I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

Pip is my cats name, her nicknames are Pippy, Pippy Pip, poopy Pippy, Pippifer.

Pippifer! Not sure why this has me laughing so much... please call your daughter Pippifer.... cheer the primary school teachers up.

CJsGoldfish · 11/11/2024 14:25

I've only known cats named Pippin so I personally don't think it's a bad thing if people think you named her after your sister. Is it really that big of a deal if that's the conclusion they come to when they hear the name?
I'd definitely rethink Pippy though. Or at least look up the meaning across different languages

Astrabees · 11/11/2024 14:30

Callie Coles, the influencer, has a son called Pippin which is short for Peregrine. I didn’t realised she had named him after a hobbit. I could see an adult female Pippin, very posh, maybe a KC, you need to be like that to own a name like that.

Agapornis · 11/11/2024 14:32

Pippi as in Longstocking is great. Full name Pippilotta Viktualia Rullgardina Krusmynta Efraimsdotter Långstrump.

But I was an avid Astrid Lindgren reader/60s TV show watcher, so obviously Rullgardina (roller blind) and Krusmynta (spearmint) are a great names 😁 How about Tommy, Annika, or Mr Nilsson?

roundsquares · 11/11/2024 14:36

It makes me think of the kids show in the 90s, Come Outside I think it was called? With Pippin the dog.

SingingSands · 11/11/2024 14:38

If you shout "PIPPIN!" at the playground you might get a load of dogs running towards you.

What about Pippa, Piper, or Polly?

ElBandito · 11/11/2024 14:39

Pemba · 11/11/2024 13:57

I thought of that too @ElBandito . I loved that show! Didn't Mrs and Mrs Pogle seem to have 2 children, one was their own son (presumably) and one appeared to be some sort of squirrel /chipmunk creature? Which of those was Pippin?

OP, please don't do that to your child! Actually I wouldn't name a boy Pippin either. Yes it's cute, but more suited to a pet.

The squirrel was called Tog. (Also a boys name imho).

Pippin - are you on glue?

😂😂😂😂

HarrisObviously · 11/11/2024 14:44

@Sprinklesandsprinkles
I hope your surname isn't Cox or Orange.

Silvers11 · 11/11/2024 14:45

To me Pippin is a boys name. He was a hobbit in Lord of the Rings. Pippa DOES sound like as if you got the name from your Sister's name of Phillipa. Does it actually matter if you like the name you want to give to your unborn daughter?

user2848502016 · 11/11/2024 14:47

No it won't be taken seriously! At least call her Pippa as a full name!
Also your DS is Phil and you're going to call your DD Pippin?!

LL1991 · 11/11/2024 14:47

I'm sorry but as a 90s kid Pippin just makes me think of the dog from Come Outside! Personally I think you have to consider the name on an adult - Pippin is cute on a 4 year old in a Disney princess dress but isn't going to look great on a CV or an application for a magic circle firm.
Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear.

Ohwtfnow · 11/11/2024 14:52

Pippin is a dog or an apple. I feel like this may be pregnancy hormones clouding judgement.

L0bstersLass · 11/11/2024 14:55

Elrond: "What's Pippin short for?"
Gandalf: "He's a Hobbit."

That aside, it's a boy's name.

Normallynumb · 11/11/2024 15:00

Just no, it's a dogs name!
How about Poppy?

hattie43 · 11/11/2024 15:01

Pippin is ridiculous.

Attelina · 11/11/2024 15:04

I chose the name Pippin for our cat when we rescued her and her original name was Peaches.

She now lives with my daughter and hasn't applied for any jobs that I know of so I can't advise how it would look on a job application.

Personally I would call her Pippa and have her nickname as Pippin. Or possibly Pipkins but then that takes you into Hartley Hare territory.

Westofeasttoday · 11/11/2024 15:04

L0bstersLass · 11/11/2024 14:55

Elrond: "What's Pippin short for?"
Gandalf: "He's a Hobbit."

That aside, it's a boy's name.

Exactly this - I was just going to say the same thing. All well and good to have a non-common name but Pippin is just a dog's name or a Hobbit name. And of course I wouldn't bias hiring someone on their name, but unconscious bias exists and I would seriously wonder what the parents were thinking.

Do yourself a favour and name your daughter something that won't get her confused as a boy, dog, your sister or a Hobbit character. Let alone getting teased about being one of these things because whether we like it or not, kids tease and are cruel so maybe don't give them fuel for the fire?

Jl2014 · 11/11/2024 15:05

Please not Pippin. Pippin is a hobbit. Remember you are not naming a baby. You are naming an adult. They will be stuck with this name.

LurkingFromTheShadows · 11/11/2024 15:09

Go with Philippa. It's a proper name and you can still use pippin (if you must) as a nickname.

EndlessTreadmill · 11/11/2024 15:10

Forget your sister - Pippin is a really dodgy name to give a child. She will have to spend her life explaining it, spelling it etc. Honestly it's a nightmare.
Give her a proper name, and that as a nickname if you want.

YellowAsteroid · 11/11/2024 15:19

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

Not really, and I'd assume a boy/man. It's a cute name for a baby, but for a mature 45 year old?

GiveMeTheFormula · 11/11/2024 15:28

Pippin always makes me think of Come Outside

Crumpleton · 11/11/2024 15:30

Polyp0 · 11/11/2024 13:19

Clearly I am the only who’s thoughts turned to Pipkins and Hartley Hare

My first thoughts were "oh like pippin the dog" from the TV program Come outside.

I call both my DC by the names that are on their birth certificates, so for instance if I was going to use the name Chris i'd never put the name Christopher on their birth certificate, it would just be Chris.

Just me...I've never seen the point in shortening/changing names.

DaisyChain505 · 11/11/2024 15:35

Pippin is a dogs name.
