I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

So the other name we both like is Emily. Which feels a bit boring in comparison to the (apparently universally hated) Pippin.

I'd ideally like a longer name that can be shortened with nice options for her to choose what she'd like to be. I've googled without much luck but feel free to throw me out some suggestions!

Emily is SO much nicer than Pippin, seriously!
She could be Em, Emmy, Ems even Lil or Lily for short if you wanted

Never heard Emily shortened to Lily! Shock

WiseOldPusscat · 11/11/2024 17:17

Isabella - Izzy, Bella

Eleanor - Ellie, Elle, Nellie, Nell, Nora

Beatrice - Bea, Trixie

Francesca - Fran, Franny, Chess, Chessy, Frances

Or Milly, for that matter.

And you could even give her Emily as a name & Pippin as a nickname if you wanted.

Emmeline?

Sounds like it, more unusual. Em, Emme, both good short versions.

You do seem like you are attempting to name your baby after your sister. Pippin seems like it may be a nickname for Philippa. Can you not see that..........?!

DoublePasta · 11/11/2024 17:19

I would absolutely think you had named her after your sister.

My cousin called her dd Erin and for thirty years I assumed she had called her after her sister Katherine. Then one day she put it on Facebook that she had had no idea Erin was a shortening of Katherine.

BaronessBomburst · 11/11/2024 17:20

Emmeline or Emilia if you don't want to go with Emily.

usunderthemoon · 11/11/2024 17:23

I don’t love the name but I do think it’ll be taken seriously on job applications by the time your DC grows up. I work in a school and we have so many different names that they’ll just be normal names.

ohwhatasuprise · 11/11/2024 17:29

I have a Philippa nn. Pippa/Pips/Pip/Pippin/Pipsi-cola/chicken-Pippa.

Pippin is awful. But I gather you've established that 😂

I have met a Penelope who was nn. Pip

Emily but longer- how about Emmeline? Emilia?

BeerForMyHorses · 11/11/2024 17:30

Pippin is truly awful as a 'proper name'

Cute nickname for a toddler though.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 11/11/2024 17:35

I have known a lot of horses called Pippin. Either call her Philippa and Pippin for short or call her something else!

I absolutely see that which is why I wanted to ask people's opinions on the link between them! It's the reason for the whole thread 😄 To me because my sister is only Phil that name and Pippin are completely different and separate.

Unfortunately consensus seems to be it's too close to Philippa and that's ignoring the fact that the name has been absolutely panned too!

Those saying Emeline and Emilea they're really pretty but when I've known names like that I've found it hard to remember it specifically because it's so similar to Amelia and other similar sounding names if that makes sense

We know an Emily - shortened to Emi. You could also call her Emmie as a nickname. If you like older names there is also Emmeline which you could shorten to Lena. As someone cursed with a long name I try to go shorter. Having flashbacks now to filling out exam papers and taking forever to write names on every page, wondering if legal forms have enough box space for it, learning to write it as a child etc.

twentysevendresses · 11/11/2024 17:50

I actually love Pippin 🥰 🤷‍♀️

TBH I don’t think I know many people who actually got to choose their own shortening or nickname. Nicknames are generally either chosen for you by your parents when you’re small (in which case, you could name your DD Amanda or Emily or Theodora and then choose to call her Pippin day to day: I know several people whose family call them something only tangentially related to their actual name, or a total pet name - Miranda to Millie; Lauren to Lola; Eleanor to Bambi; Collette to Tabby); or they’re given to you by your friends (hence why everyone calls my friend Simon, Cheese; and my friend Maria is universally known as Hamilton, for reasons unknown to anyone who wasn’t there when it stuck.)

ohnoDS · 11/11/2024 17:57

how about Josephine nn Pippin?

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 11/11/2024 18:00

Elizabeth has endless possible shortened versions, such as Bet or Betty or Beti.
Likewise Margaret, including Peg or Peggy.

VivianLea · 11/11/2024 18:03

Pippin is an excellent Hobbit, ignore the heavens upthread! But still not someone I'd want to name my prescious daughter after.

I second Pippa, Penelope, Philomena.

At a push, as a nickname.

Edited

I have a longer name that I very much chose the shortening of and so does my DS and he's chosen firmly what he wants to be!

Mad nicknames from friends I'm aware sadly can't be chosen by us!

@VivianLea I don't know how Penelope and Philomena can be seriously considered when Pippin is apparently such a crime 😂

@twentysevendresses thank you it's not only us then!! In relationships I see how the first post can sway the whole direction of replies and I do wonder how Pippin can be so widely hated when in my opinion there are some really horrendous popular names at the moment!

It sounds like a name from an Enid Blyton book.

twentysevendresses · 11/11/2024 18:24

@Sprinklesandsprinkles

😂 honestly I read you first post and thought 'oh that's so lovely'...then started to read the replies and was really shocked!

I'm usually really negative on name posts (because they are so 'out there' and ridiculous!) but Pippin (Pip) is just a sweet name!

I'm not understanding the hate 🤷‍♀️

It's a great name, go for it! 🥰

Thank you! You're a perfect person to ask since you like the name, would your thoughts jump to thinking I'd named her after my sister Philippa if you knew I had a sister called "Phil"?
