I’ve always loved the name Thomas but is it too much with our surname?

Would you give your child the first name James and then pair it with the middle name James, so his full name is James James Smith?

If you wouldn't, why would you choose a name that they already pretty much have as their surname - so James Brian Jameson?

Especially bearing in mind that most people don't use or even know your middle name in everyday life.

Tom Thomson was a famous Canadian painter - the double name didn’t do him any harm.

I was just about to post about him. Love his work (and all of the Group of Seven). I spent my childhood summers on the lake in which he died (or, at least, the lake in which his body was found - lots of mystery around his death).

It sounds old-fashioned and vaguely Welsh - I kind of like it, actually!

I know a few Huw Huws....

My ancestors are from Anglesey. They’re all Hugh Hughes, Owen Owens, Richard Richards, Robert Roberts, Evan Evans. It’s bizarre!

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 19/06/2025 13:27

No. Sounds ridiculous. (Sorry!)

macaronisaidshetlandpony · 19/06/2025 13:29

Oooh I know someone with that name! It’s rare we ever think about his full name. It’s unusual but it’s not terrible.

Borborygmus · 19/06/2025 13:29

We had a William Williamson at school, and it didn't seem to do him any harm. Though he did end up being referred to as Bill Billson

I wouldn't be able to hear the name Hugh Hughes or Huw Huws without involuntarily wanting to sing Song 2 by Blur!

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 19/06/2025 13:32

Isn't there a character called Evan Evan Evans who features in the lyrics to Rule Britannia?!

Longdarkcloud · 19/06/2025 14:11

The doubling up of names like this has occurred throughout history as anyone who has studied history and genealogy can affirm. I think it was a bit more common in the past because of the restricted number of given names in use and the need to identify family connections when surnames weren’t yet commonly in use.

nietzscheanvibe · 19/06/2025 14:13

🤣🤣🤣 YES!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 19/06/2025 14:18

I have a David Davidson at work. Which sounds bloody stupid.

Guy I knew at school called Robert Robertson was called Bob or Bobert Bobertson...😄

And a few named Sam Sam, John John and Alfie Alfie too? Surely this is a wind up?!

TurquoiseDress · 19/06/2025 16:34

Yes…Tom Tom!

Samms/Samuels and John/Johns are far from unusual surnames.

I wonder if his father is also called David? I'm not a fan of giving your child your own first name, as I think it's quite self-important and frames the child only as being your child, rather than as an individual in their own right; but if there's a long line of men called David Davidson who have all had sons called David, with the surname meaning 'son of David'... that's starting to sound quite arrogant, imho.

Harking back to the days of actual sat-nav's not google maps - He'd be nicknamed Tom-Tom. or knowing the way my brain works with nicknames - Wayze, Map, Satnav.... Dont do it!!

ButFirstCovfefe · 19/06/2025 17:13

One of the first cinema owners in England was called Thomas Thompson, I believe. His first cinema was called The Bug and Flea.

I think it’s a lovely name but (outing) that might be because he was a long ago relative 🙃

Crikeyalmighty · 19/06/2025 17:20

I love Tom and have one myself but with Thompson - no!!

anyolddinosaur · 19/06/2025 17:31

Yes. You want to call him Thomas change your surname.

glasspotato · 19/06/2025 20:10

What about Dominic? Dom Thompson still too much?

OP posts:
LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 19/06/2025 21:29

I think Dominic Thompson works and so does Dom Thompson.

Dom Tom sounds a bit weird but probably less likely to be a nickname than TomTom

Rowen32 · 19/06/2025 21:47

Still too much
