I'm NOT naming her after my sister!

I'm wanting to get opinions on this name vs my DSs please.

We are having a baby girl and both really like the name Pippin. We'd mostly call her Pip, and have the options of Pippy or Pips. I like a name with lots of variation options that we like.

The thing making me unsure is I have a sister called Philippa and I know that a lot of people called Pip have it shortened from Philippa. I don't want people to always be asking Pip- is she Philippa named after your DS?

However DS has always been Phil and NEVER Pip so I can't decide if that makes it a non issue?

Side note- can Pippin be taken seriously on job applications etc?

@potatocakesinprogress there was one main dog that did most of the filming but my friends dog was one of two other that stood in and did other short scenes occasionally.
Useless fact of the day 😂

Pippin to me says:
(Male) hobbit, full name Peregrine
apple
(Female) character from Antonia Forest Kingscote school stories, full name Pomona

ok for an adult as long as she is going into TV production or similar

If you call her Pippi for short nobody will make fun of her because they will know she’s the strongest girl in the world 😊

I forgot Pomona Todd. I always hope she ended up a well-known musician and got her revenge on sneery Tim Keith. (I mean, it’s not that utterly hilarious that she and her cello are similar in shape, is it?)

I love Pippin for a three year old girl. For a forty year old tax lawyer not so much. It's one of those names that sounds cute but doesn't grow with its owner because there's nowhere for it to go. Whereas Pippa can be Pippin whilst small, Pip as a teenager and then Pippa as an adult.

leia24 · 11/11/2024 13:36

Surely you aren't for real? You can't call a baby Pippin

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 11/11/2024 13:36

On the offchance that this isn't a wind-up - please, please don't do that to your poor daughter.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 11/11/2024 13:37

Call her Apple.

Pippa as a full name might be awkward too when she goes on holiday.. Pipa is Greek slang for blow job, & pipi means pee in several languages…

I agree that Pippin’s an absolute no, though.

It’s fuck in my language..

Pippin? Like the apple?

If you want people to snigger at your daughter for her whole life, go right ahead.............

ElBandito · 11/11/2024 13:40

I'm a lot older than some here and thought immediately of Pogle's Wood. Pippin was a boy in that too.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 11/11/2024 13:40

Pippin!
So cute... like a toy donkey or cartoon apple.

Exactly. GREAT name for a toy donkey, or a chihuahua, or a cartoon character. Not a child FFS! Hmm

WiseOldPusscat · 11/11/2024 13:43

Pip is my cats name, her nicknames are Pippy, Pippy Pip, poopy Pippy, Pippifer.

WaneyEdge · 11/11/2024 13:44

It’s the name of DBs dog so it’s a no from me.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 11/11/2024 13:49

Pippin is a pony, Enid Blyton isn't it?

Pippa is fine, I have a sister called Pippa and it's a nice name. People do assume it is shortened from Philippa though, you won't be able to avoid that...my parents had liked Philippa but figured it would always get shortened so went for Pippa.

eggandonion · 11/11/2024 13:49

Did Auntie Mabel not notice her dog sometimes being a bit different?
I don't know why it's any different from Robin as a name...although I don't know any canine Robins.

TallulahBetty · 11/11/2024 13:56

Pippin is an elf in an Enid Blyton book.

I'm a lot older than some here and thought immediately of Pogle's Wood. Pippin was a boy in that too.

I thought of that too @ElBandito . I loved that show! Didn't Mrs and Mrs Pogle seem to have 2 children, one was their own son (presumably) and one appeared to be some sort of squirrel /chipmunk creature? Which of those was Pippin?

OP, please don't do that to your child! Actually I wouldn't name a boy Pippin either. Yes it's cute, but more suited to a pet.

Chocolatesnowman2 · 11/11/2024 13:59

That's the dogs name from the childrens TV programme..come outside.
Pippin is a dog's name
Pippa is a nicer name for a little girl .
Yes sounds like your sister's name .
You definitely need a re think

ComtesseDeSpair · 11/11/2024 13:59

I think once you meet the actual person, their name is just their name. Pippin isn’t rude or offensive, it doesn’t have negative connotations. And let’s face it, anyone who can remember Auntie Mabel isn’t terribly likely to be reviewing Pippin’s CV in approximately 22 years’ time. (And even if they are, what of it? I interviewed a Felix recently, and managed not to spend the entire hour thinking “LOL, your parents named you after cat food.”)

peacejoypancakes · 11/11/2024 14:00

Pippin is terrible. Any variant of Pip will 100% be assumed to be after your sister though so just pick a completely different name if you don’t want that.

TinyGingerCat · 11/11/2024 14:02

It's a type of apple, a shortened form of Peregrine and the dog that belonged to Aunty Mabel.

usernother · 11/11/2024 14:04

Pippin won't be taken seriously anywhere. People will laugh at her behind her back.

IDontDrinkTea · 11/11/2024 14:05

Look up, look down, look all around. Up in the air or on the ground. Come for a walk, come for a ride, there’s so much to see, so come outsiiiiideeee….

Better for people to think you’ve named your child after your sister rather than a fictional dog IMO

FlibbertyGibbitt · 11/11/2024 14:08

Call your baby what you want and don’t tell anyone what you’re thinking of until they’re born as no one will comment then !
