Baby name!?

I need brutally honest opinions please because I feel like I could be delusional! Have been thinking of a baby girl names and came up with Valhalla Violet (violet being middle name). We would use Hallie for short as her first name, but we love the idea of a really strong badass name for her that can be shortened to a pretty "normal" name. We also have a dog who's registered kennel club name is Ash Amethyst so we feel like we'd love to stick with the purple middle name theme and the alliteration with both first and middle names starting with the same letter. I just want to get some outside opinions to make sure we're not mad and that our little girl won't be bullied for a crazy name!

Valhalla the Swedish word for Hell?

Moreteaandchocolate · 24/11/2024 15:23

Doesn’t Valhalla mean hall of the slain? Sorry I’m not keen. Hallie is lovely though, as is Violet for a middle name. Not sure I’d match my daughter’s name with the dog’s name though, personally!

Potentiallyplausible · 24/11/2024 15:27

Do you know what Valhalla is? How is it strong and badass? And Violet is just a weed to me.

HorribleHisTories15 · 24/11/2024 15:27

Yes @Moreteaandchocolate , the hall of the dead, the evil dead, not the 'going to heaven' dead. In Swedish you know straight away someone is talking about hell, no hesitation.

Tattletail · 24/11/2024 15:31

I don't think Valhalla is a great choice.

Have you Google what it is?

If you like Hallie just go with that? It's a name in its own right like Halle Berry.

Livvysmumhasgotitgoingon · 24/11/2024 15:33

Think there's some confusion over what Valhalla is. It's not hell at all, it's a great hall in the afterlife where fallen soldiers are celebrated and rewarded for their heroism and sacrifice. This is the meaning we intended.

I don't generally agree with discounting names because of connotations (tragic characters from literature etc).

But Valhalla???

Livvysmumhasgotitgoingon · 24/11/2024 15:34

"Belief: The Vikings believed that reaching Valhalla was the ultimate achievement of a warrior. This belief motivated them, especially before going into battle."

It's not hell, it's where heroic Vikings go to the afterlife. A bit like heaven for Norse heroes.

But no, it would be cruel to use it as a first name for a baby! A bit like naming her Heaven.

Hallie Violet is lovely, just go for that?

Andoutcomethewolves · 24/11/2024 15:39

The thing is though that many people will think it's a word for hell. And even if they don't do you really want your daughter named after the hall where slain soldiers go?

To me it's like calling a child afterlife.

Sheeparelooseagain · 24/11/2024 15:39

It's where viking warriors who died in battle went. I don't think it is a nice name for a baby. Hallie as the full name is fine.

HoHoHoliday · 24/11/2024 15:40

Just re-read that you want the double initial alliteration.

Hallie Hyacinth
Hallie Heather
Iris Indigo
Lara Lavender
Freya Fuchsia
Valentina Violet
Lucy Lilac
Megan Mauve

Yes but that belief was based on the fact that they knew they were not going to heaven. So they in effect made a hall of the slain for those deemed unworthy to go to heaven. Unless all my kids fairy tale books from there are untrue.

Just outside of Göteborg there is a Valhalla theme park. My son (10) loves it.

BoleynMemories13 · 24/11/2024 15:55

You did ask for brutally honest so I'll be just that...

You cannot do that to your child. At best it's ridiculous, at worst it's damn right cruel.

Hallie/Halle is fully acceptable as a given name. The suggestion of Hallie Heather is a great one, to suit your desire for alliteration and a purple middle name. Without the bullying potential of Valhalla.

This is my understanding of it too.

Okay, appreciate everyone's brutal honestly. Husband has now thrown Valkyrie into the ring. Val or Kiri for short??

I think you have to give your child a name which will suit whichever personality she might have, and Valhalla and Valkyrie will not suit someone who's a bit shy, a bit introverted, a bit quiet. You're projecting a lot onto your daughter by giving her names connected so directly with death and battle. I think you're imagining a feisty person, and you just don't know that she's going to be like that.

Atishooo · 24/11/2024 16:07

I think you’ve watched way too many Marvel movies.

And as a teenager she will hate you.

Lallydallydune · 24/11/2024 16:08

I like it! It's unusual and different. You could see a song female lawyer being called Valhalla.

Lallydallydune · 24/11/2024 16:09

What about some other mythical names.

Persephone?

Lallydallydune · 24/11/2024 16:10

I do like it and she could be called halle at school if she wants.

I don't think that everyone has to have the same boring name.

VeryQuaintIrene · 24/11/2024 16:11

If you're being serious, absolutely not. How about Brunhilde (v famous Valkyrie) which is an actual name?

GoldenPineapple15 · 24/11/2024 16:14

Normally I don’t comment on names , but this is a very strong no from me . Even without the meaning Valhalla is not nice sounding . It sounds harsh and angry . Please save this one for your next dog and not your child . ( Half of me is wondering if this is a wind up )

Lallydallydune · 24/11/2024 16:15

I was looking up mythical names.

What about Andromeda?

You have to say valhalla is a great ride in Blackpool pleasure park though.
