Persephone

My cousin just named her baby daughter 'Persephone'

What do you think. It's a bit out there. I know she wanted a long feminine and unusual name. I think it's nice but it's a bit long.

It's a bit of a mouthful. She's already calling her by the nickname 'Seph'.

In my head this is purse and phone. How is it actually pronounced?

Newsenmum · 04/12/2024 19:10

I love it and wish my DH hadn’t vetoed it. I just think of Sephy from the naughts and crosses series.

I love it ! Beautiful name. I like the shortened version too.

Moveoverdarlin · 04/12/2024 19:11

I love it. I know two little girls called Persephone.

Scutterbug · 04/12/2024 19:12

I love it. Was on my list but didn’t work with our surname.

Mearabade · 04/12/2024 19:13

That's what would put me off it a bit too.

Some one has literally already said that to my cousin.

They said

"how do you pronounce it. Is it

Percy - phone? "

Per-seff-oh-knee. I imagine a lot of people will say “Percy-phone” though. TBH, that’s how my brain reads it first, same as Hermione (Hermy-own).

OMG. I’m 48 & always read as Purse-a-phone.
Per-seff-any is actually a very beautiful name!

Onlyonekenobe · 04/12/2024 19:14

I quite like it. I especially like the NN Percy for a little girl 😍

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 04/12/2024 19:15

It often comes up on here as a popular name. But I think it's actually fucking hideous. 😱 I can't imagine giving a little girl such a ridiculous name. Seriously!

Beautiful!

She just needs to hang around people who know their Greek mythology 😀

I wouldn't choose it, but I like it for someone's else's child.
I don't mind that it's long, even though I also don't want too long name for my kid. Here where I live currently (not English speaking country), most of babies have short names and it's been hated by older generation.

My neighbours cat is called this...

Brunointhemiddle · 04/12/2024 19:16

There’s a child called Persephone in my daughters class at school, they read her name out in sharing assembly the other week and two mums were openly laughing and taking the piss out of the poor kids name !!
I think it’s one of those names that is a bit marmite.

NeedSomeComfy · 04/12/2024 19:17

Bit of a sad story related to her so I'd probably avoid it because of that. Let's hope the little one doesn't like pomegranates.

Yeah I think you'd have to be a bit brave to use it.

I don't think I would use it as I could just imagine people taking the piss

Yeah, like Vajmuffington.

I find it odd that you've started a thread to invite judgment on a name that your cousin has just used for their child.

No I haven't.

I've said both good things and bad things about it, if you go back and read.

For example I said its a beautiful name, but it's also a bit of a mouthful.
