I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

I'm not sure I'd pick that name. The only Pip I know is a 75 year old man, short for Phillip.

lawlessland · 11/11/2024 13:02

Pippin is a nickname or pet name. In fact I know two dogs called Pippin.

thatischarming · 11/11/2024 13:03

Well you know Pip is short for Philippa and that is your sister’s name so you have to be prepared for people to mention it. What would you say?

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 11/11/2024 13:04

Yeah I'd think it was a homage to your sister's name.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 11/11/2024 13:04

Why are you more worried about people thinking you’ve named your dd after your sister than naming her after the dog from “come outside”?

Pippin is either a rubbish apple, an annoying hobbit or a fat dog from children’s tv.

if you want to call your dd Pip go with Philippa.

pinkdelight · 11/11/2024 13:05

Pippin is that dog on Come Outside. Or a hobbit. Or a musical that bombed. Please don't call a human baby Pippin regardless of sibling associations. There must be less cringe names that you both like.

Pippa as a full name might be awkward too when she goes on holiday.. Pipa is Greek slang for blow job, & pipi means pee in several languages…

I agree that Pippin’s an absolute no, though.

Greek as well? good to know. It means the same in Italian.

It seems to be a vulgar word for genitals in Polish, btw… Not a name that seems to travel well, unfortunately.

Needmorelego · 11/11/2024 13:05

@EmpressaurusKitty you can't avoid a name because it possibly means something in a country/language that the child may never go to/speak.
Pippa is a perfectly normal (pretty) name.

DramaAlpaca · 11/11/2024 13:06

Don't be daft, OP. Pippin is a dog, cat or hobbit.

TianasBayou · 11/11/2024 13:06

Pippin Reed is an iconic Lego character, the reporter sidekick of Johnny Thunder. HTH

Cosycover · 11/11/2024 13:07

But what about second breakfast?

My immediate thought sorry. Pippin is a hobbit. Don't do this 😂

Bigearringsbigsmile · 11/11/2024 13:08

Pippin is aunty's mabel's dog!
Please don't inflict it on a child

Needmorelego · 11/11/2024 13:08

@TianasBayou 😂
Most people won't think of that one. Bit obscure (unless you're an AFOL like me).

RedHelenB · 11/11/2024 13:10

Auntie Mabel amd Pippin the fog, come outside

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

NewGreenDuck · 11/11/2024 13:12

Are you naming a dog? Fine for a dog, not for a human.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 11/11/2024 13:13

You'll have some people assume you are a Lord of the Rings fan is you use Pippin.

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 11/11/2024 13:13

Might be a case of back to the drawing board 😬

My first thought: Pippin is a boy’s name (see Callie Cole’s kid on instagram! Brother to Merlin…)

Pippins are usually (boy) dogs

Pippa is short for Philippa so essentially yes you would be naming her after your sister if you went with Pippa.

It’s all just everso twee. You can do better!

SabreIsMyFave · 11/11/2024 13:13

Pippin! 😂 You're not serious are you @Sprinklesandsprinkles ???!!! PLEASE say you're joking! 😬

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 11/11/2024 13:13

When I hear Pippin I think firstly of the male hobbit in LOTR, then secondly think must be a dog!

hadenoughofplayinggames · 11/11/2024 13:15

Pippin is a dog’s name, especially for those who grew up with “Come Outside”

OliviaRodrighost · 11/11/2024 13:16

I used to be obsessed with the film Shakespeare In Love. In the film he refers to breasts as “pippins” so that will always be where my mind would go 😅😂

And her bosom.

Did I mention her bosom?

What of her bosom?

Oh, Thomas, a pair of pippins...

as round and rare as golden apples.

hadenoughofplayinggames · 11/11/2024 13:17

Can’t you give her a sensible name and then use Pippin as a nickname if you really must?

Pippa even? Wouldn’t that do if you’re set on this avenue?

Pip will also be an unhelpful name for anyone overweight.

Nothatgingerpirate · 11/11/2024 13:19

Well, she's gonna thank you one day....not.

Polyp0 · 11/11/2024 13:19

Clearly I am the only who’s thoughts turned to Pipkins and Hartley Hare
