I've got 2 sons with a unique (to this country) name my 3rd has a relatively uncommon name but loads share it. I'm not going to say their names as it's incredibly outing but 1 of them is the only person in the UK with the name (as I googled for statistics years ago - someone could of named their son it as well by now but its still so unique nobody else would ever meet another) the other name is common in the country of origin but it is extremely rare in the UK especially to a 'white British' child.

I actually think Nevaeh is a really beautiful name, I think it’s so hated on mumsnet on account of being ‘chavvy’ rather than the actual sound of the name

How is it actually pronounced? Neeeva? Or Nevay-a?

Depends.

If said by the child its pronounced Nevaya.

If said by the parents it pronounced Nevaya-which-is-actually-Heaven-spelled-backwards.

purpleme12 · 20/01/2024 20:28

@Violahastings I really like Neveah as well.
Don't get what the deal is with it

Cant speak for anyone else but for me, every SINGLE time a parent has told me that they have used that name they need to tell me that it is Heaven spelled backwards.

And not just once but as often as possible they will shoehorn that in there, and I dont know why!

saturny · 20/01/2024 16:12

Could be!

Yes I've seen the Google results. They're frequently discussed, the Dick family.

I can't find her birth record though, not even with Ophelia as a middle name or under a spelling variation. I still need to widen the search, but nothing has come up so far.

I think she married Martin Rars

I'm no saying it's not an urban legend and have never met one but this site says the ONS doesn't list names when only one or two are given the name.

names.darkgreener.com/#la-a

You can check every birth in Scotland from the 1500’s to now on various sites and no record of anyone with that name.

Not sure if there are similar sites for the rest of the uk.

Lancelot Funge.
Dawn Folly.
Pearl Button.

KeeefBurtain · 20/01/2024 23:15

I don’t think people should be taking ‘random’ to mean bad, which quite a few posters are.

I know of a family who have 3 children called Kaiser, Precious-Jade and Rachel. The Rachel is the random to me.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/01/2024 23:19

You cant help thinking that Precious-Jade must envy Rachel! But yes, it is a random choice based on their naming history, Princess Beautiful would fit right in there!

Elspethelf · 21/01/2024 02:26

My first boyfriend as a young teen was a boy named Zeb. I later found out it was short for Zebulon.

PumpkinSly · 21/01/2024 08:21

I know of a Sephora. The child is 7 or 8 now and was named before the Sephora brand came to the UK because the Mother saw the shop when on holiday and liked the way it sounded. I wonder if she regrets it now Sephora is in the UK.

dancinfeet · 21/01/2024 08:57

Cameo (boy), Petal - siblings all had flowery names like Rose and Daisy. Verity and Elodie, normal but fairly unusual names back in the early 2000s.

miniaturepixieonacid · 21/01/2024 09:14

I've taught a Sephora too. She'll be 13 now. I've never heard of a brand called Sephora, I think this girl was called it because of the French and Biblical connections. I think it's beautiful.

I also knew a Zeb short for Zebedee whose sister was Zipporah (the more Biblical form of Sephora). They were known as Zeb and Zip which I adore!

miniaturepixieonacid · 21/01/2024 09:18

On tge other definition of random uptgread where one doesn't fit, Ive known 2 large families where the youngest is just so differently named:

Posy, Obi, Briar, Fleur, Eden ... and George
Atticus, Orlando, Cosmo ... and Luke

TigerRag · 21/01/2024 09:52

There are similar records for the UK. I listed them a few posts back. No record, so far, there of that name either.

Phineyj · 21/01/2024 10:18

Is it possible that people hear the la-a thing and think, oh that's a cool way to spell it? I mean, there's plenty of genuine names with a similar sound.

Nad-a anyone?! (Natasha)

saturny · 21/01/2024 12:01

Possible they might think it's cool.

I'd just be surprised if it got past the registrar, on pronunciation grounds and symbols, on trying to register the birth.

DH had this on our baby name list as a serious first choice.

We have friends in Donegal and there are several Cornelius in the village- all known as Corney.

I had just remembered the same name and was about to add

Goldwork · 19/01/2024 16:19

There was a lawyer at my firm (US branch so I never met her) called Cupcake Brown. That's my favourite name ever I think. Also I think of her when people on the baby name boards say that Missy or Ella-Mae or whoever won't be able to be judges. Cupcake was not a judge but she was a very well paid lawyer at a big firm.

Oh wow I read her book! What an amazing person

Twins3007 · 21/01/2024 17:51

I actually did , they were a large family quite well known in the town I came from , would name it but would be a bit outing

I can assure you I did , they were a large family in the town I was bought up in
thought twice to post this as seen some reactions to other posts but I’m sure if you look it up you will see
bit random but the other kids had all common names for that time

saturny · 21/01/2024 18:53

@Twins3007 scroll back down the thread! Everard has been found (BMD indexes). His middle name is Alphonso apparently.
Haven't managed to find Ophelia (or spelling variants) though, even as a middle name.
