Thoughts on the name Boden (nick names Bode or Bodie)

And middle names (we like more classical middle names) or ideally a fire and earth name

2 middle names needed!

Boden Fatface

This is what my DH would have called a child called Boden when he was 9yo. The teacher would have had a chat and said "Tom, it's not like you to be unkind to other children.
Please apologise." And 9yo DH would have apologised and felt bad, and 30 years later tell his wife about the awful thing he said as a child, and his wife would piss herself laughing.

What other names do you like, OP?

Movinghouseatlast · 15/02/2025 23:09

According to Mumsnet middle names could be Edie Fairisle. It does have a certain ring.

StormingNorman · 15/02/2025 23:27

The other slightly awkward thing about naming a baby girl Boden is that a lot of the clothing has girls’ names.

When you introduce Boden Anna people won’t know if you’re talking about your baby or your cardigan.

I know someone called John Lewis (there's probably loads of them to be fair) but he's very old and almost certainly pre-dates the retail chain of the same name.

John Lewis was founded in 1864, so he'd have to be very old indeed.

Every name is spoiled by something, and shops are coming and going.
From my experience children are absolutely ok with many different names, it is always adults who voice opinions, just because they don't know something.

Do you have Scandinavian surname? If not, and you like the name in connection with it's Scandinavian roots, maybe choosing a middle name which would point to the north might make it clearer.

Middle name Lars? Can be used as Larry if the son feels more British.

You said you need two middle name - does the reason why you need two put some constrains/conditions on choosing them?

@eightIsNewNine you say that children are OK with strange names but adults voice opinions - maybe so. But you know that children become adults. So whilst no one in the year 2 class will laugh at Flopsy Bunny Smith, when Flopsy is going for job interviews she’s going to feel pretty stupid!

God, you're all in such a middle class bubble.

Believe it or not, there's many areas where people won't even have heard of Boden the shop, let alone seen one or bought anything from there.

Perhaps the OP lives somewhere like that and just thinks it's a nice name.

But it's a shame she's likely flounced because I now need to know what a 'fire and earth name is'. Magma?

Boden Magma? That's quite distinctive.

Arguably Boden is a fire and earth name, given it apparently means "soil" in German...

But I don't know what that means either. Lava? Compost?

SnowFrogJelly · 16/02/2025 00:12

Boden is a terrible choice of name

Hi! Yes I'm aware of the shop name. Thanks for your input :) I find that quite rude.

😂 Have you ever been on Mumsnet before? That was quite tame.

Please don’t call a child Boden, it’s cruel.

Maybe, but Boden isn't actively stupid name, it just coincides with a shop name. Who knows whether that specific shop will even be around in 20 years.

Boden is a name used in some parts of Europe. If it meant something ugly in English, I'd understand the hesitation, but it doesn't really differ that significantly from names like Zara or Wendy.

OonaStubbs · 16/02/2025 00:49

I think there needs to be a crackdown on child names. There needs to be an approved list of acceptable names as there is in some other countries.

rollon20again · 16/02/2025 01:01

I find that quite rude.

You'll be saying that phrase quite a lot over the years. Especially if you are based in the UK as it will be the only thing that springs to mind when folk hear his/ ( her?) name

If only. Some parents are either clueless or don't care about the damage inflicted on a child during school years with a ridiculous name. They don't think any further than liking the sound of it.

sel2223 · 16/02/2025 05:28

Gosh aren't people so rude! (Especially when hidden behind the safe anonymity of a keyboard).

It's not my personal taste but I've seen way worse on here and, my understanding is, it's the founders surname? And there is a trend right now for surnames being used as first names. It's nowhere near as bad as some people are making out.

My thoughts without opening the thread were that it's a boys name and James would go.

LBFseBrom · 16/02/2025 05:33

Primark or Primarkia would be a novel middle name. Or you could go retro: Winfield, Ladybird (for a girl), inventive with SanMichel or Seeanaye.

I hope your last name is not Freeman.

'Boden' is a name with many meanings depending on country of origin, eg dwelling or floor.

Why not choose an ordinary, classic name which will not embarrass the child?

Pipsquiggle · 16/02/2025 08:12

Genuinely, is anyone else getting a whole load of Boden ads interspersed throughout this thread? I am. I have just seen a nice jumper that I might get

KateDelRick · 16/02/2025 08:26

People think they're naming a cute baby, hence the whimsy and alternative names.
You're naming a person. Which is why classic names are so enduring.

No! I seem to be getting Clarks shoes for some reason. My phone heard me complain about my feet.

Boden Navy Sludge - has a nice ring to it.

everythingthelighttouches · 16/02/2025 17:43

Tell me OP, where did you get the idea for the name Boden from??

GrantMitchell · 16/02/2025 17:53

Boden Christmas Jumper

EcruCardigan · 16/02/2025 18:31

@LynetteScavo Mercedes was a girl's name long before the car was named after a girl.

EcruCardigan · 16/02/2025 18:37

@Bjorkdidit , there's plenty of Boden in the local TK Maxx shop.

EcruCardigan · 16/02/2025 18:42
