I heard a mum shouting for her toddler son some years ago, he was called Raven. Stopped me in my tracks!

I met a girl called Night and she had a sister Raven.

my kid goes to school with a Neveah

I thought it was a urban myth...

Sadly I've seen that exact spelling before.

All the more tragic when it's supposed to be 'heaven' reversed!

I had a child in one class with a long and beautiful sounding name from a different culture. When I complimented her Mum and asked her what it meant, it turned out to mean "3 days of blood and screaming" and described her labour.....

I know a Bismarck! He was in DS's year at school.

Also a girl called Rizla. Apparently her siblings also had smoking-related names like Virginia and Amber, but that might have been DS pulling my leg. Rizla was real though!

@TidyDancer Beau in itself is French for handsome, so it's very male as it is. The female version would be Belle.

True.

I once had a neighbour called Loveday

It's a derivation of an old English name. Most common in Cornwall now, though I don't know how many there are.

I met a child called La-a. With that spelling. Pronounced Ladasha.

I kid you not - this was in a professional capacity and that was how her name was written on her records.

I still can't quite believe it!

No you didn't. This is a very, very old urban myth.

Heard a guy shouting "Diesel, come here" recently, assuming to see a dog appear. Was quite surprised when I saw a little boy stomping up to the man.

scoopoftheday · 19/01/2024 12:39

Sisters called Silk and Lace (they're lovely girls)

Lifeinlists · 19/01/2024 12:39

A carer in my mum's nursing home was called Happiness. I thought it was rather lovely, especially in what was a difficult time in my (and my mum's) life. She was rather lovely.

Oooooh I remembered a Vietnamese guy named Long. It is very common name and means "dragon" or similar. Ironically, he wasn't tall at all.

Edited

I used to work with a Serbian guy who was actually called Dragon

It’s apparently quite a common Serbian name

I like Ignatius! I wanted Aloysius (and loads of other Irish/Scottish saint names) but DH vetoed them all.

There's an Oban-bleu near us. Oban I quite like, it's the bleu part, I can't read it other than bleurhh.

Ariola

Albion, Toga, Kar'mon and Paddy Elvis

All at my daughter's nursery.

MamTDM · 19/01/2024 12:42

There was a Danny-Boy at my DS's primary school. That was his actual name, not a nickname.

It's not a foolproof search but here are the records from Scotland, Wales and England

Arshit -He was born abroad I think in his own culture it's a nice name - however it does not really translate well into English.

Twins name Flopsy and Mopsy after Peter Rabbit's siblings (I always HOPED these were simply nicknames but I never found out for certain)

MamTDM · 19/01/2024 12:42

I love Paddy Elvis!! It sounds like a character from a kids' book!

Ger1atricMillennial · 19/01/2024 12:42

Came across and adult male called Stryker- lovely guy and rocked the name.

IntriguingFactJumble · 19/01/2024 12:43

A boy called Senna. I guessed they liked the driver but didn't know about the pods.

Hyacinth for a man but that was back a few generations. His descendant had Isidore as a middle name.

ToffeeCrumble · 19/01/2024 12:43

Beau-Loxley. A bit too much like bollocks

TootenCarMoon · 19/01/2024 12:43

On the radio last week, someone had asked the DJ to say hello to her daughters, Tafetta and Foxton.

Was a toddler called Romance at a baby group I used to go to and I’ve met a teenaged girl named Manhattan. Her siblings all had fairly run of the mill names so it seemed more unusual.

greentealeafy · 19/01/2024 12:43

Research was made into birth records when this first started doing the rounds and was proven to be untrue.

Someone is having you on or you are continuing the urban myth.

It's definitely an urban myth! It's been doing the rounds for years. Usually along with Pocahontas McGinty. Also proved to be an urban myth.
