I named my son Oscar, but I regretted shortly after learning the people's opinions of this name online as some people associate it with Oscar Mayer Wieners, Oscar the Grouch, the fish breed and the award, I am in UK and my son is 4 months old now, will my son be teased at school on any of this associations? I am very worried about this, if I change his name before he turns 1, does he need to declare his original name in future? Any problems for him to use the amended birth certificate? I am so depressed. Do you think do a name change is the best solution? If So, any name you could recommend? I am afraid I would make another mistake, please help:

I’ve never heard of anything like this. His name is fine, you’re way overthinking it. Why would the American hot dog brand pop into the head of a Brit?!

SoupDragon · 25/03/2024 14:25

There are plenty of Oscar's in the UK. He will be fine.

Oscar is a fine name, I wouldn't change it if I were you.

It's a top ten boy's name in the UK, @ByLovingRoseSloth . He's unlikely to get teased about his first name.

Are you worrying about the name? If you think you are, please speak with your GP as it might be a symptom of PND.

How are people associating a baby in the uk with an American sausage brand? Oscar the grouch is an 80s kids reference and the Oscars? Really? Nobody will pick on your son for those reasons!

Oscar is an entirely normal name and no kid in his school will be bullying him because of any of the references you mentioned.

How about the fish breed, will he be teased about this?

Yes relentlessly.

Not really. No one will give a fuck. Never heard of it myself.

Oscar is a really normal name, there are plenty of them around. Never heard of any of them getting teased for any of the reasons you mention. Ignore crazy people chatting nonsense online about the name, and be confident you have made the right choice for you.

Change his name to Zander or Colin or Tuna.

Seriously there are way worse names. I think Oscar is quite nice. Really don’t think it will draw any comments negative or otherwise. I wouldn’t change it. It’s a faff for passports and dbs checks

How odd. Nobody says ‘what about the car lifter’ for a Jack or ‘what about the stain’ for a Mark. Most names have some association or other meaning.
Oscar is great and entirely unremarkable

I had no idea Oscar was a breed of fish, every day’s a school day! They don’t even sell the sausages in the UK do they? I wouldn’t ever think that even though it was the name of our local school when we lived in the US! As for The Oscars, no one thinks that upon meeting an Oscar and it’s not a negative association anyway. See also girls called Emmy. It’s a nice name.

Oscar is a great name, don’t second guess yourself! My nephew is Oscar and a pretty cool teenager. People can be pretty unkind about names. Just read some of the comments on here. Take no notice.

Are you doing ok in yourself? You sound quite upset. Are you feeling overwhelmed in general? Do you think that you could be overthinking this because maybe you are exhausted or possible PND? Or am I reading too much into your post?

Are you OK OP? Fixating on name can be a sign of PND. Have you spoken to your Health Visitor?

Oscar is such a normal name and likely there will be others in the school, so he won’t get bullied for his name. And even if he was the only one in school, those are such odd associations, kids won’t think of that. You could think of a negative association for every name going if you wanted to!

And yes I do agree with this. Hope you’re okay op.

Oscar is a perfectly normal nice name.
I don't understand the fish reference. The other references are not well known in the UK.
The Oscars - as in the film awards - are allegedly so called because an actress said the statue looked like her Uncle Oscar so they are named after a person if you think of it that way.
Seriously - it's a really normal name. No one will think anything about it other than "nice name" 🙂

Honestly I have never heard of any of the Oscars you've listed or the fish breed! There are Oscars in my daughter's class and my son's class and there's been no teasing whatsoever. It's a popular name and I really can't see that your son will be teased about it. I love the name Oscar.
Whatever name you choose there will be associations. You can drive yourself mad overthinking it. Fred is a popular name where I live but no one's being teased because of Fred West or Fred Perry. The name Rose is popular but no one is teased because of Rose West. Stop worrying, it's a lovely name.
I challenge you to find a name with no associations!!

Thank you, I don't think I have a PND, I am not a person who easily get depressed, only because of this name, I just can's figure out why this name has so many associations while it is still popular? If people make joke about this name e.g. the grouch, in the meantime, so many people are still using it? I am not sure who should I listen. Sorry I just can't get over it.
