I named my son Oscar, but I regretted shortly after learning the people's opinions of this name online as some people associate it with Oscar Mayer Wieners, Oscar the Grouch, the fish breed and the award, I am in UK and my son is 4 months old now, will my son be teased at school on any of this associations? I am very worried about this, if I change his name before he turns 1, does he need to declare his original name in future? Any problems for him to use the amended birth certificate? I am so depressed. Do you think do a name change is the best solution? If So, any name you could recommend? I am afraid I would make another mistake, please help:

Thank you, I don't think I have a PND, I am not a person who easily get depressed, only because of this name, I just can's figure out why this name has so many associations while it is still popular? If people make joke about this name e.g. the grouch, in the meantime, so many people are still using it? I am not sure who should I listen. Sorry I just can't get over it.

Well you’re going to have to get over it for the sake of your son. You’ve been told multiple times that what you’re claiming the name will be compared to is crazy and untrue. No point in making a post if you’re not going to take any advice that other posters are giving you on board.

Post natal anxiety and depression can happen to everyone. I do think you should talk to your gp.

yikesanotherbooboo · 25/03/2024 14:54

In the UK , Oscar is a frequently used name without negative connotations. Don't give it another thought . It's a fine name on this basis added to which it is easy to spell and pronounce. If you are still fretting, as per pps it could be because you have some post natal anxiety in which case look after yourself and ask for help.

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/03/2024 14:56

Oscar is a lovely name.

Tell anyone who says something unkind that they’re being a dick and to shut their mouth.

bobby81 · 25/03/2024 14:59

I know a couple of boys called Oscar, its a lovely name. I have never heard of any of the associations you mentioned!
I'm sure he won't be picked on, it's a very normal name.
I honestly think you should get help for your anxiety though, you really are over thinking this. Please don't let it spoil this time with your baby. In a few years time you'll look back & wonder why you were worrying.
I say all this as an anxious, overthinker myself. It's horrible & you have my sympathy. Enjoy your lovely baby.

ByLovingRoseSloth · 25/03/2024 15:02

I learnt those associations in Reddit, maybe Sesame Street is still popular in the US, but no longer popular in the UK, it is my problem that I think too much.

@ByLovingRoseSloth , get off Reddit.

You could tease a kid about many names if you chose to (e.g. Isabel necessary on a bicycle, Duncan Biscuit). As a parent, you can teach your child to not react badly to any teasing.

When a name is very popular, a bully won't dare tease about the name because there will be lots of Oscars or siblings of Oscar who will gang up against him or her.

fightingthedogforadonut · 25/03/2024 15:17

You'll be fine Op. My friend's son is Oscar - he's 10. I don't think anyone has ever passed comment on his name. It's a very common name in the U.K. atm.

Blobfishy · 25/03/2024 15:19

I'd like to start off by saying, Oscar is a lovely name. I have a family member with that name too! As far as I know, no issues for him.

Secondly, I changed my baby son's name. He was 6 months when we started to call him the name. If you change it before 12 months, he will have no issues with having to use his old name for anything, as the new name will be his new official birth name. It isn't like deed poll, where they have to declare previous names. The only negative is that both his old name and new name will be on the birth certificate. It has irritated me a bit, but mostly I'm over it. I couldn't live with the regret so I'm still very glad we made the change (18 months later!). I was torn over the 2 names during pregnancy so it was something that had been on my mind for a long time!

Your problem is going on Reddit in the first place.

Get off Reddit. I didn’t even think of Sesame Street despite living in the states until my youngest was nearly 4, it’s not as popular as it was I don’t think.

WaltzingWaters · 25/03/2024 15:49

I looked after a lovely boy called Oscar for years and never heard any negative associations towards it. I’ve never heard of an Oscar fish! And wouldn’t think of any of those other associations with the name. It’s a lovely and perfectly normal name.

KnitnNatterAuntie · 25/03/2024 15:54

My DN is named Oscar . . . he's secondary school age. I have NEVER heard of any of those associations in connection with his name

I think you would be very hard pushed to find a name that doesn't have some other association

Jack . . . . the Ripper
Thomas . . . . the Tank Engine
William . . . . Willy Wonka
Henry . . . . Horrible Henry

They are all popular names!

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/03/2024 16:11

Oscar is a fantastic name and I know several, of various ages, none of whom are teased for their name.

Thank you, my husband and I both love this name and think it sounds great, and thank you for your information about changing name within 12 months. I probably will not change the name after learning that this name is also lovely by most of the people here, also because Oscar is our No1 choice, I can't and don't really want to find another name to replace it. My friend changed her daughter's name and she said the birth certificate is just a footnote, once you registered her for everything at the first time, we wont need to pull out the birth certificate very often as at most of the time passport and driving licence are sufficient. She got no issues on using amended birth certificate, she used it to apply the nursery and passport for her daughter.

Yes, exactly🙌! All boy names have more or less negative associations which I never knew before, I have been searching for a long time.

I often wonder how many Harry Potter's were born before J K Rowling put pen to paper . . . . even if you do find a name that doesn't have any negative points at the moment, you never know what may change in the future!

FayCarew · 25/03/2024 17:02

Several, I expect. Harry was a top 20 name before the book came out. It was fairly unusual before Harry brother of William was born in 1984.

As far as I know, long names are safer, I wish human names could be copyrighted and no gender-neutral names, as boys might be quite embarrassed to have a girl's name and share a same first name in the same class. Boys have much lesser name choices compared with girls. There were no issues when I named my daughter. I am struggling to get everything done perfectly, it is my responsibility, if I think it is failed I would be really frustrated and depressed.

Thank you, my little daughter does not like Oliver, because she does not like Olive, this what she told me when naming my son.

How about the fish breed, will he be teased about this?

No, but to be on the safe side never dress him as a fish for a fancy dress day.

And it could be worse, you could have had a daughter and called her
Wanda

I don't mind the popularity, I will think other people also love this name then they named their sons, I will be happy if I see more boys named Oscar in his class.
