christopher” known as “Chris”.

betsy99 · 18/06/2025 09:53

I knew a young adult called Brian O'Brien years ago, and I always wondered what his parents were thinking.

ScrewedByFunding · 18/06/2025 08:17

He'll be nicknamed TomTom.

😂😂

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 18/06/2025 10:26

It’s okay. Not particularly imaginative but there definitely is worse.

and Thomas is a great name!

SardinesOnGingerbread · 18/06/2025 10:28

Probably, but I rather like it.

teksquad · 18/06/2025 10:29

I know someone called Max Maxwell (actually Maxwell Maxwell), works for him. I quite like yours.

Evolutionarygoals · 18/06/2025 10:29

I think it used to be perfectly acceptable. I remember listening to my mum talking about our family tree with an elderly relative who'd been doing some research, and it seemed like most of my ancestors had 'double names'. All from South Wales so lots of David David, Thomas Thomas and even a Jones Jones. It is much less common nowadays though. If your hearts set on it then I guess go for it, there are worse things to be called. I'd have a really hard think about finding an alternative though.

Edited to correct some outrageous typos

Bigearringsbigsmile · 18/06/2025 10:31

Yes, way too much

Hyperion100 · 18/06/2025 10:31

Tommy Thomson. I like it. Its a "lads" name.

Hollyhobbi · 18/06/2025 10:35

I know of a Bryan O’Brien and my ex husband had a name in a similar vein. Don’t do it.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/06/2025 10:35

I used to know a Robert Robertson and a John Johnston. Both Scottish, both named after their fathers. I personally wouldn’t - your DH isn’t called Thomas, is he? It used to be really common to call first sons their father’s name but that seems to have died out a bit now.

GCDPAF · 18/06/2025 10:39

It’s much too much. Don’t do it.

BootballJoy · 18/06/2025 10:43

I like it.

DaisyChain505 · 18/06/2025 10:55

Don’t do it.
