Baby name!?

I need brutally honest opinions please because I feel like I could be delusional! Have been thinking of a baby girl names and came up with Valhalla Violet (violet being middle name). We would use Hallie for short as her first name, but we love the idea of a really strong badass name for her that can be shortened to a pretty "normal" name. We also have a dog who's registered kennel club name is Ash Amethyst so we feel like we'd love to stick with the purple middle name theme and the alliteration with both first and middle names starting with the same letter. I just want to get some outside opinions to make sure we're not mad and that our little girl won't be bullied for a crazy name!

I like Violet Valhalla a lot. (But not Valhalla as a first name unless you are Vikings).

I don't know who mentioned Victory as a name, but it's great (same word as Nike, so of course it's a name, but has just been toned down to the ladylike Victoria).

So, I'd say go for it!

shetoldmeto · 24/11/2024 22:18

Ask yourself if you'd like to be called this and if not don't do it to your daughter.

TidySnail · 24/11/2024 22:19

Is it worth checking out the names of the actual Valkeries? See if there are any you like?

I always ask myself this in the baby name forum, and yes, I'd be happy to be called Violet or Victory (but not Valhalla as a first name, second name fine).

Ketzele · 24/11/2024 22:25

I think Violet Valhalla is a nice compromise.

I think the reason I'm so drawn to exciting names is because my own name is so dull and boring (even my last name is Smith which is the dullest of the dull!) and not even a blooming middle name. So I feel like in my personal situation I'd love an exhilarating and cool name like valhalla, but I suppose the grass is always greener isn't it! We've agreed we think that if we do end up using Valhalla in her name it would definitely be middle name only.

My first name was 'unusual' when I was at school in the old days (it's still not much used nowadays), and I was aware of and liked not being yet another Sarah or Sophie or Amelia, etc. I was aware of being 'different', in a good way, because of my name. I think it helped me to develop my sense of self as an adult.

Two names I have always loved from the old days, (aunt names, which are now never used), are Venetia and Sibylla.

RogueFemale · 24/11/2024 23:03

@Livvysmumhasgotitgoingon P.S. the idea of the name Victory made me look at the Mitford girls' names, as one of them was called Unity. And her second name was Valkyrie!

ARealFake · 24/11/2024 23:25

CookieMonster28 · 24/11/2024 17:50

I'm not a huge fan ... Could you swap names round and have Violet Valhalla?
Valhalla is the name of a local tattoo shop round where I live!

This is a great compromise, but Valhalla as a first name no, no, no. No judgement of character, I'm sure you're both great, but it would be cruel to name a child either of your original suggestions.

Wherethewildthingsfart · 24/11/2024 19:34

What about Vada?

Vada Violet is good

I like isolde.

I've met an Isolde, an Iseult and an Imogen.

I have an Imogen, never heard the other two but like them

If we were "look at us and our cool name types" why would we like names that are so apparently unpopular? We're simply a pair of nerds who are into norse mythology. We're not set in stone I our choices, literally just conjuring some up that we personally liked but wanted to get an outside perspective, hence why we're asking opinions before we make choices. I appreciate honest feedback but christ there's no need for being rude. People are so pressed on here 😂

"We're simply a pair of nerds who are into norse mythology"
But the problem is, the two names you've suggested are so deeply ingrained in Norse mythology, and your daughter may have absolutely no interest in Norse mythology yet will have people commenting on that for her whole life.

So often, people expecting a baby see the opportunity to bring something they are interested in into reality by turning that interest in a name and giving their new child that name. But it's your interest, it won't be your child's interest.

Give your daughter a name that will be her own identity, not an extension of your hobby.

Exactly.

We thought Livvy and Hallie sounded quite nice together

o why not call her Hallie ?

It's still a potential. We have a whole lot of potential choices that we've not shared on here. People seem to think we've chosen her name already which is simply not true, just asking opinions on the name initially stated in my op to get an idea of how it would be received that's all! We've now established it's clearly not well revived an as stated previously will not be using as her first name. All in the name of research hey 😂

LadyGAgain · 25/11/2024 00:40

Just call her Hallie. Valhalla isn't a nice sounding name. It's strong and aggressive . Not in a good way.

Livvysmumhasgotitgoingon · 24/11/2024 15:59

Okay, appreciate everyone's brutal honestly. Husband has now thrown Valkyrie into the ring. Val or Kiri for short??

Valkyrie was the middle name of Unity Mitford, the Hitler groupie who shot herself in the head when war broke out. Her sister was Diana, wife of the Blackshirt Oswald Mosley.

It's very much a name associated with Wagner, and therefore the Nazis. The Mitford parents were fellow travelers of right wing movements.

Livvysmumhasgotitgoingon · 24/11/2024 18:02

Thanks for your feed back! None of these desires are a must or set in stone, we're very much still open to exploring ideas!

Sorry you're getting a hard time here.

I love your idea of alliteration, and I love that you're considering a strong name for your daughter.

You should be aware of the association of Norse mythology with fascism though, and the cloud that hangs over the composer Wagner because of his adoption by the Nazis. Prominent names, places, and groups from his works come with a certain amount of baggage.

Have you thought about other mythologies?
Irish
Greek
Roman

BreatheAndFocus · 25/11/2024 15:11

Hallie is going through a popular phase at the moment. I’ve no idea where it’s come from and have obviously missed something, but I know 5 (yes, five!) all under 7.

Names beginning with L:

Lily
Lila
Lilah
Lydia
Leilani
Leila
Laeticia
Lesley
Lia
Leah
Lara
Lyla
Lucy
Lola

IsoldeWagner · 25/11/2024 17:23

Lily and Lola are very popular nowadays. I suspect the OP wants something slightly different.
