I named my son Oscar, but I regretted shortly after learning the people's opinions of this name online as some people associate it with Oscar Mayer Wieners, Oscar the Grouch, the fish breed and the award, I am in UK and my son is 4 months old now, will my son be teased at school on any of this associations? I am very worried about this, if I change his name before he turns 1, does he need to declare his original name in future? Any problems for him to use the amended birth certificate? I am so depressed. Do you think do a name change is the best solution? If So, any name you could recommend? I am afraid I would make another mistake, please help:

Seriously..... there's a type of fish called Oscar 🤔
I have never ever heard of this fish.

ScierraDoll · 25/03/2024 17:36

Good god almighty - its a name. A proper name. A name that people have.
Do you find yourself worrying about lots of things? Have to tried doing something to distract you from these thoughts?
Perhaps you could read a book or sew some bits of cloth together then unpick them and start again. What about pouring salt on your worktops then trying to get it back in the salt cellar.
Anything really to occupy your mind.

It is a type of tropical fish in US, but I think you'd need to be really into fish to know. Oscar is well known Human's name from the beginning.

Tbh I knew there was an Oscar fish, and I'm not into fish in any way, but it's not something I've ever thought of with my Nephew (he's an Oscar!). There will be associations with most names though- whether it's linked to animals, actors, crimes, bad weather (my name has been used to name a hurricane in the past.. perhaps you can guess!).

Needmorelego · 25/03/2024 18:08

@ByLovingRoseSloth I think the amount of the UK population that has actually heard of an Oscar fish is probably about 1% 🙂
Don't even give it a thought.
Enjoy your little Oscar.
It's a good name.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 25/03/2024 18:14

Oscar is a lovely name and I've never heard of any of those connections.

Swoopy · 25/03/2024 18:19

It’s a very nice name and totally normal. Second PP suggesting that you might be a bit anxious or depressed if you’re fixating on this.

I think once you think about any name you can come up with lots of associations eg Ben, what about Ben Hur, Uncle Ben’s rice, Bill and Ben, the charity Ben, the Michael Jackson song Ben, the tv show Mr Ben, Ben(d) it like Beckham etc etc.

Love to hear this, you mean I got nothing to do😂so I think about these? honestly do you think these are unnecessary to think about? I have been in a bad mood for 3 months. I will be working from home from next week, hope this will distract myself from these thoughts...

Honestly the more you post OP the more it does indeed sound like PND. I would be looking to speak to someone about your mental health ASAP.

I teach lots of oscars. No teasing. Perfectly normal name.

DontGiveADuck · 25/03/2024 18:28

I know loads of Oscar’s. Two of my friends have Oscar’s. I’ve never heard any teasing ever.

I don’t even know the references you’re talking about apart from Oscar the Grouch.

LemonJuice92 · 25/03/2024 20:37

Oscar is a nice name and is very popular, I do not think it is a name he will get teased about at all!

I agree with all the PP’s about PND. Please go to your GP and talk to them 🤍 I appreciate you said you’re not someone who gets depressed - that was also what I said and I suffered terribly with it (in silence for a long time I might add which definitely didn't help). It can affect anyone!

DrJoanAllenby · 25/03/2024 20:40

Oscar has to be one of the most innocuous names possible!

Your thoughts are disordered and your anxiety is misplaced.

Please see your GP as it's quite alarming dow you to have those very strange thoughts and ideas about your sons perfectly normal name.

You’ve been in a bad mood for 3 months aka you’ve got PND.

chattyness · 25/03/2024 20:44

I think it's a lovely strong name, think of the Oscar academy awards & the golden Oscar statue standing tall & proud, there's a positive image for you and his future friends will likely shorten it to Ozzie/Ozzy/Oz which are all really cute too

I think PND should be a type of depression without any reason, but my depression is caused by name, all I need to find out is that if it is really need to be worried about or not or if I need to take action to solve the problem or not. I think you all have answered my questions. I feel much better now. I don't think I need any treatment to make me feel better.

Honestly OP, it's a lovely name - not one negative association for me. Enjoy your son. Be happy and never give this headspace again :)

Thank you, I shouldn't always think about the downside.

@ByLovingRoseSloth , you don't seem to want to change the name, and you say both you and your DH love it.

Accept that you can change the name, and deal with it.

There is nothing at all wrong with the name and most in the UK won't know about the associations you have mentioned.

You have been like this since a few weeks after your son was born. Speak to a medical person. It sounds like PND.

I was thinking to change it because I learnt those associations, I was looking for other names for a long time, but I like this name a lot, this made me gone back and forth, now I think I made a right decision.

His name is lovely

okaythenright · 25/03/2024 21:55

I have an Oscar, it's the best name!

He is Oz, Ozzy, Ozzy-pops

He lives his name too!

Dmsandfloatydress · 25/03/2024 21:59

I think it's in the top 10 baby boy names in the UK. It's the James or Alexander of his generation. Utterly bog standard, couple in every class boys name. Sounds like PND to me as its irrational worrying. It's not like you've named him Vladimir or Osama is it?

toddlermam · 25/03/2024 22:03

Never heard of any of that Confused Oscar is a fairly popular name, wouldn't be worried at all if I was you
