I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

Sorry, Pippin reminds me of a cats name

TheRutshireWI · 11/11/2024 15:40

Pippin is the dog who went to the sewage works on Come Outside with Aunty Mabel.

I think pippin is cute

Me too! I think we're in a minority though!

RuthW · 11/11/2024 15:42

Pippin is dog you would name after your sister.

Pippa is a baby named after your sister.

Something else is a baby not named after your sister.

Nope. It’s an apple, although I have met a couple of labradors who will answer to it…

CurlewKate · 11/11/2024 15:55

I would assume she was Phillipa after your sister. I think most people would. "Oh, that's so sweet- little baby Pippin!"

lovelydayIhave · 11/11/2024 16:00

Pippin sounds like a name for a penguin?

Mansionscoldandgrey · 11/11/2024 16:06

Polyp0 · 11/11/2024 13:19

Clearly I am the only who’s thoughts turned to Pipkins and Hartley Hare

You beat me to it!

Mansionscoldandgrey · 11/11/2024 16:08

Little Pippin can call your DM Granny Smith.

another1bitestheduck · 11/11/2024 16:16

tbh there will be so many unusual names by 2054 (not to mention more multicultural ones that 'sound' unusual to british ears even if they are very common in their country of origin) that I doubt Pippin will stand out on a job application, and if it is an issue she could just put 'Pip Jones' anyway. Lots of applications are read 'blind' by sifting teams now anyway (i.e. with things like names/ages removed, to try and counteract implicit bias/assumptions etc.

If I knew you had a sister called Philippa I would 100% assume 'Pip' was named after/in homage to her though, although I don't really see what's wrong with that unless you dislike your sister?

Why not call her something else as a first name and Pippin as a middle one? I know lots of people who go by their middle names.

WhiskersPete · 11/11/2024 16:17

Pippin? Is she going to be a Hobbit?

KnickerlessParsons · 11/11/2024 16:24

I think people forget that they're naming future adults and not just cute babies.

Pippin is an awful name for a grown woman.

cocovi · 11/11/2024 16:27

I would absolutely hate to be called Pippin.

ItGhoul · 11/11/2024 16:31

It's a cutesy little-girl/baby name which I personally think would be cringey on an adult woman. It's akin to being called Bunny or Pixie or something like that.

Your cute baby could easily grow up into a tough, assertive, ball-breaker of a woman who wants to join the Army, run a prison or head up a CID unit, you know. I would choose a name that's a bit more versatile and which doesn't immediately conjure up any specific image. This works both ways - I know someone who gave her daughter a very dramatic, gothic sort of name that makes everyone picture a dark, brooding, passionate vamp. The daughter is now a very shy, sensitive, giggly, ultra-girly 20-year-old who dresses exclusively in pastels and wants to marry Mr Darcy, and her name is an embarrassing burden to her because everyone laughs at how unsuitable it is for her.

Elseaknows · 11/11/2024 16:33

Piper is great.

Elseaknows · 11/11/2024 16:34

Pippin is a pets name

Sprinklesandsprinkles · 11/11/2024 16:37

Well I've been out, came back to all these replies and it's clear by page 2 Pippin has a been panned 😂

People suggesting Pippa- that's way closer to Philippa so a definite no go! My sister wasn't very supportive of my first pregnancy and has never been a Pip so I was definitely looking for a name that's not after her.

I am a 90s baby, love come outside and love the name Pippin 😂 I really hate some of the fashionable/popular names going around at the moment so maybe I'm having this baby in the wrong generation!

I love the name Pippin. Would assume male and short for Philip, though. I think it's great short for Philippa. I actually don't mind it as a standalone but much prefer it as a nickname for Philippa. I don't think it matters at all that it's your sister's name.

Coconutter24 · 11/11/2024 16:42

Pippin…. You’re poor baby! I think of a dog with the name pippin. It’s not even cute for a baby and for a grown up I can’t imagine they’d enjoy using their full name

I think Pippin won't be taken seriously on job applications. What about Paola, Polina as alternative?

Rescue/companion dog applications? (Auntie Mabel 😁)

Aunty Mabel and Pippin RIP.

OP you can try to convince people but everyone will just think it's after your sister.

Sprinklesandsprinkles · 11/11/2024 16:48

I never knew there was a Pippin apple! To all the people saying it's a cat's name, as someone mentioned how do you feel about all of the Felixs now going about?! And Oscars, that screams cat to me too

Needmorelego · 11/11/2024 16:48

@Sprinklesandsprinkles sorry we all put you off Pippin 🙂
As a nickname I think it's cute but unfortunately I think you are right - it's too close to your sister's name.

WildGuide · 11/11/2024 16:50

Pippin isn’t the worst name I’ve seen someone come up with on here, but it might raise some eyebrows. I think it’s broadly fine though - it bears enough of a resemblance to more traditional names that it’s unlikely to have people rolling on the floor. If you’re really worried about that you could always christen her Pippa and call her Pippin.

As for your sister being Philippa - does it matter if people think Pippin is an homage to her? You can correct people if they ask but unless you hate your sister I would suggest just not caring whether anyone thinks your baby is named for her, since it makes no difference to anything anyway.

Laalaalaand · 11/11/2024 13:01

Pippin is a male hobbit from the Lord of the rings.

It isn't really a sensible human name, even in LOTR it was a nn for a hobbit and it's male as well.
In addition everyone will think it's a tribute to your sister.

A psychoanalyst would say you are naming after your sister. You just don't know you are.
