There is a Dash in DS1’s school

and we briefly had a Saphic in DS2’s nursery, which was the parents attempt to do a you-neeq ’Sapphire’ but clearly had absolutely no idea what they had actually done
I feel really sorry for what that poor child is going to encounter in later life

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/01/2024 12:18

Rocky (not a nickname)

Needamagicfairy · 19/01/2024 12:18

Ocean-tigerlilly who parents insisted on the full name every time.
Leonidas

Also Ladybird! I was waiting for a train about 15 years ago and a woman was telling her daughter off for messing about. The daughter's name was Ladybird.
I've heard Pocahontas shouted across a playground too, and my neighbour a few years ago had a grandson called Saracen.

Like from the old gladiators show on the 90’s. I had the biggest crush on him 🤣

I met a child called La-a. With that spelling. Pronounced Ladasha.

I kid you not - this was in a professional capacity and that was how her name was written on her records.

I still can't quite believe it!

Research was made into birth records when this first started doing the rounds and was proven to be untrue.

Someone is having you on or you are continuing the urban myth.

Chypre · 19/01/2024 12:19

Leonidas is common in Lithuania though...

Tara Palmer-Tompkinson’s sister is called Santa

she is a very established author

DarkestBeforeDawn · 19/01/2024 12:19

Not a nickname, genuinely called Sparkle.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/01/2024 12:19

Prince Albert. I wish I was joking!

PickledScrump · 19/01/2024 12:19

The most unusual ones I’ve met have been
Zion
Draven
Precious
Algernon
Dixie
Spike

I can’t believe the la-a myth is still going around, I first heard that when pregnant with my daughter she’s a teenager now.

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 19/01/2024 12:20

Kale.

Because we all want to be named after the world's worst vegetable.

vidflex · 19/01/2024 12:20

Oh I forgot we met an adorable little girl called jubilee recently too

sharptoothlemonshark · 19/01/2024 12:20

Gosh, this thread is worrying me, I know so many of these people!

Beau is quite common, Noah is one of the world's most common female names! Serendipity, I know a few... lots of the others mentioned here as unusual, I know.

CharlotteMakepeace · 19/01/2024 12:20

Lucky. A boy.

Unfortunate moniker when things go wrong in life. Imagine the ridicule should they befall a terrible accident.

Devilsmommy · 19/01/2024 12:21

A boy in my child's sports team is called Cato. I actually think it's very cool, but certainly unusual!

Makes me think of Roman empire

ladycardamom · 19/01/2024 12:21

ruralwanderer · 19/01/2024 11:56

Ignatius. Still can't wrap my head around it.

I love Ignatius or Iggy for short! I recently met a child called Sanity.

I can see why some countries have prescribed lists of names, or the names need official approval.

Redskyatwhatever · 19/01/2024 12:21

We have a Chardonnay in our extended family.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 19/01/2024 12:22

Yvonne.

Except the parents thought it was pronounced 'Y - vo - knee'

A name isn’t random just because you haven’t come across them. It’s a bit offensive that names popular in other countries & cultures are considered random!

It’s just a bit of fun. Not a criticism of anyone’s choices or culture. I’m sure Dave is probably a random name somewhere in the world and if so I welcome the comment for a bit of light hearted ness.

Obi. Father is a Star Wars fan.

His sister if a boy was going to be called Elvis but was called Elvi instead.

Lovely family and the names suit the children.

billycat321 · 19/01/2024 12:22

A friend once taught English to Vietnamese refugees in Australia. Three of her students were called Fuk, Tits and Fart. A local radio station did a feature on her and she took great delight in introducing her star pupils live on air!

Usernamen · 19/01/2024 12:23

I’ve mentioned this before but I met a Kurdish couple whose baby girl is called N**ga (pronounced exactly like the racist word).

They had recently emigrated to the UK so couldn’t have known. I haven’t seen them in a while but their daughter is school age now so I do wonder whether they changed her name / gave her a nickname.

Well one of the first replies was a racist trope….

Great report on the difficulties of families trying to put their kids through education in West Africa a few years ago on BBC. Two young men were called Persevere and Scholastic.
