I’ve always loved the name Thomas but is it too much with our surname?

There was a Thomas Thompson in my year at primary school. Don’t remember any issues with name calling etc but he was ALWAYS known as Thomas Thompson, never just Thomas or Tom / Tommy despite being the only Thomas in the year. I think it sounds fine but I guess I’m sort of used to it, if that makes sense?

BebbanburgIsMine · 18/06/2025 17:06

I think it’s fine,

There was a boy at my school called Angus McAngus

I know two Donald McDonalds and everyone gives that choice an eyebrow raise.

There are millions of names to choose from, literally millions. Don’t give him the same name twice!

Well that’s a clan thing, that’s different

It's a shame, as Thomas is gorgeous, but it's just too silly. It would actually be pretty cruel to give your child a name that sounds so silly as a first and last name combination.

gohomeroger1 · 18/06/2025 17:50

I know one and he is indeed called TomTom

Schoolchoicesucks · 18/06/2025 18:17

Yes

Lifestooshort71 · 18/06/2025 21:23

The latest England football manager is called Tommy Tookel in our local pub - see where the name Thomas can get you....

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 18/06/2025 22:23

TomTom is actually pretty cute

I knew of a Johnny Johnson 🤷‍♀️ seemed a bit odd at first, people get used to it quickly

My uncle was Johnny Johnston!

I also know a Tom Thompson which is fine, he's an adult so I've no idea if he was bullied.

I also know an Alexander Alexander and of course, there is the MP David Davis.

Marmalade71 · 18/06/2025 23:13

Honestly I quite like it, can't see it causing any problems

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 18/06/2025 23:30

It instantly makes me think of Richard Richard from Bottom!

StopStartStop · 18/06/2025 23:31

I like 'Thomas Thompson' and TomTom is a fabulous nickname.

LemondrizzleShark · 18/06/2025 23:32

Tom Thomson was a famous Canadian painter - the double name didn’t do him any harm.

Nobody is suggesting that it will actually do you harm, though; it's just that many people will privately think that your parents had very little imagination.

This chap was obviously a very talented and esteemed painter, BUT he also happened to have a name that many people will think sounded a bit silly.

Honestly, I always think the same if I meet somebody and learn that they have the exact same first name as their parent... I don't say anything to them, though; and I fully realise that they weren't the one who chose it.

How would you know that it didn’t do him any harm? He may have been teased mercilessly..?
I certainly would judge his parents for choosing such a silly and unimaginative name!

LoyalMember · 19/06/2025 12:24

These names are quite common, particularly here in Scotland. I know quite a few Robert Robertsons, David Davidsons, Andrew Andersons, Donald MacDonalds, Greig MacGregors, and John Johnstons

SquashedSquid · 19/06/2025 12:29

I know a Robert Roberts and a Davies Davies. Common in Wales and very traditional. I think it's fine.

To the people who are accusing parents of being unimaginative, I hope you don't insult all cultures different to your own.

ShesTheAlbatross · 19/06/2025 12:34

Don’t be silly

Jamesblonde2 · 19/06/2025 12:40

Yeah

IamEarthymama · 19/06/2025 12:44

Another South Walian here, as pp have said, it was very common amongst previous generations.
I don’t think it’s a common choice nowadays but it wouldn’t cause many comments.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 19/06/2025 13:20

I'm reminded here of the old Paul Merton joke: Magnus Magnusson is Icelandic for Robert Robinson!

Newgolddream70 · 19/06/2025 13:21

I quite like it!
