I met a Dory once (not a short version of anything) and I thought it was actually lovely! I'd never heard it other than the forgetful fish.

sharptoothlemonshark · 19/01/2024 12:24

My own contributions to the thread are not one offs, as I have had some strange one offs pass through my classes, but I don't want anyone to be identifiable - these are names I have had more than one of, and some are common in their own language but cause comment in English

Me
Magnificent ( known as Maggy)
Uu
Shitta
Telly
Butch

Well I assume that's where they got it.

I met a child called La-a. With that spelling. Pronounced Ladasha.

I kid you not - this was in a professional capacity and that was how her name was written on her records.

I still can't quite believe it!

No you didn't.

It’s just a bit of fun. Not a criticism of anyone’s choices or culture. I’m sure Dave is probably a random name somewhere in the world and if so I welcome the comment for a bit of light hearted ness.

Well one of the first replies was a racist trope….

The hardest name to manage with in an English speaking country that I have come across is "Me" ( pronounced "me"! exactly like the English word)

Chypre · 19/01/2024 12:26

Oooooh I remembered a Vietnamese guy named Long. It is very common name and means "dragon" or similar. Ironically, he wasn't tall at all.

Girlking · 19/01/2024 12:27

I once had a neighbour called Loveday

Great report on the difficulties of families trying to put their kids through education in West Africa a few years ago on BBC. Two young men were called Persevere and Scholastic.

I met a perseverance once and thought it was a stunning name!

Jersey Girl (can't remember if it was hyphenated or not). Definitely her official name as I was the teacher.

I heard a mum shouting for her toddler son some years ago, he was called Raven. Stopped me in my tracks!

Work in a secondary school and we've had:
Vox
Pen
Beau
Jewel

Full names not abbreviated....probably more unusual rather than random really.

I'm not correcting you but thought you might be interested to know that Beau isn't an unusual name at all. It's actually quite a popular name (just outside the top 100) for boys. Some people even use it for girls too but it's less popular, obviously.

I once had a neighbour called Loveday

That used to be quite a common name in the 18thC. It's quite nice.

Maireas · 19/01/2024 12:31

I taught a girl called Beaux and a girl called Tuesday.

Lucky. A boy.

Unfortunate moniker when things go wrong in life. Imagine the ridicule should they befall a terrible accident.

but lots of names mean Lucky, just in a different language - like Felix, Felicity, etc

SolanaLlama · 19/01/2024 12:33

Arugula

I think it’s ok to highlight racism. However if you are happy to ignore it that’s your choice but equally you are free to scroll past my posts…
