I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

As others have said, pets name and LOTR Hobbit (and male to boot) - so no, Pippin is unlikely to be taken seriously on an adult female.

HOWEVER imo Pip/Pippin is a super cute nickname! I’ve heard a lot of people refer to their unborn baby as Pip or Bean, so I don’t see why it couldn’t be used as a nn for any name, or you could even use it in the middle spot (like Frances Bean Cobain)

Or why not use Penelope with the nn Pip/Pippin instead of traditional Philippa. I know there is no “i” in it but I think the double P sound in Penelope makes it close enough. I would also give you/her a choice of Penny or Nell too if she wanted something different when older.

Or Apolline is a genuine French name (and imo sounds very chic) and Pip/Pippin makes sense as a diminutive for that too (as well as Polly or Lena).

Pippin is an awful name. Don't inflict it on your child

If you’re naming a rabbit, dog or horse perhaps. It’s a truly terrible name for a child.

It just makes me think of a rabbit or a mouse. A name straight out of Peter Rabbit.
It does sound too close to Philippa and she will absolutely think you’ve named your child after her.
And it definitely would not be taken seriously on job applications.
But if you like it, go for it, but I think as she gets older she will likely call herself Pippa instead.

I think you could have Emily with Pippin as the middle name. Because people don’t pay so much attention to the middle name, but it would be enough allow you to call her that as a nickname.

@Sprinklesandsprinkles no I wouldn't think that actually...with names, you usually know both the name and the derivative, and as your sister is never 'known as' Pip then nobody would really make that initial leap would they 🤷‍♀️.

Also, the people who really matter would know your child's full name (Pippin) which doesn't have any link to Philippa 🤷‍♀️

Someone I know called her (male) child Pippin and her sister is called Phillipa / Pippa.

I’ve been Pippa for 58 years with no issues at all. I’ve been to Greece too.

Is there a reason you don't want anyone to connect your daughter's name with your sister? My grandfather was a horrible, abusive man so I eliminated anything that in anyway could be connected to his name for my DC. I would hate some distant relative in 5 generations with an interest in genealogy to look at the family tree and assume that the nasty old bully had been honoured in the name of a great grandchild and assume that he was the type of person that people would want to remember so any link was a no from me.

The Olympian Pippa Funnell had to go by her full name of Phillipa Funnell (which is a terrible married name!) during the Athens Olympics due to issues with the Greek meaning of Pippa.

Nothing as strong as that, but we have our issues now we're grown ups and she wasn't happy at all for me when I had my first child (despite being over the moon for our other DS being pregnant at the same time as me). I don't feel that close to her anymore because of it so would never aim to name a child after her.

This will be our last child and I have 2 DS so that would also be unfair on other DS if I purposely named after Philippa

Why does this matter to you so much? Most people on this thread have focussed on name longevity i.e. when your daughter is no longer a small child; and very few people in your DC’s life beyond immediate family are even going to know she has an Aunt Philippa, let alone have any particular thoughts about whether they were the inspiration for the name.

If you’re worried about what immediate family might think negatively, I think the problem goes well beyond your DC’s name.

Pip in Great Expectations was Philip, people will connect Pip with Philip/Philippa

Not RTFT but have you considered Poppy? Similar & easily shortened if you want to.

It is also very close to your sister's name.

My friends has a Philippa and uses Pippa day to day so I think people may think it’s Philippa.

Pippin makes me think of that woman with the plane and her dog 🐶
